Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Wall

The next two days passed in a tense, claustrophobic calm. The Moretti estate had effectively turned into a fortress under siege. Outside the gates, reporters and strange vehicles occasionally circled, kept at bay by private security. Inside, Clara and Lily adapted to their strange new reality.

Despite his terrifying reputation, Adrian found himself drawn to the small suite more often than his duties strictly required. He was a man who had spent his life surrounded by men who feared him or wanted something from him. But Lily treated him with an absurd, unfiltered familiarity that both irritated and captivated him.

On the third afternoon, Adrian entered the room to find Lily sitting on his plush Persian rug, meticulously arranging his collection of expensive fountain pens into a neat row.

“Lily, those are not toys,” Clara said quickly, rushing over from the dining table where she was reviewing financial documents. “I’m so sorry, Adrian, I was just reading the...”

Adrian held up a hand, stopping her. He walked over, squatted down beside Lily, and looked at the pens.

“She put them in order of size,” Adrian noted neutrally. “That’s actually quite efficient.”

Lily looked up at him proudly. “The black ones are the soldiers. The gold one is the king.” She pointed at a limited-edition Montblanc pen. “That’s you.”

Adrian’s lips twitched with the ghost of a smile. “Is that so?”

“Yes. Because you’re the biggest and you don't let the bad man in.”

Clara watched the interaction with a mixture of wonder and lingering anxiety. “Adrian, I’ve been looking over the encrypted files on the flash drive. There’s a master key code needed to unlock the federal judge corruption files. Julian knew it, but he was killed before he could write it down.”

Adrian stood up, his smile vanishing as his analytical mind took over. “Where would Julian have hidden a key code?”

“He kept a private cabin in Geneva Lake,” Clara said. “He always said if anything happened to him, his most precious secrets were locked in his boat house safe. But Victor has that property heavily guarded.”

“Then we go get it,” Adrian said without hesitation.

“We?” Clara asked, her eyes widening. “You can't leave the estate. It’s too dangerous!”

“It’s more dangerous to sit here and wait for Victor to find a flaw in our defense,” Adrian replied coldly. “Tonight, Daniel and I will take a team to Geneva Lake. You and Lily will stay here in the bunker.”

“No,” Clara said firmly, stepping toward him. “The boathouse safe uses a biometric scanner calibrated to Julian’s bloodline or a secondary passkey only I know. If you go without me, you won't be able to open it without blowing it up and destroying the drives inside.”

Adrian stared down at her, assessing her determination. She wasn't just a timid maid anymore; she was a mother fighting for her child’s future.

“Fine,” Adrian declared. “You come with us. But Lily stays here under Michael’s direct care.”
