Part 7: The Woman I Was Never Supposed to Meet

Part 7: The Woman I Was Never Supposed to Meet
I stayed frozen after the call ended.
The phone was still pressed against my ear.
The line was dead.
But my father’s last words kept repeating in my head.
Ask the woman you almost married why she was chosen.
Chosen.
That was the word that hurt the most.
Not lied to.
Not betrayed.
Chosen.
Like I was not a person.
Like I was a piece on a board.
I walked back into the apartment.
Slowly.
The wedding suit I was still wearing suddenly felt like a costume.
A costume for a life that never existed.
I looked at the mirror.
A man stood there.
Perfect suit.
Perfect hair.
Perfect plan.
Everything about him looked ready for a wedding.
Except his eyes.
My phone rang again.
This time, Amelia.
I stared at the screen.
Part of me wanted to ignore it.
But another part knew I needed answers.
I answered.
“Daniel.”
Her voice was quiet.
“You talked to him.”
Not a question.
A statement.
“You knew.”
Silence.
“You knew my father was alive.”
“I suspected.”
My jaw tightened.
“Suspected?”
A pause.
“You suspected the man I buried eight years ago was alive?”
She started crying.
“I didn’t know for sure.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I was trying to protect you.”
I laughed.
A cold laugh.
“Everyone says that.”
“Daniel, please listen.”
“No.”
My voice hardened.
“You listen.”
I walked toward the window.
“I spent years grieving him.”
A pause.
“I thought I lost my father.”
Another pause.
“And you were sitting there with information about him.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
She didn’t answer.
And again…
The silence became the answer.
“What did he mean?”
I asked.
“Why was I chosen?”
Her breathing changed.
I heard it.
She knew something.
“Amelia.”
A pause.
“Tell me.”
Finally, she whispered:
“Because of your grandfather.”
I frowned.
“My grandfather?”
“Yes.”
The name felt strange.
My grandfather had been gone for years.
A respected businessman.
A family legend.
A man everyone admired.
“What about him?”
Amelia took a breath.
“Your grandfather didn’t leave behind only money.”
I waited.
“He left behind secrets.”
I almost smiled.
Another secret.
Another hidden thing.
“What kind of secrets?”
“I don’t know everything.”
“Of course you don’t.”
“Daniel.”
Her voice became desperate.
“I’m serious.”
I stopped.
“My father found documents.”
“About my grandfather?”
“Yes.”
“What documents?”
She hesitated.
Then:
“Records.”
“Records of what?”
“People.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
She whispered:
“Your grandfather kept files on everyone.”
The room went silent.
“Everyone?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To control them.”
I felt a chill.
The man everyone praised.
The man whose name was on buildings.
The man who built an empire.
Had another side.
“Who knew about this?”
“My father.”
“And yours?”
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
“So my father disappeared because of those files.”
“I think so.”
A long silence.
Then I asked the question I was afraid to ask.
“And me?”
Amelia didn’t answer.
“Why was I involved?”
Finally:
“Because your grandfather trusted you.”
I laughed.
“Me?”
“You were the only person he didn’t think would use the information.”
My expression changed.
“What information?”
Another silence.
Then Amelia said:
“Daniel…”
Her voice shook.
“Your grandfather left something for you.”
My heart started beating faster.
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
“Where is it?”
She hesitated.
“Lily has it.”
Everything stopped.
“What?”
“She doesn’t know.”
I stood still.
“What are you talking about?”
Amelia whispered:
“When Lily was born, Ethan’s father gave her something.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
I grabbed my keys.
“Daniel, where are you going?”
“To find my daughter.”
A pause.
“She isn’t your daughter.”
The words slipped out.
And the moment they did…
I regretted them.
Silence.
Then Amelia whispered:
“I know.”
The pain in her voice was obvious.
I closed my eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
“I understand.”
But I knew she didn’t.
Not completely.
I arrived at Amelia’s apartment twenty minutes later.
The place was dark.
Quiet.
Too quiet.
I knocked.
No answer.
“Amelia?”
Nothing.
I knocked again.
Harder.
Then I heard it.
A small sound.
A child crying.
My heart dropped.
I opened the door.
“Lily?”
The little girl came running from the hallway.
Her face was wet with tears.
“Daniel!”
I knelt immediately.
“What happened?”
She grabbed my arm.
“Mommy left.”
My stomach tightened.
“Where?”
She pointed toward the table.
A note.
I picked it up.
Only one sentence.
I know who took your father.
My blood turned cold.
Because underneath the sentence was a name.
Not Ethan.
Not my father.
Not Amelia.
May you like
A name I recognized.
My own mother.
