Chapter 3 - THE AMBUSH IN THE NURSERY

On the second floor, the nursery was dim and warm.

Claire stood by the crib, holding the bottle of distilled water María had swapped into the kitchen. She looked down at Sebastian, her brow furrowed in mild annoyance.

The infant lay on his back, refusing to latch onto the rubber nipple. He was weak, turning his small head slowly from side to side, a faint, dry whimper escaping his throat.

"Drink it, you stubborn little thing," Claire muttered under her breath, pressing the tip of the bottle against the child’s lips. "You're ruining the schedule."

Behind her, the heavy white door of the nursery swung open.

Claire turned, expecting to see Victoria or one of the domestic staff.

Instead, she found herself staring into the cold, unblinking eyes of Detective Inspector Elena Vance, flanked by María.

Claire froze, her hand remaining poised above the crib.

"Who are you?" Claire demanded, her voice instantly dropping into an icy, defensive posture. "This is a private residence. Visitors are not allowed in the nursery without Mrs. Carter’s permission."

"I don't need Mrs. Carter’s permission to enter my sister's house," Elena said smoothly, stepping into the room with quiet, predatory grace. She closed the door behind her, clicking the brass lock into place.

Claire’s eyes flicked to María standing beside Elena, and then to the badge clipped to Elena’s belt. A tiny spark of panic flickered across the nurse’s face, quickly smoothed over by years of practiced coldness.

"Inspector Vance," Claire said, recovering her composure. "Your brother-in-law made it clear months ago that you were not welcome on this property. You are trespassing. If you don't leave immediately, I will call estate security."

"Call them," Elena replied flatly, taking two slow steps toward the crib. "Let's bring security up here. Let's also bring the State Bureau of Investigation, the Child Protective Services Unit, and the District Attorney's Homicide Division."

Claire’s fingers tightened around the glass bottle. "I have no idea what you're talking about. I am a licensed healthcare professional caring for a sick child under direct medical supervision."

"You are a paid killer," Elena said, her voice striking the dim room like an iron hammer. "And that bottle in your hand doesn't contain formula, Claire. It contains distilled water from María’s cleaning cart."

Claire’s face drained of color so fast she looked like a corpse. Her eyes darted down to the glass bottle in her hand, then back to María.

"You..." Claire whispered, her voice cracking. "You touched my preparations?"

"She saved my nephew's life," Elena said, stepping directly into Claire’s personal space. "We have already tested the formula you mixed in the pantry ten minutes ago. We know about the Digoxin. We know about the dose regimen. And we know exactly what you and Victoria have been doing to this child for twelve weeks."

Claire backed away toward the changing table, her hands trembling violently. "You... you have no authority here! That sample isn't admissible! You took it without a warrant!"

"A private citizen retrieved evidence of an ongoing violent felony to prevent an immediate loss of life," Elena stated coldly, citing the legal precedent with terrifying precision. "That makes it completely admissible in every state and federal court in this circuit. You are caught, Claire. The trap has already sprung."

At that exact moment, the nursery door handle rattled aggressively from the outside.

"Claire?" Victoria’s voice came through the thick wood, sharp and impatient. "Why is this door locked? Is he asleep yet? Richard’s driver just called—his car entered the main gates."

Claire looked at the locked door, then back at Elena’s gun, her eyes wide with total terror.

"Answer her," Elena whispered, her hand resting on her holster. "Speak normally."

Claire swallowed hard, her throat dry as sand. "Victoria... I'm... I'm just finishing up. Give me one moment."

"Open the door right now," Victoria snapped, her voice dropping all pretense of sweetness. "I need this handled before Richard steps through the front entrance!"

Elena reached out, grabbed Claire by the collar of her white uniform, and shoved her quietly into the corner near the closet, gesturing for María to keep her pinned.

Then, Elena reached out and turned the brass lock, pulling the door wide open.

Victoria stepped across the threshold, holding a tablet computer in one hand and a glass of wine in the other.

"Claire, I told you hours ago that—"

Victoria stopped dead in her tracks.

She found herself standing face-to-face with Elena Vance.

For three long seconds, the silence in the nursery was absolute. The gentle hum of the air-conditioning was the only sound in the room.

Victoria’s eyes traveled from Elena’s face, down to the police badge on her belt, then over to Claire cowering in the corner, and finally to María holding the spare bottle of water.

The glass of wine slipped from Victoria’s fingers.

CRASH.

The glass shattered against the hardwood floor, dark red wine splashing across the white rug like a fresh stain of blood.
