Chapter 7 - The Unseen Listener

In the weeks following the incident in the hallway, the atmosphere inside the Moretti estate transformed dramatically. The heavy, oppressive silence that had once defined the household was gone.

Dante insisted that every senior member of his personal guard learn basic emergency sign language. Mario, a tough veteran who had spent thirty years in the syndicate, was forced to sit at the kitchen table every afternoon with sixteen-year-old Lily, who brutally mocked his awkward hand movements until he finally mastered the sign for 'security alert.'

The estate had become a vibrant, dual-language hub. But with that transformation came an unexpected side effect that Dante hadn't anticipated: Rosa was no longer an isolated observer. She was now the ultimate silent listener in a house full of secrets.

One afternoon, Emma was sitting with Rosa on the sunlit back patio, reviewing advanced literary signs, while Dante held a low-toned business meeting at a iron table fifty yards away near the garden fountain. Dante was speaking with two high-ranking lieutenants from a rival family who had requested a temporary sit-down to negotiate territory lines.

The rival lieutenants were speaking in hurried, hushed tones, keeping their voices low so the guards positioned along the perimeter couldn't hear the specific terms.

Suddenly, Rosa’s eyes narrowed. She stopped looking at Emma's lesson book and fixed her gaze entirely on the three men by the fountain.

Emma noticed the sudden change in Rosa’s posture. "Rosa? What is it?"

Rosa didn't look back at Emma. Instead, her hands began to move under the glass table, completely hidden from the view of the men fifty yards away. She was reading their lips with microscopic precision, translating their hushed verbal conversation straight to Emma.

“The man in the blue suit,” Rosa signed, her fingers moving like lightning. “He is lying to Dante. His mouth says they want peace in the northern district, but his jaw twitches when he speaks about the warehouses. He is hiding something under his coat.”

Emma’s heart hammered against her ribs. She looked across the lawn. The lieutenant in the blue suit was leaning in, his hands tucked deep into his heavy coat pocket, smiling smoothly at Dante.

“He just whispered to his associate,” Rosa signed, her face cold and focused. “He said, 'When the car starts, pull the signal.'”

Emma didn't hesitate. She stood up from the patio table, pulled a tray of cold espresso glasses from the side server, and walked directly across the open lawn toward the fountain.

"More refreshment, gentlemen?" Emma announced loudly, stepping right between Dante and the man in the blue suit.

Dante looked up, a quick flash of irritation in his eyes at the interruption—until he saw Emma's hands.

While holding the heavy silver tray balanced on her left arm, Emma used her right hand, positioned behind her hip where only Dante could see it, to sign rapidly: “Blue suit is lying. Trap at the cars. Weapon in his coat.”

Dante’s reaction was terrifyingly smooth. His expression didn't change by a fraction of a millimeter. He didn't flinch, he didn't raise his voice, and he didn't look at his mother sitting fifty yards away on the patio.

"Thank you, Emma," Dante said smoothly, reaching out as if to take a cup from the tray.

In a movement so fast it seemed almost inhuman, Dante reached past the tray, grabbed the lieutenant in the blue suit by his throat, and slammed him face-first onto the marble edge of the fountain.

Before the second lieutenant could react, Mario and three guards had jumped over the garden wall, weapons drawn, pinning the men to the stone pavement. Mario reached into the blue-suited man's coat and pulled out a suppressed handgun and a remote detonator.

The entire exchange took less than ten seconds.

Dante stood over the groaning man, wiping a drop of water from his cufflink. He turned his head slowly to look at Emma, who was still holding the silver tray, her breathing shallow. Then he looked past her, toward the patio, where Rosa sat quietly sipping her tea, setting her cup down with elegant grace.

Dante let out a low, breathy laugh—a sound of genuine, dark amusement.

"My God," Dante whispered, stepping close to Emma and gently taking the heavy tray from her shaking hands. "My mother isn't just surviving in this house anymore. She's running my intelligence network."
