Chapter 3 - The Interrogation of Roland Cole

Port Boston was cold and desolate at eleven o'clock at night. Fog rolled off the dark, churning water, thick as wool, wrapping around stacks of rusted shipping containers like heavy drapes. A single halogen floodlight illuminated Pier 14, where a Liberian-flagged freighter was unloading crates of industrial machinery.
Roland Cole stood near the edge of the dock, wearing a heavy wool trench coat, holding a tablet and checking off manifest numbers as two dockworkers operated a forklift. Roland was fifty-two, an accountant turned logistics chief who had managed Damian’s supply chains for a decade. He was a methodical, quiet man who preferred spreadsheets to street violence.
A soft footstep sounded behind him in the fog. Roland turned, expecting his assistant. Instead, he found Damian Hale standing six feet away, flanked not by his usual security detail, but completely alone, his face cast in deep shadows.
“Damian!” Roland gasped, startled, clutching the tablet to his chest. “What... what are you doing down here? You shouldn't be out in the open like this after Providence.”
“The Providence investigation is finished,” Damian said calmly, stepping forward. His voice was unnaturally quiet—a tone that everyone in the organization knew meant death was nearby.
Roland forced a nervous smile. “Finished? Did Felix confirm the paper trail on your wife?”
Damian pulled the forged handwriting note from his pocket and held it out between his fingers, echoing the exact gesture Isabelle had made four nights ago. “Felix found something interesting, Roland. He found that this note was drawn by a vector plotter. He also found that the offshore bank transfers were authorized from the terminal in your private office at Hale Logistics.”
Roland’s face drained of all color in an instant. He took a hasty step back, his eyes darting toward the two dockworkers near the forklift. “Damian... wait. You don't understand. I was just following orders—I was verifying what was given to me!”
“You lied to me,” Damian said, taking another step forward. His presence seemed to consume the space between them. “I asked you if the financial trail was authentic. You swore on your mother’s grave that it was.”
“Grant brought me the accounts!” Roland stammered, his voice rising in panic as he backed up against the rusted steel side of a shipping container. “Grant said you wanted it cleared! He told me if I didn't set up the secondary transfers under her maiden name, he’d put my son in a box! You know what Grant is like when he wants something!”
Damian stopped. The truth, stripped of all corporate jargon and false loyalty, was out in the open air. “Grant planned the Providence ambush.”
Roland was shaking uncontrollably now, his hands trembling so hard he dropped the tablet onto the wet concrete. “Yes! He’s been cutting deals with the Calloway family for six months! They offered him fifty percent of the dock routes if he eliminated you and brought the captains into line. He needed Isabelle out of the picture because she noticed discrepancies in the quarterly logistics audits two months ago!”
Damian felt a cold fire ignite behind his ribs. Everything was turning inside out. Isabelle hadn't been betraying him; she had been trying to protect his empire from the very men who had fed him her forged guilt. She had seen the financial irregularities, and when she tried to investigate, Grant had manufactured her treason to silence her before she could bring the truth to Damian.
“She tried to tell me,” Damian whispered, the horror of his own stupidity settling into his bones. “She looked at me and told me someone was framing her, and I chose your spreadsheets over her word.”
“Damian, please,” Roland begged, sinking to his knees on the cold, wet concrete, tears streaming down his face. “I have a family! Grant threatened to destroy everything I built! I’ll testify against him! I’ll give you the master ledgers! I’ll give you the encryption keys!”
Damian drew his pistol, the motion fluid and devoid of hesitation. He did not raise his voice. He did not scream. “Where is the vector plotter you used to forge her writing?”
“In... in my office safe,” Roland sobbed. “Combination is 14-88-22. Everything is in there. The original scans of her prenuptial agreement, the communication logs with Grant, the offshore routing slips.”
Damian looked down at the man who had helped ruin his life for a promotion and a threat. “You let me throw my pregnant wife into a storm, Roland.”
Roland’s eyes widened in sheer terror. “Pregnant? Damian, I... I didn't know—!”
May you like
A single suppressed shot echoed softly against the fog-drenched shipping containers. Roland Cole collapsed onto the concrete, silent. Damian turned without looking back, stepping past the frozen dockworkers who pretended to see nothing, and dialed Felix on his secure line.
“I have the safe combination,” Damian said into the phone, his voice like grinding stones. “Clean out Roland’s office. Lock down Grant’s accounts. And tell me you found Isabelle.”
