Chapter 4 - The Tides of War

For three days, the Croft estate became a fortress at war with the rest of the city's corrupt elite.

News of the incident at The Harrington had exploded across Harrow Falls like a wildfire. The sight of Julian Croft carrying a battered waitress out of a high-society engagement dinner had completely shattered the delicate political balance of the region. The Vane family, realizing their imminent ruin, attempted to mobilize their allies in the police department and city council to force an investigation into Julian’s business practices.

Inside the North Wing, however, the atmosphere was profoundly quiet.

Sadie’s recovery progressed quickly under the care of Julian’s personal medical staff. By the fourth morning, she was able to walk without support, her ribs held tight by medical wraps. Her first stop every morning was the sunlit conservatory on the ground floor, where Barnaby lay resting on a massive velvet cushion.

The giant mastiff would lift his head the moment her footsteps sounded on the marble floor, his tail giving heavy, deliberate thumps against the ground until she sat beside him, resting her hand on his dark head.

"He looks better today," a voice said behind her.

Sadie turned to see Julian standing in the doorway, wearing a dark wool coat. He looked exhausted, the shadows beneath his gray eyes darker than usual, but his posture remained rigid and imposing.

"He ate a full bowl of broth this morning," Sadie said, smiling faintly as she scratched Barnaby behind his ears. "He's getting his strength back."

Julian walked into the conservatory, sitting on the low stone wall across from her. "The Vane family isn't giving up quietly," he said flatly. "Arthur Vane has spent the last forty-eight hours trying to organize a coalition among the council members to seize my northern dockyards."

Sadie looked down at her hands, her smile fading. "This is all because of me. If I had just taken him out the back door... if I hadn't brought him into the dining room—"

"Sadie," Julian interrupted, his voice firm. "Look at me."

She raised her eyes to meet his.

"Celeste Vane was a political arrangement," Julian said coldly. "A cold, calculated contract designed to maintain peace between two powerful families. She showed me who she was the second she put her boot into your chest. She saved me from making the greatest mistake of my life."

He stood up, walking over to stand directly in front of her.

"I don't keep people around me because they have money or titles," Julian said, his gray eyes burning with intensity. "I keep people around me who have honor. You showed more strength, courage, and mercy in thirty seconds on that floor than the entire high society of Harrow Falls has shown in thirty years."

Before Sadie could answer, the conservatory doors burst open.

Matteo rushed in, his face pale, his drawn hand resting on the grip of his sidearm. "Sir! The perimeter sensors at the east gate were cut. We have three vehicles coming up the private drive—they aren't slowing down."

Julian didn't flinch. He reached into his coat, drawing a sleek, silver sidearm, his eyes turning to ice in an instant.

"Matteo, get Sadie and Barnaby into the safe room behind the study," Julian commanded.

"No," Sadie said, standing up despite the sharp pain in her side. She stepped in front of Barnaby, shielding the old dog with her body just as she had done three nights ago. "I'm not hiding."

Julian looked at her, a strange, dark flash of pride igniting in his gray eyes. "Stay behind me then," he ordered.

The heavy glass doors of the conservatory shattered as a black SUV rammed straight through the garden terrace, coming to a screeching halt in the center of the courtyard. Four armed men in tactical gear poured out, led by Arthur Vane himself, his face red with unbridled rage, a heavy pistol held shaking in his hand.

"Croft!" Arthur screamed, his voice echoed off the high glass walls. "You destroyed my daughter! You ruined my legacy for a piece of street trash!"

Julian stepped out onto the shattered terrace, holding his pistol at his side, his face completely devoid of fear.

"You brought six men onto my property, Arthur," Julian said softly. "You know how this ends."

"It ends with you dead, and your estate divided among the council!" Arthur roared, raising his weapon.

Before Arthur could pull the trigger, a loud, deafening roar shook the entire conservatory.

Barnaby, despite his age, despite his cracked ribs and failing body, charged past Sadie like a battering ram, his massive jaws bared, his eyes burning with ancient fury. He slammed his hundred and fifty pounds straight into Arthur Vane’s chest, throwing the man backward onto the broken glass floor before he could fire a single shot.

At the exact same instant, the surrounding tree line erupted.

Twenty of Julian’s elite security forces stepped out from the shadows of the pine forest, their heavy rifles aimed directly at the remaining mercenaries. The four men dropped their weapons instantly, raising their hands into the air without firing a single round.

Julian stepped over the fallen weapons, standing over Arthur Vane, who lay groaning on the floor under the heavy weight of Barnaby’s paws resting on his chest.

"You forgot one thing, Arthur," Julian said, looking down at the defeated man with absolute coldness. "This house doesn't belong to the city council. It belongs to me."
