Chapter 8 - The Captains' Council

By 4:00 AM, the Hale estate was surrounded by dark vehicles and armed men holding assault rifles. Floodlights illuminated the stone driveway, casting long, menacing shadows across the grand estate walls. Inside the formal grand dining room—a room adorned with oil paintings of former syndicate bosses—six men sat around a massive oak table.
Grant Doyle stood at the head of the table, wearing a dark suit, his face a picture of grim, righteous indignation. On the table before the captains lay a carefully curated pile of documents—more forged papers detailing Damian’s alleged offshore accounts with the Calloway family.
“Damian has lost his mind,” Grant proclaimed smoothly to the assembled captains. “The pressure of the Providence attack broke him. He murdered Roland Cole on the docks tonight in cold blood because Roland discovered Damian was selling our shipping routes to the Italians. He drove his own wife away to make it look like she was the scapegoat!”
Old Man Vane, the senior captain from South Boston who had served alongside Damian’s father, chewed on a cigar and frowned heavily at the papers. “Damian Hale has been the head of this family for twelve years, Grant. He built our revenue three times over. I find it hard to believe he’d burn his own house down for Italian money.”
“Look at the bank routing slips, Vane!” Grant yelled, slamming his hand onto the table. “The money left our logistics accounts and went straight into Damian’s private trusts in Zurich! I have the digital signatures right here!”
Outside the estate, heavy automatic gunfire suddenly erupted at the main gates. Alarm sirens began to wail across the grounds, their high-pitched screams piercing the dark night.
The dining room doors swung open violently. A junior soldier burst into the room, blood streaming down his arm. “Grant! It’s Damian! He’s breached the north perimeter with Lucas Ford and a dozen men!”
Grant drew his nickel-plated revolver, his face twisting into a malicious sneer. “He’s come to finish the job! Captains, draw your weapons! We execute the traitor right here, right now!”
Before the captains could move, the heavy oak double doors of the dining room were blown inward by a breach charge. Wood splinters and thick white smoke filled the air.
Damian Hale stepped through the smoke, dressed in a black tactical coat, holding a heavy shotgun in his hands. Beside him stood Isabelle, her face calm and unyielding, carrying a glowing tablet connected to Felix’s master server. Behind them stood Lucas Ford, his shoulder bandaged, flanked by eight hardened veterans of the Hale family, their rifles trained directly on Grant Doyle’s men.
“Hold your fire!” Old Man Vane bellowed, standing up and holding his hands out as the captains drew their guns. “Nobody shoots until I hear what’s happening!”

“There’s nothing to hear!” Grant screamed, raising his gun toward Damian. “Kill him!”
“Touch that trigger, Grant,” Damian said, his voice ringing through the massive room like a death sentence, “and you won't live to hear the verdict.”
