Chapter 2 - The Whispers of Greenwich

By the next morning, news of Lucas's miraculous recovery had spread through the Carter estate like wildfire.

The tense, suffocating atmosphere that had gripped the mansion for days gave way to a fragile relief. However, that relief was quickly shadowed by quiet chatter among the household staff. The head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, watched with a mixture of awe and stern skepticism as Maya was officially moved from her basement quarters to a lavish guest room right next to the nursery on the second floor.

Vanessa Hale appeared at breakfast looking pristine as ever, clad in a silk robe, sipping black coffee. Her eyes, however, were tight and sharp as she watched Maya walk into the dining room carrying a fresh set of baby clothes.

"So, you're the miracle worker," Vanessa said, her tone dripping with passive condescension rather than motherly relief. She didn't offer a word of thanks. Instead, she leaned back in her leather chair, surveying Maya from head to toe. "My husband tells me you offered your... services. Quite an unconventional solution, don't you think?"

"It was a matter of life and death, Mrs. Carter," Maya replied calmly, keeping her posture upright despite the cold weight of Vanessa's gaze. "The baby was starving."

"Well, he is fine now," Vanessa snapped mildly, dabbing her lips with a cloth napkin. "We have hired a elite pediatric team from Boston arriving this afternoon to take over. You've done your part, Maya. Richard may be overly emotional right now, but we don't need a housemaid lingering in our nursery indefinitely."

"She stays, Vanessa," Richard’s firm voice broke through as he entered the dining room, holding a leather briefcase. His face was restored to its usual authoritative authority, though his eyes softened when he looked at Maya. "The Boston doctors already reviewed Lucas this morning. They confirmed his body rejected the synthetic formulas completely. Maya's milk saved him, and until Lucas is old enough for solid food, she remains his primary caregiver. That is non-negotiable."

Vanessa's eyes flashed with anger, but she controlled herself, letting out a sharp chuckle. "Of course, Richard. Whatever you think is best for our son."

She emphasized the word our with a subtle, icy bite that did not escape Maya's notice.

Later that afternoon, while Richard was at his corporate headquarters in downtown Manhattan and Vanessa was out for her scheduled lunch at the country club, Maya had her first opportunity to investigate the deep suspicion growing inside her.

Holding Lucas gently against her shoulder as he napped, Maya walked down the quiet wing of the mansion toward Vanessa’s private study. She knew she was risking her job—and potentially her freedom—if she were caught snooping, but the image of that star-shaped birthmark kept burning in her mind.

The door to Vanessa's study was unlocked. Maya slipped inside, her heart beating frantically against her ribs. The room smelled expensive, filled with mahogany wood, fresh orchids, and high-end perfume. A polished oak desk sat near the bay window.

Maya set Lucas down safely in a portable bassinet she had brought along, then moved quickly behind the desk. She began opening drawers, searching through stacks of real estate filings, charity event invitations, and personal letters.

In the bottom right drawer, under a stack of fashion magazines, she found an envelope from St. Anne’s Medical Center—the exact same hospital where Maya had given birth six weeks ago.

Her hands trembled as she pulled out the medical documents inside. They were medical records detailing Lucas’s adoption and birth certificate registration. But as Maya scanned the pages, something did not add up.

According to the official Carter narrative, Vanessa had given birth to Lucas at a private clinic in Switzerland. That was what the newspapers had reported, and that was what the staff had been told. Why, then, were there confidential billing statements and private donor records from St. Anne’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, dated the exact night Maya was in labor?

Maya flipped to the next page. It was a wire transfer confirmation.

A payment of $250,000 had been sent from an offshore account linked to Vanessa Hale to a lead physician at St. Anne’s Medical Center—Dr. Julian Vance. The payment had cleared at 3:15 AM on June 14th.

June 14th was the night Lily was pronounced dead.

Maya gasped, covering her mouth to suppress a scream. The pieces of a nightmare were beginning to lock together. Dr. Vance had been her attending physician that night. He was the one who had taken her baby away, citing critical respiratory failure, and he was the one who had informed her an hour later that her child hadn't made it.

Maya dropped the papers back onto the desk, her knees weak. She looked over at the bassinet where the baby was sleeping peacefully.

Lucas was born on June 14th. He was at St. Anne's Medical Center on June 14th. He bore the exact same star-shaped mark behind his ear that Maya had kissed before her baby was whisked away.

"He isn't their son," Maya whispered, tears blinding her vision. "He's my child."

Suddenly, the heavy wooden door of the study creaked open.

May you like

"What are you doing in here?" a sharp voice demanded.

Maya whirled around, her heart sinking into her stomach. Vanessa stood at the doorway, her arms crossed, her eyes narrowed in cold fury.
