Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of the North Wing

The Croft estate sat high above Harrow Falls on a dark, tree-lined ridge, isolated from the rest of the city by acres of ancient pine forest and high stone walls.
Sadie woke up to the smell of ozone and fresh linen.
She blinked open her eyes, finding herself lying in a massive, four-poster bed made of dark mahogany. Sunlight streamed through tall arched windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Her chest was bound in tight, professional surgical dressing, and a clear IV line ran into the back of her left hand, dripping painkillers into her system at a steady, soothing rate.
She tried to sit up, but a low groan escaped her lips as her abdominal muscles pulled against her fractured ribs.
"Don't strain yourself," a quiet voice said from the shadows near the window.
Julian sat in a high-backed velvet armchair, a glass of dark amber liquid resting on the side table beside him. He had removed his suit jacket, rolling his crisp white sleeves up to his forearms, revealing thick, dark tattoos that snaked around his wrists—symbols of an older, far more dangerous line of work than modern corporate management.
"Where... where am I?" Sadie asked, her voice dry and hoarse.
"My home. The North Wing," Julian said, standing up and walking over to the side of the bed. He reached out, filling a glass with fresh water from a crystal carafe, and handed it to her gently. "Dr. Vance wrapped your ribs. Two cracked, one hairline fracture. You'll need four weeks of rest."
Sadie drank the water greedily, her mind racing. "The dog... Barnaby... is he...?"
"He's alive," Julian said softly. A faint, real smile touched his lips for the briefest moment. "The vet team worked on him through the night. Severe dehydration, advanced age, and a minor infection, but his heart is strong. He's sleeping in the room downstairs on a heated bed. He refuses to eat unless one of my guards feeds him out of an apron."
Sadie let out a long breath she didn't realize she was holding, leaning her head back against the soft pillows. "Thank god."
Julian leaned against the bedpost, studying her face with an intensity that made her skin prickle. "You don't know who I am, do you, Sadie?"
Sadie looked down at the silk sheets. "I know your name. Everyone at The Harrington knew your name. You're the man who owns the docks, the real estate, and half the city council."
"I am also the man whose enemies tried to break his family three years ago," Julian said quietly. "Barnaby wasn't just a pet. He was trained by my father to guard our inner sanctum. When my father died, Barnaby went missing during a raid orchestrated by people who wanted to take control of our shipping routes. I spent six months searching every yard, every kennel, every black-market breeder in three states."
He leaned closer, his gray eyes locking onto hers with an overwhelming weight.
"Yesterday, he dragged himself five miles through a thunderstorm, past four checkpoints, straight to the one building in Harrow Falls where he knew someone would have the heart to lift him."
"He didn't know me," Sadie whispered. "He was just suffering."
"He knew you," Julian corrected. "Animals know who possesses a soul, Sadie. And so do I."
The thick oak doors of the bedroom suddenly creaked open.
Matteo stepped into the room, his expression dark and tense. He held an encrypted tablet in his hand. "Sir. We have a situation at the lower gate."
Julian didn't look back. "What is it?"
"It's Arthur Vane," Matteo said, his voice clipped. "Celeste's father. He brought six armed men with him. He's demanding to see you. He says you've destroyed his family's credit rating, breached a binding alliance contract, and kidnapped a waitress from his associate's establishment."
Sadie’s heart spiked. She reached out instinctively, her hand catching the edge of Julian’s sleeve. "Mr. Croft... I don't want to cause any more trouble. I can leave. I can go back to my apartment—"
Julian placed his hand over hers, his fingers warm and firm, instantly stilling her panic.
"You're not going anywhere, Sadie," Julian said softly. Then, he turned his head toward Matteo, his expression instantly dropping into a terrifying mask of absolute authority.
"Tell Arthur Vane that he has five minutes to clear his men off my driveway," Julian ordered. "If he is still standing at my gate after that, I won't just ruin his credit. I will buy his shipping company by noon, liquidate its assets by three, and have him arrested for treason by dinner."

Matteo nodded once. "Understood, sir."
Julian turned back to Sadie, his tone shifting back to gentle warmth as if he hadn't just ordered the destruction of a powerful dynasty. "Rest now, Sadie. No one enters this room unless I allow them to."
