Chapter 4 - The Municipal Ballroom

The Municipal Grand Ballroom was a glittering palace of gold leaf, crystal chandeliers, and mahogany balconies, located in the absolute heart of the city’s financial district.

At 10:00 PM, the room was packed with over five hundred elite citizens—politicians, syndicate lords, high-court judges, and dozens of news camera crews whose flashing bulbs created a blinding storm of white light near the main podium.

Judge Arthur Vance stood behind the podium, dressed in a formal black tuxedo. His face was a mask of calculated grief as he addressed the ocean of microphones pressed against his chest.

"My daughter, Vivian, is currently being held against her will by the Moretti crime syndicate!" Judge Vance announced, his voice booming through the speakers with practiced dramatic flair. "This rogue organization, aided by an unstable home health nurse named Naomi Carter, has attempted to extort my family's legitimate real estate assets!"

The press corps erupted into a frenzy of questions, camera shutters clicking like a thousand swarming insects.

"Judge Vance! Is it true the police commissioner has signed an arrest warrant for Luca Moretti?" a reporter shouted from the front row.

"Yes!" Vance declared, slamming his hand against the podium. "As of ten minutes ago, any officer who encounters Luca Moretti or Naomi Carter has orders to detain them immediately by any means necessary! This city will no longer be bullied by—"

Suddenly, the massive brass doors at the back of the grand ballroom burst open with a deafening BOOM that echoed off the high vaulted ceiling.

The ambient chatter of five hundred elite guests instantly vanished.

Through the doorway stepped six tall men in tailored dark suits, led by Marco, who formed a wide security corridor down the center aisle.

Behind them stepped Luca Moretti.

He looked imposing, calm, and utterly untouchable. But it wasn't Luca that caused five hundred people to collectively gasp in shock.

Tucked securely against his side, her arm brushed against his jacket, was Naomi Carter.

She had been transformed. Gone was the torn white nurse’s apron and simple uniform. In its place, she wore a floor-length, backless gown of deep emerald velvet—the exact color of the Moretti family crest. Around her slender neck hung a vintage diamond necklace that had belonged to Isabella Moretti for forty years. Her dark hair was styled in elegant, sweeping waves, and her chin was held high, her posture radiating quiet, unyielding authority.

The camera flashes exploded into a blinding white wall of light.

"He's here!" someone screamed from the balcony.

"Call security! Shoot him!" a councilman yelled.

Judge Vance’s face turned from pale white to a dark, furious crimson as he gripped the edges of the podium. "Luca Moretti! You dare step into a public hall while under an active arrest warrant?!"

Luca didn't answer right away. He casually escorted Naomi down the center aisle, stepping over the red velvet ropes as if he were walking through his own private living room. The crowded sea of elite politicians and millionaires parted before him like the Red Sea, no one daring to step within five feet of the lethal man.

When Luca reached the base of the stage, he stepped up onto the podium steps, keeping Naomi firmly by his side.

Four armed police officers rushed forward, reaching for their service weapons.

Luca didn't even look at them. He simply raised his left hand, holding a sleek black USB drive between two fingers.

"If any officer unholsters a weapon in the next ten seconds," Luca said, his deep voice carrying effortlessly through the room without the aid of a microphone, "the full audio and video recordings of Judge Vance forcing my mother’s fingerprint onto a forged conservatorship deed will be broadcast live to every federal grand jury server in the country."

The four officers froze in their tracks. They looked at Judge Vance, then at the USB drive in Luca's hand.

"He's bluffing!" Vance shrieked, sweat pouring down his forehead. "Arrest him!"

"I don't bluff, Arthur," Luca said softly, stepping directly up to the main microphone stand and nudging Judge Vance aside with a casual flick of his shoulder.

The room was so quiet you could hear the hum of the television broadcasting equipment.

Luca looked out over the sea of cameras, his arm sliding firmly around Naomi’s waist, pulling her flush against his side. His grip was protective, possessive, and absolute.

"I am here tonight to clear up a public misconception," Luca announced to the entire city, his voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. "Judge Vance has claimed that my family has engaged in extortion and kidnapping."

Luca paused, reaching down to gently take Naomi’s left hand, lifting it directly into the beam of the main camera spotlight.

On Naomi’s ring finger sat a breathtaking twelve-carat black diamond ring—the legendary Moretti Sovereign, a ring that had only been worn by the reigning matriarch of the family for over a century.

The reporters gasped in unison, camera shutters clicking furiously.

"Five hours ago," Luca continued, his eyes sweeping over the stunned audience with absolute triumph, "Naomi Carter saved my mother's life from a pathetic, desperate attempt at family fraud executed by Vivian Vance."

Judge Vance looked like he was about to suffer a stroke where he stood. "You... you lie!"

"And because of her bravery, her loyalty, and her unquestionable honor," Luca said, turning his head to look down into Naomi’s eyes with a intensity that made her breath stop in her throat, "Naomi Carter is no longer an employee of the Moretti estate."

He looked back out at the blinding cameras, his voice ringing through the ballroom like thunder.

"She is my wife. She is the new mistress of Blackwood Ridge. And from this second forward, any threat made against her... is a declaration of war against the entire Moretti empire."
