The breakfast broadcast of WNBC News on Wednesday morning was interrupted by an emergency investigative report that rocked the New York political landscape to its absolute foundations.
In a luxury penthouse apartment on Park Avenue, Senator Thomas Vance sat at his mahogany dining table, sipping black coffee while reading the New York Times, feeling invincible as his gubernatorial campaign numbers continued to climb.
Then his phone rang. It was his campaign manager, screaming hysterically.
“Senator! Turn on Channel Four! Right now!”
Thomas frowned, reaching for the remote and clicking the television on.
The screen flashed with a breaking news banner: EXPOSED: THE COVER-UP AT MANHATTAN GENERAL.
The anchor’s voice was crisp and clinical.
“Documents leaked anonymously to investigative journalists early this morning reveal a massive, coordinated conspiracy involving Senator Thomas Vance and Dr. Harrison Vance, Chief of Surgery at St. Jude’s Medical Center. Four years ago, internal hospital records prove that medical files were systematically altered to conceal a fatal overdose involving the Senator’s late son, while retaliatory disciplinary actions were unjustly taken against whistleblower nurse Evelyn Rhodes...”
The television screen cut to a crystal-clear digital copy of Evelyn’s original whistleblower report—complete with the hospital board’s signatures, the falsified toxicology logs, and the exact audio recordings of the disciplinary hearing where board members explicitly discussed destroying Evelyn’s career to protect the Senator’s political career.
Senator Thomas Vance dropped his coffee mug. It shattered against the hardwood floor, spilling dark brown liquid across his expensive Italian shoes.
At that exact moment, the heavy oak front door of his penthouse apartment splintered inward with a deafening crash as federal marshals and New York City police detectives swarmed into the foyer with search warrants and arrest papers.
