Chapter 5 - The Queen's Retribution

At 4:00 AM, the estate’s private wine cellar beneath the east wing was freezing cold.

Mario Moretti was tied securely to a heavy oak chair in the center of the damp stone room, his shirt torn, his nose bleeding profusely. His fiancée, Isabella, sat sobbing on a nearby wooden crate, her wrists bound with heavy plastic zip-ties.

Lorenzo stood five feet away, slowly sharpening a silver tactical knife against a leather strap.

Beside him stood Lydia, now dressed in a sleek, dark green velvet dress that hugged her broad curves, a dark wool cloak draped over her shoulders. She held her head high, her eyes cold and unwavering as she looked down at the man who had ordered Mateo’s death.

"Lorenzo! Please! I swear on our grandfather's grave!" Mario wept, his body shaking uncontrollably. "It wasn't me! The Vanzini family threatened my children! They forced me to give them the security codes!"

"You sold your cousin for forty percent of the harbor shipping routes, Mario," Lorenzo said softly, testing the razor edge of his blade against his thumb. "You knew Mateo couldn't defend himself. You knew he was helpless."

"Lorenzo, please!" Isabella shrieked from the corner. "Look at that woman standing beside you! She's a nobody! She's a common peasant! You're going to destroy your own bloodline for a laundry maid?!"

Lydia didn't wait for Lorenzo to react.

She stepped forward, her dark green dress sweeping across the damp stone floor. She stopped directly in front of Isabella, looking down at the crying, arrogant woman with absolute, icy disdain.

SLAP.

The sound of Lydia’s open hand striking Isabella’s cheek echoed like a gunshot through the stone cellar.

Isabella’s head snapped to the side, her weeping cutting off in a sharp, stunned gasp.

"I am not a laundry maid," Lydia said, her voice dropping into a powerful, quiet command that commanded the entire room. "I am the woman who saved the life of the man you tried to murder. And as long as I breathe in this house, you will address me as Ma'am."

Lorenzo stopped sharpening his knife. A look of fierce, intoxicating pride flared deep within his dark eyes as he watched his bride take control of the room.

Mario looked up at Lydia, his eyes wide with wild, desperate terror. "Lydia... please! Talk to him! You're a nurse! You took an oath to save lives! Tell him not to kill me!"

Lydia turned her dark eyes to Mario. She looked at his trembling frame, then remembered Mateo lying helpless in his bed, listening to the footsteps of an assassin coming to end his life.

"I took an oath to protect my patients, Mario," Lydia said softly, stepping back to stand beside Lorenzo, her hand slipping naturally into his large, warm palm. "And my family."

Lorenzo looked down at her, his fingers tightening around hers with absolute devotion.

"Marco," Lorenzo ordered flatly without looking back at his cousin. "Take Mario and Isabella to the docks. Ensure the Vanzini family understands that the Moretti Syndicate has a new mistress... and our mercy has officially run out."

"Yes, Don Lorenzo," Marco replied, stepping forward with four armed guards to haul the screaming traitors away into the dark.

Ten minutes later, Lorenzo and Lydia walked out onto the high stone terrace overlooking the snow-covered estate grounds.

The storm had completely cleared, leaving a crisp, starry night sky stretching across the wide horizon over Lake Michigan. The first pale pink light of dawn was beginning to break over the water.

Lorenzo wrapped his heavy wool coat around Lydia’s shoulders, pulling her back against his chest as they stood at the stone railing.

"Are you afraid of the life you just chose, Lydia?" Lorenzo asked softly, his lips resting against her hair.

Lydia leaned back into his warm, powerful frame, looking down at the blue diamond glowing softly on her hand in the early morning light.

She thought of Mateo sleeping peacefully upstairs. She thought of the man holding her right now—a man who would burn the world to keep her safe.

"I used to be afraid of the dark, Lorenzo," Lydia murmured, turning in his arms to look up into his obsidian eyes, her hands resting flat against his lapels. "But now... I realize the dark is where we belong."

Lorenzo smiled—a warm, breathtaking expression that wiped away every trace of the monster the world believed him to be. He leaned down, his lips closing over hers in a slow, deep, possessive kiss that sealed their fate beneath the breaking dawn.
