Chapter 6 - The Aftermath

Marcus walked over to the large mahogany desk in the corner of the library and leaned against it, running a tired hand through his thick dark hair. The tension that had held his shoulders rigid for the past three hours finally seemed to release, revealing the deep exhaustion underneath.

He looked up at me.

“Are you alright, Elena?”

I let out a long breath I felt like I had been holding since seven o’clock that morning. “I... I think so, Mr. Cole. I’m just still in shock. I can’t believe she actually took my phone to do that.”

“People driven by greed and desperation rarely consider the lives they destroy in their wake,” Marcus said. He looked down at Lily, who was currently sitting on the Persian rug, attempting to feed a piece of croissant to her stuffed rabbit. A faint, genuine smile appeared on his face. “She’s remarkably perceptive for three years old.”

“She doesn't miss much,” I admitted, smiling softly. “Sometimes it’s a blessing, sometimes it means she finds where I hide the cookies.”

Marcus chuckled—a warm, rich sound I had never heard from him before. He turned to Marta.

“Marta, please take Lily to the kitchen and have the chef make her whatever she wants. Waffles, ice cream, anything. She just saved this family from a massive financial catastrophe.”

Marta smiled warmly—a rare sight on the usually stern housekeeper’s face. “Right away, Mr. Cole. Come along, little miss.”

Lily jumped up, happily taking Marta’s hand. “Ice cream?”

“Yes, little one,” Marta chuckled as she led her out the door. “Ice cream for breakfast.”

Once the door closed behind them, Marcus turned back to me. His expression became serious, though his eyes remained soft.

“Elena, sit down, please.”

I took a seat on the edge of one of the leather armchairs. Marcus pulled up a chair opposite me.

“First,” he began, “I want to offer my deepest apologies. You were brought into a dangerous situation through no fault of your own. If Vanessa had succeeded, my internal security protocols might have initially pointed toward you, given that your phone was used. You could have faced intense interrogation, loss of employment, or worse.”

“I know,” I whispered, looking at my lap. “That’s what terrified me the most. When you’re in my position, an accusation like that is a life sentence. No one hires a maid with a police record, even if she’s innocent.”

“I am painfully aware of how the system treats people without financial power,” Marcus said quietly. “And I promise you, as long as I am alive, you will never have to worry about your security or your daughter’s future ever again.”

He picked up a pen from his desk and pulled a fresh sheet of stationery toward him.

“Effective immediately, your employment status at Cole Estate is changing.”

I blinked, confused. “Sir?”

“You are no longer a junior housekeeper,” Marcus declared. “I am creating a new position: Head of Personal Security Operations and Household Integrity. You will work directly under me and alongside Marta. Your primary role will be overseeing internal estate access protocols, managing staff verification systems, and ensuring that no unauthorized individuals—family or otherwise—abuse the trust of this household.”

I stared at him, unable to speak. “Mr. Cole... I don't have a background in cybersecurity or executive protection.”

“You have something far more valuable, Elena,” Marcus said, looking directly into my eyes. “You have absolute integrity. You have spatial awareness. And you proved today that you care more about truth than protecting powerful people. Skills can be taught; character cannot. I will pay for whatever certification courses and management training you need.”

He wrote a figure on the paper and turned it toward me.

My breath caught in my throat. The number written on the paper was triple my current annual salary, complete with full health insurance, dental benefits, and a dedicated education fund for Lily.

“This... this is too much, Mr. Cole,” I stammered, tears springing to my eyes. “I can’t accept this.”

“It is not a gift, Elena,” Marcus said firmly, though his tone was gentle. “It is compensation for your loyalty, your stress today, and the value you bring to my life and my family’s legacy. Do we have a deal?”
