Chapter 7 - The Family He Never Knew

Gabriel stood outside the nursery.

Emma slept peacefully.

One tiny hand rested against her cheek.

He stared at her for a long time.

His sister.

Lucia.

The woman he had buried twenty years ago.

She had left behind a daughter.

His niece.

And no one had told him.

Sarah explained everything.

Lucia had secretly married a man outside the family.

Their father had forbidden it.

When Lucia became pregnant, she disappeared.

Everyone believed she had run away.

She hadn't.

She had been hiding.

After Lucia died, her daughter was placed under Hannah's care because the people hunting the Marlowe family were searching for the child.

Daniel had been assigned to protect her.

Hannah had believed he was her husband because that was the identity created to keep them safe.

Gabriel looked at Hannah.

"You knew none of this?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Why did you agree?"

"Because Daniel told me that if I loved the baby, I had to keep her alive."

Gabriel looked at Emma.

He felt something break inside him.

Twenty years of anger.

Twenty years of believing Lucia had abandoned him.

All of it had been built on a lie.

He sat beside the crib.

Emma opened her eyes.

She smiled.

Gabriel laughed softly.

"You have terrible timing."

She reached toward him.

He picked her up.

She rested against his chest.

The same way she had done on the first morning.

He closed his eyes.

For twenty years, Gabriel had believed family was something that had been taken from him.

He finally understood.

Some family had been waiting for him.

Hannah watched from the doorway.

Gabriel looked at her.

"Thank you."

She shook her head.

"I didn't know."

"You protected her."

"I loved her."

Gabriel nodded.

"That's enough."

Hannah looked down.

"What happens now?"

Gabriel smiled.

"Now?"

He looked at Emma.

"Now we raise her."

Hannah stared.

"Together?"

"If you want."

She smiled.

"I do."

Gabriel reached for her hand.

For once, he didn't care who saw.

The man who had ruled through fear had finally chosen something else.

Trust.

Months passed.

The investigation continued.

Victor Kane went to prison.

Vincent disappeared into witness protection.

The Harbor Saints collapsed.

Gabriel's organization changed.

He closed the businesses connected to smuggling.

He invested in legitimate companies.

He created a foundation in Lucia's name.

And the fourteenth-floor office changed too.

The room that had once been a place where men feared to speak became a nursery on one side.

Emma's toys appeared beside Gabriel's desk.

Her pink stuffed rabbit sat on the leather sofa.

Her tiny shoes were always somewhere they shouldn't be.

Gabriel pretended to hate it.

Everyone knew he didn't.

One afternoon, Hannah entered carrying Emma.

"Your niece has destroyed another document."

Gabriel looked up.

"What document?"

She held up a page covered in purple crayon.

Gabriel sighed.

"That was a contract worth six million dollars."

Hannah smiled.

"She has expensive taste."

Gabriel took Emma.

The baby grabbed his tie.

Again.

He looked at her.

"You're still doing this."

Emma laughed.

Hannah watched them.

"She loves you."

Gabriel looked at Emma.

"I love her too."

Hannah smiled.

It was quiet.

Natural.

No fear.

No lies.

No secrets.

Then Gabriel stood.

He walked toward Hannah.

"One more thing."

"What?"

He took a small box from his desk.

She opened it.

Inside was a ring.

Not a diamond.

Not something extravagant.

A simple gold band.

Hannah looked at him.

"Gabriel."

"I know this is sudden."

She laughed.

"Sudden?"

"I've been thinking about it for six months."

"That's not sudden."

"Good."

He took her hand.

"I don't want you working for me."

She blinked.

"Why?"

"Because I want you beside me."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Are you asking?"

"Yes."

She smiled.

"Then yes."

Emma squealed.

Gabriel looked down.

"Was that a yes from you too?"

The baby grabbed his tie.

He laughed.

"Fine."

Hannah leaned against him.

For the first time, Gabriel allowed himself to imagine a future.

Not one built around fear.

Not one built around power.

A home.

A child.

A woman who knew his worst side and stayed anyway.

He thought of Lucia.

He wished she could see them.

Then he looked at Emma.

"You saved me, little girl."

Hannah smiled.

"No."

May you like

Gabriel looked at her.

"You saved each other."
