Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Truth

An hour later, Elena stepped out of the master guest bathroom, wrapped in a soft, oversized cream cashmere sweater and comfortable trousers that smelled faintly of lavender and clean wool.

Her long dark hair was damp, hanging loosely over her shoulders.

She walked down the carpeted grand staircase toward the quiet main level of the mansion.

The house was peaceful and still, save for the crackling sound of the firewood burning in the main study.

She pushed open the heavy mahogany doors of Adrian’s private library.

The massive room was lined with thousands of rare, leather-bound books, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the dark lake, and a large mahogany desk where Adrian sat alone in the dim firelight.

He had changed into a simple black henley shirt and dark trousers. He was holding a crystal glass of amber scotch, staring out at the white snow blowing across the black water outside.

He turned his head as she stepped into the room.

“You should be resting,” Adrian said softly, his voice echoing in the quiet space.

“I couldn't sleep,” Elena replied, walking across the thick Persian rug toward his desk.

She stood across from him, looking at his handsome, shadowed face.

“Did you hand him over to Prosecutor Miller?” she asked gently.

“Mason dropped Daniel Reed and his tactical driver at the front steps of the Federal Building thirty minutes ago,” Adrian said, taking a small sip of his drink. “Along with a flash drive containing every encrypted communication between Reed and Marcus Vance over the last six months. They will both be serving twenty-year federal sentences by spring.”

Elena let out a long, quiet breath, feeling a massive weight finally lift from her chest.

“Thank you, Adrian,” she murmured.

Adrian set his glass down on the desk with a quiet thud. He stood up slowly, walking around the large mahogany desk until he was standing directly in front of her.

The firelight danced across the strong planes of his jaw, casting deep shadows in his dark eyes.

“You told me tonight at the hotel that you were tired,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a low, intimate murmur that vibrated straight through her heart.

Elena felt her pulse accelerate. “I was.”

“You said you were tired of waiting for something that was never going to happen.”

“Adrian—”

“Look at me, Elena,” he commanded softly.

She lifted her face, her dark eyes meeting his without a single shred of defense left between them.

“Four years ago,” Adrian whispered, stepping half an inch closer, “a quiet, brilliant twenty-four-year-old translator walked into my office. She looked Serbian warlords in the eye without blinking. She translated death threats with the voice of an angel. And she refused to let me intimidate her for a single second.”

He reached out, his long, warm fingers gently cradling her jawline, his thumb softly tracing her lower lip.

“I knew the moment you sat at my table that you were dangerous to me,” Adrian confessed softly, his voice raspy with emotion he had hidden for four long years. “Not because you had a gun, but because you were the only thing in this world that could make me weak.”

Elena’s breath caught sharply in her throat.

“I spent four years keeping my distance,” Adrian continued, his eyes burning into hers. “I told myself I was protecting you from my world. I told myself that letting you near me would put a target on your back. I watched you sit at the end of my table every night, smelling like rain and fresh paper, and I forced myself to pretend I didn't want to burn the world down just to keep you safe.”

Tears welled up in Elena’s eyes, making the soft firelight blur around them.

“And tonight,” Adrian murmured, his face inching closer to hers, “when you looked at me and said 'Not after tonight'... I thought my heart was going to stop.”

“Then why did you push me away?” Elena whispered, her voice trembling.

“Because I’m a foolish man who thought he could control everything,” Adrian rasped. “Until I saw another man put his hands on you tonight. And I realized that living without you isn't protection, Elena. It’s just death.”

Elena didn't wait for him to say another word.

She reached up, her hands sliding into his dark, soft hair, and pulled his face down to hers.
