Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By 8:00 PM that evening, the Moretti estate had transformed into an armed fortress.
Black SUVs were lined up three-deep along the sweeping circular driveway. Armed men in dark suits walked the perimeter of the gardens with Belgian Malinois patrol dogs, while encrypted radio chatter echoed faintly through the manicured hedges.
Inside the private medical wing on the second floor, Naomi finished adjusting Isabella’s ice pack, setting a cup of warm chamomile tea on the nightstand.
Isabella lay comfortably against silk pillows, her breathing soft and regular. The bruise on her cheek had been treated with an soothing ointment, and her hand rested peacefully over Naomi’s.
The heavy door to the bedroom clicked open.
Luca walked in. He had changed into a sharp black suit with an open-collared white shirt, his coat unbuttoned, revealing the leather holster snugged under his arm.
"She’s sleeping," Naomi whispered, standing up to give him space.
Luca stepped over to the bed, looking down at his mother for a long moment before nodding approvingly. He turned to Naomi. "Come with me. We need to talk."
Naomi hesitated, then followed him out into the quiet, dimly lit corridor.
Instead of leading her back down to the main hall, Luca walked her toward his private study at the end of the east wing—a room no servant had ever been permitted to enter.
The study was lined floor-to-ceiling with ancient leather-bound books, dark walnut paneling, and massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows that offered a panoramic view of the glowing city skyline five miles below.
Luca walked behind his heavy oak desk, poured two fingers of amber bourbon into a crystal glass, and gestured toward the leather armchair across from him.
"Sit," he said.
Naomi remained standing near the doorway. "I prefer to stand, Mr. Moretti. If you're going to give me my severance package or assign a new security protocol for your mother, I can take notes."
Luca set his glass down on the desk with a heavy THUD. He slowly walked around the desk until he was standing just two feet away from her, his towering height casting a long shadow over her frame.
"Severance package?" Luca echoed, his voice laced with dark amusement. "You think I’m letting you leave this house, Naomi?"
Naomi’s brows pulled together in concern. "Mr. Moretti, I am an employee of an agency. Given the events of today—the criminal charges against Miss Vance, the involvement of Judge Vance—it would be safer for your family if I returned to my normal duties."
"Safer?" Luca let out a low, cold laugh that lacked any real humor. "Judge Vance has already mobilized three district precinct captains. The Vance family controls forty percent of the city's legal structure. They know you were the sole witness who broke their conspiracy. By tomorrow morning, every crooked cop and hired gun on their payroll will be looking for Naomi Carter."
Naomi felt a sudden chill run through her chest. "I have nothing to hide. I’ll testify in court."
"You won't make it to the courtroom door, Naomi," Luca said, taking another step closer, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute intensity. "In this city, witnesses who cross the syndicate families disappear before the preliminary hearing. If you step outside my gates without my protection, you'll be dead within forty-eight hours."
Naomi straightened her back, refusing to let him see the fear spiking in her pulse. "Then what are you proposing, Mr. Moretti? That I stay locked in your guest wing forever?"
"No," Luca said quietly, leaning down slightly so his dark eyes were level with hers. "I'm proposing something far more permanent."
Before Naomi could ask what he meant, the heavy wooden doors of the study flew open.
Marco, the head of security, stepped inside, his face pale and sweat glistening on his forehead.
"Boss," Marco said quickly, holding a satellite tablet in his hands. "Judge Vance just called an emergency press conference at the Municipal Grand Ballroom downtown. He’s surrounded by the mayor, the police commissioner, and every major news network in the city."
Luca didn't look away from Naomi. "What is he telling them, Marco?"
"He’s claiming that you and an 'unlicensed medical worker' kidnapped his daughter, held her hostage, and fabricated charges of financial abuse to steal his family's property," Marco reported, his voice tight. "He’s issuing an immediate emergency arrest warrant for you... and a city-wide manhunt for Miss Carter."
Naomi’s breath hitched. "A manhunt?"
Luca slowly turned his head toward Marco. "Tell the motorcade to prepare the armored sedans."
"Where are we going, Boss?" Marco asked.
Luca looked back at Naomi, a dangerous, breathtaking smirk spreading across his sharp jawline.
"We are going to the Municipal Grand Ballroom," Luca said calmly. "It’s time the city met my new bride."

Naomi’s heart slammed against her ribs. "Your what?"
"You heard me," Luca said, reaching out to grasp her hand with an iron grip that left no room for negotiation. "You saved my mother’s life today, Naomi. Now, I’m going to make sure no man in this city can ever touch yours again."
