Chapter 3 - The Declaration in Gold and Blood

The grand ballroom of the Moretti estate was lit by three massive crystal chandeliers that cast a warm, flickering glow over five hundred elite members of the Chicago underworld.
Over twenty capos sat along the long oak tables, whispering nervously among themselves. In the raised gallery, Lorenzo’s high-society relatives—including his cousin Mario and Mario’s pretentious fiancée, Isabella—sat sipping vintage champagne, looking thoroughly disgusted by the sudden emergency summons.
"This is ridiculous," Isabella hissed, adjusting her designer diamond choker. "Dragging us down here in the middle of a blizzard because some low-level security breach happened in the servant quarters?"
"Quiet, Isabella," Mario muttered, eyeing the armed tactical guards standing at every exit. "Lorenzo doesn't call a full council unless someone is about to die."
The heavy double doors at the front of the ballroom were thrown open.
Lorenzo Moretti walked into the room.
He had removed his blood-stained overcoat, wearing a custom double-breasted charcoal suit that highlighted his towering, powerful frame. But it was not his presence alone that caused five hundred mobsters to instantly fall dead silent.
At his side, her hand held firmly in his large palm, walked Lydia Coppola.
She was still wearing her grey maid’s uniform, her sleeve torn, her skin pale, and her arm loosely bandaged with white gauze. But Lorenzo did not walk three paces ahead of her as a Don usually walked before a domestic worker. He walked beside her, his shoulder brushed against hers, his obsidian eyes scanning the room like a hawk protecting its nest.
The capos exchanged confused, incredulous glances.
"Who is that?" Underboss Vinnie whispered to his lieutenant. "Is that the new girl from the laundry?"
Isabella let out a sharp, mocking laugh from the gallery balcony. "Is he serious? He brought a fat little laundry maid to a council meeting?"
Lorenzo stopped at the head of the long oak table. He did not sit. He placed both palms flat on the wood, his eyes locking onto Mario and Isabella in the gallery.
"Ten minutes ago," Lorenzo’s voice echoed through the high-ceilinged room, deep, smooth, and laced with absolute authority, "a hit squad financed by a traitor inside this very city breached the east wing. Their target was my brother, Mateo."
A collective gasp rippled through the hall. Capos stood up, cursing and slamming their fists against the tables.
"Who did it, Don Lorenzo?!" Capo Santino shouted. "Give us a name! We'll burn their territory to the ground!"
"The strike team was sophisticated," Lorenzo continued, ignoring the outburst. "They bypassed our perimeter security, disabled our central cameras, and murdered Frank at his post. Mateo was ninety seconds away from a bullet to the brain."
Lorenzo turned his head, looking down at Lydia, who stood beside him, her chin held high despite the intense weight of five hundred stares.
"My guards failed," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. "My lieutenants failed. My security systems failed. But this woman did not."
He reached out, taking Lydia’s hand and lifting it high for the entire council to see.
"Lydia Coppola stood alone against an armed assassin," Lorenzo announced. "She shielded my brother with her own body. She used her training, her courage, and her strength to crush the attacker and keep Mateo breathing until I arrived."
Isabella sneered from the balcony, leaning over the brass railing. "Lorenzo, she's a servant! Give her a cash bonus and send her back to her tenement house! Why are we listening to this?"
Lorenzo slowly raised his eyes to the balcony. The temperature in the room seemed to plunge twenty degrees in an instant.
"Mario," Lorenzo said softly.
Mario went pale. "Y-yes, Cousin?"
"Tell your fiancée that if she opens her mouth again in the presence of my household," Lorenzo said, his voice smooth as glass and sharp as a razor, "I will have her tongue removed and mailed to her father in Naples."
Isabella gasped, slapping her hand over her mouth, backing away into her chair in absolute terror.
Lorenzo looked back out over the sea of silent, terrified mobsters.
"A woman who risks her life for the blood of this house is not a servant," Lorenzo declared, his voice thundering through the ballroom. "She is royalty."
He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy velvet box. He opened it, revealing a breathtaking ten-carat cushion-cut blue diamond ring—the Moretti Solitaire, an heirloom worn only by the reigning matriarch of the family for four generations.
Lydia’s dark eyes widened in shock. "Lorenzo... no, what are you doing?" she whispered hastily.
Lorenzo didn't answer her with words. He took her soft, trembling left hand, slipped the massive blue diamond onto her ring finger, and brought her knuckles to his lips, pressing a slow, lingering kiss against her skin.
He turned back to the stunned council.
"Effective immediately," Lorenzo announced, his voice ringing through every corner of the estate, "Lydia Coppola is my betrothed. She is the future mistress of the Moretti Syndicate. Anyone who fails to show her the respect due to a queen will answer directly to my blade."
The capos sat frozen for a fraction of a second. Then, led by Underboss Vinnie, every single man in the room stood up, bowed their heads, and raised their glasses.

"ALL HAIL THE MISTRESS!" five hundred voices roared in unison.
Lydia stood beside Lorenzo, her hand warm inside his iron grip, looking out over the sea of powerful men bowing before her. She looked up at Lorenzo’s sharp profile, finding no fear in her heart—only the sudden, overwhelming realization that her life would never be small again.
