Chapter 5 - The Fortress on the Lake

The black armored SUV cut through the blinding Chicago snowstorm like a silent ghost, its heavy tires gripping the icy pavement.

Elena sat in the deep leather rear seat, wrapped in a thick cashmere blanket that Adrian had pulled from the vehicle’s private bar.

Adrian sat directly beside her. He had not spoken a single word since they left the restaurant, but his hand was firmly wrapped around hers, his fingers interwoven with hers, refusing to let go for even a second.

Elena stared out the tinted window at the passing streetlights, her mind slowly recovering from the sheer shock of the attack.

“How did you know?” she asked quietly, her voice raspy.

Adrian turned his head, his dark eyes glowing in the dim ambient light of the dashboard.

“I told you,” Adrian said softly. “I notice everything about you.”

“Adrian—”

“The moment Daniel Reed’s background check showed a three-month gap in his employment history in Detroit two years ago, I had Theo put a satellite tracker on his vehicle,” Adrian explained calmly. “When you walked out of the hotel tonight, I had two cars following his sedan. When his men moved into the alley behind the restaurant, Mason alerted me.”

Elena looked down at their joined hands, feeling a strange, overwhelming mix of intense gratitude and deep, burning anger.

“You let me walk into a trap?” she asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous whisper.

“I gave you the choice to walk away,” Adrian corrected gently, his thumb softly stroking the back of her hand. “I warned you at the hotel table. I told you to check his credentials. I hoped you would see through him yourself.”

“And if I hadn't gone to the restroom? If they had taken me through the front door?”

“I would have burnt that restaurant to the ground before they let you step foot in a car,” Adrian said without a single second of hesitation, his tone so flat and absolute that Elena knew it was undeniable truth.

Elena pulled her breath in slowly, feeling a warm, heavy shudder run through her body.

The SUV turned off the main highway, passing through a massive, heavy iron security gate that opened automatically into a private, winding driveway lined with tall, snow-covered pine trees.

The Vale estate sat on a lonely, dramatic cliff overlooking the freezing black waters of Lake Michigan.

It was a magnificent stone mansion built in the 1920s—a fortress of high walls, reinforced glass, advanced security systems, and private guards who patrolled the grounds around the clock.

The SUV pulled up beneath the grand stone porte-cochère.

The driver opened the rear door, holding a large umbrella over the entrance.

Adrian stepped out first, then reached back inside, offering his hand to Elena.

She took it, stepping out onto the heated stone pavement.

They walked through the grand carved oak doors into the warm, soaring foyer of the mansion. The air inside smelled of old mahogany, fresh pine needles, beeswax candles, and rich leather.

A roaring fire was already burning brightly in the massive stone fireplace of the grand hall.

“Go upstairs and take a warm shower,” Adrian told her gently, taking her heavy coat from her shoulders. “I’ve had Maria put fresh clothes for you in the master guest suite.”

Elena looked into his eyes. “Where are you going?”

“I have to deal with Marcus Vance,” Adrian replied smoothly. “And I need to ensure Daniel Reed never steps foot in this city again.”

Elena grabbed his forearm, her fingers sinking into the sleeve of his shirt.

“Adrian,” she whispered, her dark eyes locking onto his. “No killing. Please.”

Adrian looked down at her small hand resting on his arm, his expression unreadable for a long moment.

“He tried to take you from me, Elena,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a dark, rough murmur.

“I know what he tried to do,” she said fiercely. “And he will spend the rest of his life in a federal prison for industrial espionage and kidnapping if you give the wiretap evidence to Prosecutor Miller. Don't add a murder charge to your hands because of him. He isn't worth it.”

Adrian stared into her eyes, searching her face, feeling the sheer, unshakeable strength of her spirit.

May you like

Slowly, after ten agonizing seconds of silence, the terrifying tension in his broad shoulders softened slightly.

“For you,” Adrian whispered, reaching up to gently brush a strand of dark hair away from her face. “Only for you.”
