Chapter 4 - THE DOWNFALL OF THE MATRIX

Victoria didn't scream. She didn't faint. Her reaction was instantaneous, calculated, and cold.

She stepped back into the hallway, pulling her cell phone from her pocket with lightning speed, her thumb flying across the touchscreen.

"Security!" Victoria yelled into the phone, her voice echoing down the wide corridors of the mansion. "Code Red in the upper west wing! Trespassers in the nursery! Call the police immediately!"

Elena stepped out of the nursery into the hallway, her badge displayed clearly in her palm.

"Put the phone down, Victoria," Elena said calmly. "It's over."

"You are delusional!" Victoria spat, her face contorting into an expression of pure, venomous rage. "You broke into my home! You are harassing my staff! I will have you stripped of your badge by nightfall! Get off my property!"

Down the grand staircase, heavy footsteps pounded against the marble. Two private security guards employed by the estate came rushing up the stairs, their hands resting on their holstered sidearms.

"Mrs. Carter!" the head security officer yelled, coming to a halt at the top of the stairs. "What’s happening?"

"Arrest this woman!" Victoria screamed, pointing a shaking finger at Elena. "She broke in! She’s threatening me and the baby’s nurse!"

The security guards moved toward Elena, but before they could lay a hand on her, the massive front double doors of the mansion swung open on the ground floor below.

Richard Carter walked into the grand foyer, accompanied by his personal driver and carry-on luggage. He looked exhausted, his tie loosened, his eyes heavy with the weight of another long flight and endless worry over his dying son.

He stopped in the center of the foyer, looking up at the second-floor balcony at the chaotic scene unfolding above.

"What is going on here?" Richard’s voice boomed through the high-ceilinged mansion.

Victoria’s posture changed in a fraction of a second.

The venom on her face vanished, replaced instantly by an expression of terrified, trembling innocence. She let out a small, breathless sob, rushing down the grand curved staircase toward her husband, throwing her arms around his neck.

"Oh, Richard! Thank God you're home!" Victoria wailed, her tears flowing effortlessly. "It’s your sister-in-law! She snuck into the house with María! They cornered Claire in the nursery! They were trying to take Sebastian! They're crazy, Richard! They claimed we were hurting him!"

Richard froze. He looked up the staircase, his eyes meeting those of Elena Vance.

"Elena?" Richard stammered, his voice laced with confusion, shock, and deep-seated pain. "What are you doing in my house? I told you... after everything that happened... you can't be here."

Elena walked slowly down the marble staircase, her steps deliberate, steady, and unhurried. María followed two steps behind her, holding a sealed clear biohazard bag containing the original bottle of formula and Dr. Lee’s preliminary toxicology report.

"Richard," Elena said gently, her voice cutting through Victoria’s fake sobs like a clean beam of light. "Look at me."

"Richard, don't listen to her!" Victoria begged, pulling on his arm. "She’s trying to ruin us! She’s always hated me because I replaced Emily! Security, get her out of here now!"

"Stand down, Security!" Richard barked, his voice echoing off the marble walls with sudden, commanding authority. He looked up at Elena, his brow furrowed. "Elena... what is this?"

Elena stopped on the fourth step from the bottom, looking down into her brother-in-law's tired, grief-stricken face.

"Richard," Elena said softly. "Why do you think Sebastian has been dying for three months?"

Richard blinked, swallowed hard, his voice trembling. "He... he has a genetic digestive condition. The doctors said—"

"The doctors were looking for a disease, Richard," Elena interrupted, setting the clear biohazard bag containing the toxicology report into Richard’s hands. "They weren't looking for Digoxin."

Richard looked down at the official State Crime Laboratory paper through the clear plastic bag. His eyes scanned the bold red letters printed across the top: EVIDENCE RECORD — ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE / POISONING OF AN INFANT.

"Digoxin...?" Richard whispered, his mind struggling to comprehend the words on the page. "What... what is this?"

"It’s a cardiac medication," Elena explained, her voice steady and relentless. "Victoria and Claire have been putting it into Sebastian’s formula every single afternoon at five o'clock. It suppressed his appetite, slowed his heart, and induced artificial organ failure. They were slowly starving your son to death so Victoria could secure full administrative control of your estate upon his death."

Richard’s face went entirely slack. He stared at the paper, then looked at Victoria, who was suddenly frozen against his side, her tears drying instantly.

"No..." Richard whispered, shaking his head in sheer denial. "No... Victoria loves Sebastian... she brought in the specialist... she's been helping him..."

"María saw them, Richard," Elena said, pointing back to the housekeeper. "María stood outside the pantry two hours ago and watched Claire measure the drops into the bottle while Victoria gave the orders. María swapped the bottle, called me, and saved your son’s life."

Richard turned his head slowly, looking down at Victoria.

The warmth was gone from his eyes. The grief was gone. In its place was a cold, terrifying void.

"Victoria?" Richard asked, his voice barely a whisper. "Tell me she's lying."

Victoria backed away from him by half a pace. Her face, usually so smooth and controlled, began to crack. Her eyes darted toward the front doors, then toward the security guards, realizing with terrifying clarity that her entire carefully constructed reality was disintegrating around her.

"Richard... darling... she’s lying," Victoria stammered, her voice losing its sweet resonance. "It's a setup! María modified the bottle! She hates me! She’s always wanted me gone!"

"We have the pantry keypad access logs from forty-five minutes ago, Victoria," Elena added, pulling her phone from her pocket and pressing play on an audio file. "And we have Claire’s full, recorded confession from the nursery five minutes ago."

The small speaker on Elena’s phone broadcast Claire’s terrified, sobbing voice through the high-ceilinged foyer:

“—It was Victoria! She paid me fifty thousand dollars in cash upfront! She told me to use the Digoxin! She said nobody would suspect an infant with a documented medical history! Please, don't shoot! It was all Victoria’s plan!—”

The audio clip ended.

The foyer fell into absolute, deafening silence.

Richard Carter stood entirely motionless for five long seconds.

Then, a sound came from deep within his chest—a raw, guttural roar of pure, unadulterated fury that shook the chandelier hanging above the foyer.

He turned on Victoria, his large hands clenching into fists at his sides.

Victoria shrieked in terror, stumbling backward, tripping over her high heels and falling hard onto the marble floor.

"Get away from me!" Victoria screamed, crawling backward toward the open front doors. "Security! Help me!"

The two security guards didn't move an inch. They stood frozen, staring at Victoria with utter disgust and horror.

Before Victoria could reach the threshold, the outer driveway filled with flashing red and blue lights.

Four marked State Police cruisers tore up the brick driveway, tires screeching against the gravel. Eight uniformed officers spilled out of the vehicles with drawn weapons, led by State Prosecuting Attorney Marcus Thorne.

"Victoria Hale!" Attorney Thorne’s voice boomed over a loudspeaker. "Stay where you are! You are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, child abuse, and conspiracy!"

Two female officers rushed forward, pinning Victoria to the marble floor, pulling her arms behind her back, and snapping cold steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

In the hallway above, Claire was led down the stairs in handcuffs by two state troopers, her head bowed, weeping hysterically.

Victoria was dragged to her feet. As she was led past Richard toward the waiting police cruiser, she looked at him, her face distorted by rage and panic.

"Richard! Please!" Victoria wailed, her voice cracking. "I did it for us! You were so broken! You couldn't handle a baby! We could have been happy!"

Richard didn't answer her. He didn't even look at her. He stood like an iron statue as the police shoved her into the back of the cruiser and slammed the door shut.
