Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Web

Over the next forty-eight hours, the estate was transformed into a command center. While news of Vanessa Cain’s arrest broke across financial news networks and tabloid headlines, Marcus’s legal team and forensic accountants worked round-the-clock in the library.

As the newly appointed Head of Household Integrity, I was given a private office adjacent to Marcus’s security suite, equipped with a top-of-the-line workstation and full administrative access to the estate’s monitoring networks.

On Wednesday morning, Marcus walked into my new office carrying two mugs of fresh coffee. He placed one on my desk and sat in the visitor's chair.

“How are you adjusting?” he asked.

“It feels surreal,” I admitted, taking a sip of the coffee. “I keep thinking I need to grab a mop and bucket whenever I see a smudge on the floor.”

Marcus smiled. “Marta would yell at you if you tried. She’s already hired two replacement cleaners to handle your old duties.”

He leaned back, his expression turning analytical. “The forensic team finished analyzing the full history of the wire transfers. It turns out Vanessa wasn't working alone.”

I put my mug down. “Who else was involved?”

“Her brother, Julian Cain,” Marcus revealed. “He was operating an offshore Shell company based in the Cayman Islands that received the stolen funds. But more importantly, we discovered how she managed to get inside my security room in the first place.”

“How?” I asked. “I thought the door required a biometric thumbprint scan.”

“It does,” Marcus said, a dark glint in his eye. “She didn't hack the door, Elena. She had a duplicate physical key card made four months ago by bribing a former technician from the security installation firm I used last year.”

I gasped. “So she had access to your security room for months?”

“Yes. She was waiting for the right moment to execute a transfer large enough to save her father’s firm without raising immediate red flags. She chose the afternoon after my mother’s foundation received its annual corporate donation. She thought the four hundred thousand dollars would go unnoticed in the flurry of incoming transactions.”

“She underestimated you,” I said.

“No,” Marcus replied softly, looking at me with an intensity that made my heart flutter slightly. “She underestimated you. And she completely failed to account for a little girl in a purple dress.”

He pulled a thick folder from his coat and placed it on my desk. “This is the formal civil lawsuit my attorneys are filing against the Cain Group. We are freezing all of their personal assets and foreclosing on their estate in Greenwich. By next week, the Cain family will not own a single square inch of property in this state.”

“What about Vanessa?”

“She’s being held without bail at the county detention facility. Her trial is set for three months from now. She’s facing up to fifteen years in federal prison.”

I took a deep breath, feeling a strange mix of relief and solemnity. “It’s crazy how fast an empire can crumble.”

“Empires built on lies always fall quickly, Elena,” Marcus said softly. He stood up, resting his hands on the edge of my desk. “Which is why I intend to build my life on something far more solid from now on.”

His eyes lingered on mine for a moment longer than necessary before he straightened up. “Come downstairs when you’re ready. My mother is arriving at noon. She wants to personally thank the young lady who saved her foundation.”
