Chapter 10 - The Master of the Estate

A agonizing silence stretched across the warehouse. Victor stared at Adrian, trying to find a flicker of bluff in the mafia boss’s eyes, but he found only cold, unyielding granite.

Victor cursed under his breath and shoved Marcus. “Bring the kid down. Take the binder.”

Marcus hesitated, trembling, but slowly walked down the metal stairs, dragging Lily behind him. The little girl was crying, her face smudged with dirt, holding her battered rabbit tightly against her chest.

“Mommy!” Lily sobbed when she saw Clara.

“Lily!” Clara cried out, but Adrian held her back with a firm arm.

“Wait until she crosses the line,” Adrian whispered softly.

Marcus reached the concrete floor, holding Lily in front of him as a shield. He stopped ten feet from Adrian. “Drop the detonator and hand over the box, Moretti.”

“Take your hands off the child first,” Adrian commanded.

Marcus released Lily’s arm. The little girl immediately bolted across the concrete floor into Clara’s open arms. Clara collapsed onto her knees, sobbing uncontrollably as she pulled her daughter tight against her chest.

In that exact split second, Adrian acted.

He didn't drop the detonator—he tossed the binder into the air toward Marcus. As Marcus instinctively reached up to catch it, Adrian drew his suppressed firearm with blinding speed and shot Marcus twice in the chest.

Before Victor’s mercenaries on the gantry could react, the skylights above shattered into a million pieces. Daniel and six Moretti tactical operatives rappelled down on ropes, opening fire with precision submachine guns.

The warehouse erupted into chaotic gunfire. Adrian pulled Clara and Lily behind a thick concrete pillar, shielding them with his own body as bullets chipped away at the masonry.

“Stay down!” Adrian ordered, returning fire smoothly.

Within forty seconds, all six mercenaries had fallen from the gantry. Victor Kane, wounded in the leg, tried to crawl toward an emergency exit near the rear dock.

Adrian walked out from behind the pillar, his boots heavy against the concrete. He reached Victor, stepping down hard on the man’s wounded leg. Victor gasped in agony, rolling onto his back, staring up into the barrel of Adrian’s gun.

“Moretti... please...” Victor gasped, blood trickling from his mouth. “We... we can make a deal...”

“You broke the rule, Victor,” Adrian said quietly, looking down at him with utter disdain. “You came into my house. You touched a child under my protection.”

Adrian pulled the trigger.

Two weeks later, the morning sun shone brightly over the lush green lawns of the Moretti estate. The tension that had hung over the mansion for months had completely dissolved. The federal authorities, armed with the uncorrupted files provided by Clara Vance, had seized all of Kane Enterprises' assets and dismantled Victor’s network permanently.

Clara stood on the expansive stone terrace overlooking the north garden, wearing an elegant cream-colored dress instead of her old maid’s uniform.

Adrian stepped out onto the terrace, holding two cups of fresh coffee. He handed one to her.

“The legal team finalized the paperwork this morning,” Adrian said, leaning against the stone balustrade. “You and Lily have complete legal immunity, a new trust fund established from Julian’s clean assets, and full protection under the Moretti estate name.”

Clara looked at him, her eyes shining with deep emotion. “You’ve done so much for us, Adrian. I don't even know how to begin thank you. We can leave whenever you’re ready for us to get out of your hair.”

Adrian turned his head, looking down at the garden where Lily was running through the grass, laughing as she chased a golden retriever puppy Daniel had brought her.

“Who said anything about leaving?” Adrian asked softly.

Clara blinked, caught off guard. “What?”

“The east wing is empty,” Adrian said, a rare, genuine warm smile appearing on his face. “And my house has been far too quiet for twenty years. Besides, Lily made me promise that her mother wouldn't have to work late anymore.”

Clara laughed, a sound free of fear for the first time in five years. She stepped closer to him, resting her hand lightly on his arm. “Are you sure you can handle two women in this house, Mr. Moretti?”

“I’ve handled federal prosecutors, rival mobsters, and street wars,” Adrian said, looking down at her with uncharacteristic tenderness. “I think I can handle you two.”

Down in the garden, Lily looked up, waved her small hand vigorously at the terrace, and shouted at the top of her lungs:

May you like

“Look, Mommy! The king is smiling!”

Adrian chuckled softly, taking a sip of his coffee as he watched the little girl play in the morning light—the master of the estate finally at peace in his home.
