Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Estate

The night air was thick with tension. From the balcony of her third-floor suite, Emma could see the perimeter lights of the estate glowing through the heavy downpour. Black SUVs swept through the iron gates at odd hours, their headlights cutting harsh white swathes through the dark trees.

Lily was asleep in her bedroom, oblivious to the quiet storm brewing outside, but Emma couldn't sleep. She paced the floor of her living room, her mind racing with images of Dante leaving the estate with an armed convoy. She hated how much she cared. She had told herself this was purely a business arrangement—a transaction to save Lily’s education—yet every time she closed her eyes, she saw the raw, exposed look in Dante’s eyes when he spoke about his father.

Around three in the morning, a soft sound echoed down the hallway outside her room. It wasn't the heavy, rhythmically spaced boots of the night guards. It was light, erratic, and accompanied by the faint dragging of fabric.

Emma opened her door an inch, peeking into the dim corridor.

Rosa was wandering down the hallway in her silk nightgown, her hands moving frantically in the empty space around her. Her face was pale, twisted in a look of absolute, terrified panic. She was hyperventilating, her eyes darting wildly to the dark corners of the ceiling.

Emma pulled the door open and stepped out into the hall. "Rosa?" she called, then immediately remembered and raised her hands: “Rosa! What is wrong?”

Rosa rushed toward Emma, grabbing her shoulders with surprising strength. Her fingers flew in panicked, disjointed movements: “The red lights! The cars! They brought him back! Just like his father! He is on the floor!”

Emma realized instantly what was happening. The frantic midnight movements of the guards and the flashing lights of returning security vehicles had triggered a severe PTSD flashback. In Rosa’s mind, the dark memory of her husband’s murder twenty years ago was playing out all over again, and she believed Dante was dead.

“Listen to me,” Emma signed firmly, taking Rosa’s cold hands in her own to anchor her. “Dante is not on the floor. He is safe. Look at me, Rosa. Breath with me.”

Rosa shook her head violently, tears streaming down her face, signing erratically: “No, no! I cannot hear them! I never hear them when they come! The dark is full of blood!”

"Rosa!"

A deep, commanding voice roared from the end of the corridor.

Emma turned to see Dante marching down the hall. His jacket was gone, his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar and stained with dirt along the sleeve, but he was completely unharmed.

Rosa didn't hear his voice, but she felt the heavy vibrations of his running footsteps against the hardwood floor. She turned her head, her eyes wide as Dante skidded to a stop in front of them.

Before Dante could speak, Emma grabbed his arm. "Don't speak!" Emma ordered sharply. "Show her!"

Dante caught his breath, looking at his mother's terrified, tear-streaked face. The ruthless mob boss vanished. He stepped close to his mother, dropping to his knees on the cold hallway floor so he was looking up at her, completely vulnerable.

He raised his large hands into the space between them, making the movements large, slow, and unshakeably firm: “I am here. I am alive. No blood. I am safe.”

Rosa gasped, her hands hovering over his face. She touched his cheeks, his shoulders, feeling the warm, solid reality of her son alive in front of her.

Dante didn't break eye contact. He signed again, slowly, putting every drop of emotion into the facial expression Emma had taught him: “I will always come back to you. I promise.”

Rosa sank to her knees right there in the hallway, pulling Dante’s head into her chest, weeping softly into his hair. Dante wrapped his powerful arms around his mother, holding her tight, closing his eyes as he rested his forehead against her shoulder.

Standing in the quiet corridor, watching the two of them held in each other's arms, Emma felt a hot tear slip down her own cheek. The terrifying wall Dante had spent twenty years building around his mother hadn't just been breached—it had completely shattered. And in its place was a quiet, invincible bridge built entirely of moving hands.
