Chapter 5 - A Mother’s Rebirth

The silence that followed was terrifying.

Dr. Vance froze, his mouth half-open, the color completely drained from his skin. The syringe in his trembling hand fell onto the hardwood floor with a sharp clatter.

"R-Richard..." Vance stammered, his voice cracking. "Mr. Carter... please, this woman is insane. She's delusional—"

"Silence," Richard said. The word was not shouted, but it carried a terrifying weight that paralyzed the room.

Richard stepped into the nursery. He didn't look at Vance. His eyes were fixed on Maya, who stood holding the baby against her heart, her tears flowing freely down her cheeks.

"Is it true?" Richard asked, his voice shaking with a pain so deep it threatened to shatter him. "Is what she said true?"

Maya looked into Richard's eyes. She saw a man whose entire reality had just been dismantled.

"Look behind his left ear, Mr. Carter," Maya whispered, her voice raw. "The star-shaped birthmark. I marked my baby the night she was born. They told me she was a girl... they told me she died. But it's him. It's always been him."

Richard slowly approached. His hands, usually so firm and decisive in the boardroom, trembled uncontrollably as he reached out. Gently, reverently, he moved the soft blanket away from the sleeping baby's neck and looked behind his left ear.

There it was. A tiny, distinct, star-shaped mark.

Richard closed his eyes. A heavy, broken sob escaped his chest. The legal documents, Vanessa’s sudden 'surrogacy' arrangements, the refusal to let him visit the clinic in Europe, the secret wire transfers—everything flashed through his mind, clicking into a horrific picture of deceit.

"My God," Richard breathed, dropping to one knee. "My God... what has she done?"

He looked up at Dr. Vance. The doctor tried to rush toward the door, but Richard’s two security guards instantly grabbed him, slamming him against the wall and forcing his arms behind his back.

"Call the state police," Richard ordered, his voice cold as ice. "Tell the Chief of Police to come here personally. And find my wife. Have security intercept her at the Hamptons estate and bring her back here in handcuffs if necessary."

"Mr. Carter, please!" Vance pleaded, crying out as the guards dragged him out of the nursery. "It was Vanessa's idea! She paid me! She said you would leave her if she couldn't give you an heir! Please!"

His desperate cries faded down the hallway, leaving the nursery in a quiet, heavy calm.

Richard remained on his knees for a long time, his head bowed. When he finally stood up, he looked decades older. He walked over to Maya, looking at her not as an employer looking at a maid, but as a man burdened by an unforgivable crime committed in his name.

"Maya," Richard said softly, tears streaming down his face. "I... I didn't know. I swear on my life, I had no idea."

"I know, Mr. Carter," Maya said gently, holding the baby close. "I know you loved him."

"He isn't my son," Richard whispered, his voice cracking with grief. "He is yours. He was always yours."

Over the next forty-eight hours, the Carter empire experienced a seismic scandal that rocked Connecticut society. Vanessa Hale was arrested at a luxury resort in the Hamptons and charged with human trafficking, conspiracy, and fraud. Dr. Julian Vance was stripped of his medical license and held on a million-dollar bond, facing decades in federal prison alongside several corrupt hospital administrators at St. Anne's.

The news shocked the country: The Millionaire's Wife Who Bought a Baby from a Maid.

Through it all, Maya remained inside the Greenwich mansion—not as a servant, but as the true mother of the child.

A week later, the legal proceedings concluded smoothly. With Richard's full cooperation and top legal team representing Maya, the fake birth certificate was destroyed, and a new one was issued. Lucas was legally restored to his mother, bearing his true name: Leo Brooks.

On a bright, sunny afternoon, Maya stood on the front lawn of the Carter estate, carrying Leo in a soft baby carrier. Her old blue cleaning uniform was gone, replaced by a simple, elegant beige dress.

Richard walked out of the mansion to meet her. He looked tired, but a serene peace had returned to his eyes.

"The moving truck has loaded all your belongings, Maya," Richard said, offering a sad, genuine smile. "The house in Ohio near your mother is ready. I’ve transferred the trust fund into Leo’s name. It will ensure he never wants for anything—education, healthcare, a future."

Maya looked at him, deeply moved. "Richard... you don't owe us this. You were a victim too."

"I owe him everything," Richard replied, looking down at the sleeping baby. "He gave me five days of believing I was a father. And you... you saved his life when nobody else could. A father's duty is to protect his child, and the best way I can protect him now is to let him be with the mother who fought the world to save him."

Richard leaned down and kissed Leo gently on the forehead. "Goodbye, little guy."

"Thank you, Richard," Maya said softly.

Maya turned and walked toward the car waiting at the end of the driveway. As she opened the door, she looked back one last time at the grand glass-and-stone mansion that had once filled her with such fear and heartache.

She looked down at her son. Leo opened his bright blue eyes, looking up at her, and let out a soft, sweet giggle—a sound full of life, health, and innocence.

Maya smiled, a tear of pure joy falling down her cheek as she kissed him behind his left ear.

"Let's go home, Leo," she whispered. "We're finally going home."
