Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Queen

Three months later.
The front page of the New York Times Metro section featured a glowing, full-page feature story with the headline: FROM SURVIVOR TO SAVIOR: HOW NURSE EVELYN RHODES EXPOSED MEDICAL FRAUD AND REVOLUTIONIZED CLINICAL ETHICS IN NEW YORK.
The article detailed Evelyn’s triumphant return to the medical community as the newly appointed Director of Clinical Compliance and Emergency Response at a major new state-of-the-art trauma center funded entirely through anonymous philanthropic grants managed by the Moretti Foundation.
It was a crisp Sunday morning in late autumn.
The sun was shining brightly over the rolling green lawns of the Westchester estate.
On the private stone balcony overlooking the eastern rose gardens, Evelyn stood wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, holding a steaming mug of black coffee.
Footsteps echoed softly behind her on the stone tiles.
Adrien stepped out onto the balcony, wearing a relaxed black knit sweater and dark trousers. He walked up behind her, wrapping his strong, broad arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest and resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder.
“You’re reading the paper again,” Adrien murmured into her hair, his deep baritone rich with affection.
“I’m just making sure it’s not a dream,” Evelyn whispered, leaning back into his embrace, closing her eyes as she felt the steady, powerful beat of his heart against her spine. “Six months ago, I was scrubbing tomato sauce off a silver tray while rich men treated me like trash. Now... I have my license back, my own trauma center, and the most dangerous man in New York wrapped around my little finger.”
Adrien chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that vibrated through them both. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box.
He flipped the lid open with his thumb.
Inside sat a breathtaking, multi-carat cushion-cut pink diamond ring, surrounded by a delicate halo of platinum diamonds—a ring as bold, rare, and magnificent as the woman wearing it.
Evelyn gasped softly, turning around in his arms to stare down at the jewelry.
Adrien looked into her deep brown eyes, his own gaze burning with absolute, unconditional love and reverence.
“I didn't bring you into my world to be a nurse, Evelyn,” Adrien said softly, his voice steady and absolute. “I brought you here because the moment you looked down at my sister on that marble floor with fire in your eyes, I knew my cold, dark empire had finally found its true sovereign.”
Evelyn looked up at the mafia king—the man who burned down corrupt hospitals, terrified corrupt politicians, and loved her with an intensity that could move mountains.
She slipped her arms around his neck, pulling him down to her lips.
“Ask me right, Mr. Moretti,” Evelyn whispered against his mouth with a playful, triumphant smile.
Adrien smiled, his dark eyes sparkling with victory.

“Evelyn Rhodes... will you rule by my side forever?”
“Yes,” Evelyn whispered, sealing their bond with a deep, passionate kiss as the golden autumn sun rose high over their unbroken horizon.
