Chapter 8 - The Decision That Changed Everything

One year after the baby crawled into Gabriel Marlowe's office, the fourteenth floor looked completely different.
The crystal chandelier still hung above the marble hallway.
The black doors were still guarded.
Gabriel still controlled enough business to make powerful men nervous.
But now there were colorful drawings taped beside the security monitors.
A stuffed rabbit sat on the reception desk.
And every morning at exactly 10:17, Emma crawled out of the nursery and headed toward Gabriel's office.
The staff had stopped trying to stop her.
Gabriel had stopped pretending he minded.
That morning, he opened his office door.
Emma was sitting outside.
One sock was missing.
Again.
Gabriel stared at her.
"You did that on purpose."
She smiled.
He picked her up.
"Come on."
She grabbed his tie.
"Of course."
Hannah appeared behind them.
"She was supposed to be napping."
Gabriel looked at Emma.
"She's a criminal."
Hannah laughed.
"She learned from the best."
Gabriel smiled.
The phone rang.
His expression changed slightly.
The old Gabriel returned for a moment.
Cold.
Controlled.
Dangerous.
He answered.
"Yes?"
Matteo's voice came through.
"We found the last person connected to Victor."
"Who?"
"A man named Daniel Cross."
Gabriel's eyes narrowed.
"Where?"
"New York."
"Bring him."
There was a pause.
"Boss, there's something else."
"What?"
"He asked for Hannah."
Gabriel looked toward her.
"Why?"
"He says he knows what happened to Daniel."
Hannah's face went pale.
Gabriel ended the call.
"What is it?" she asked.
"Someone knows about your brother."
Her expression changed.
"I thought that was over."
"So did I."
Gabriel handed Emma to Hannah.
"Stay here."
"No."
He looked at her.
"I want to come."
"You don't have to."
"I know."
She stepped closer.
"But I want to."
Gabriel smiled.
"Then come."
They went downstairs.
Daniel Cross was waiting in a secured room.
He was older.
Tired.
Afraid.
Gabriel entered.
"You asked for Hannah."
Daniel looked at her.
Then lowered his head.
"I'm sorry."
Hannah stared.
"Who are you?"
"I worked with your brother."
"What happened to him?"
Daniel swallowed.
"He didn't die."
Hannah froze.
"What?"
"He disappeared."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
Gabriel stepped forward.
"Then why say he didn't die?"
"Because I saw him."
"When?"
"Three months ago."
Gabriel's eyes narrowed.
"Where?"
"Canada."
Hannah covered her mouth.
Daniel continued.
"Daniel has been hiding."
"Why?"
"Because someone wants him dead."
Gabriel looked at Hannah.
"Who?"
Daniel looked toward Emma.
"The Marlowe family's enemies."
Gabriel went still.
"What does Daniel know?"
"Everything."
"What everything?"
Daniel whispered:
"The truth about Lucia."
Gabriel's heart stopped.
"What truth?"
Daniel looked at Emma.
"Lucia didn't die twenty years ago."
Silence.
Gabriel stared.
Hannah stepped closer.
"Then who did?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No one knows."
Gabriel's mind raced.
The entire foundation of his life had shifted again.
Lucia might be alive.
His sister.
The woman he had mourned for twenty years.
The woman whose daughter now slept in Hannah's arms.
Gabriel looked at Emma.
Then at Hannah.
He knew what he had to do.
"Find her."
Daniel nodded.
"I can give you an address."
Gabriel turned to Matteo.
"Get the jet ready."
Hannah looked at him.
"You're going?"
"We're going."
"All of us?"
Gabriel looked at Emma.
"All three."
Hannah smiled.
"Then let's go."
Three days later, they stood outside a small house in northern Canada.
Snow covered the ground.
Gabriel approached the door.
He stopped.
For the first time in twenty years, he was afraid.
Not of death.
Not of enemies.
Not of losing power.
He was afraid of hope.
Because hope could hurt more than fear.
Hannah touched his hand.
"You don't have to do this alone."
Gabriel looked at her.
Then knocked.
Nothing.
He knocked again.
The door opened.
An older woman stood there.
Silver hair.
Tired eyes.
But the same face he remembered from childhood.
Gabriel couldn't breathe.
"Lucia?"
The woman covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Gabriel."
He stood frozen.
Twenty years disappeared.
He was a boy again.
His sister was laughing.
Their mother was calling them downstairs.
Their father was still alive.
The world had not yet broken.
Then Lucia stepped forward.
Gabriel embraced her.
He held her so tightly she began crying.
"I thought you were dead."
"I had to disappear."
"Why?"
"Because they were going to kill you."
Gabriel closed his eyes.
"I spent twenty years hating you."
"I know."
"I thought you abandoned us."
"I never wanted to."
She pulled away.
"Is that my daughter?"
Gabriel looked toward Hannah.
Emma stared at Lucia.
Then reached toward her.
Lucia began crying again.
Hannah handed the baby over.
Lucia held her granddaughter.
Gabriel watched.
For years, he had believed the past was something that could never be repaired.
He had been wrong.
Some wounds did not disappear.
They became scars.
But scars meant survival.
That evening, the four of them sat together at a small wooden table.
Lucia told them everything.
She had disappeared because the Marlowe family was being targeted from within.
Daniel had protected Emma.
Hannah had protected Emma without knowing why.
Gabriel had protected both of them without understanding what they truly meant to him.
And now the truth was finally complete.
The baby who had crawled into Gabriel's office had not been a random interruption.
She had been the beginning of the life he had never known he wanted.
A family.
A home.
A future.
Months later, Gabriel returned to New York with Hannah, Emma, and Lucia.
The mansion became louder.
Messier.
Warmer.
Gabriel complained about toys in the hallway.
He complained about crayons on his desk.
He complained about Emma stealing his ties.
Nobody believed him anymore.
Because every evening, when he thought no one was watching, Gabriel sat on the floor and played with her.
One night, Hannah found him asleep on the nursery floor.
Emma was sleeping against his chest.
Hannah smiled.
"You know you're supposed to be terrifying."
Gabriel opened one eye.
"Don't tell anyone."
She laughed.
He reached for her hand.
"I used to think power was having everyone afraid of you."
"And now?"
He looked at Emma.
"Now I think power is having someone worth protecting."
Hannah sat beside him.
Emma moved slightly in her sleep.
Gabriel kissed the top of her head.
The most feared man in New York had once opened his office door and found a baby crawling toward him.
That tiny child had unknowingly placed a target on three lives.
But she had also done something far more important.
She had forced Gabriel Marlowe to choose.
He could have chosen fear.
He could have chosen revenge.
He could have chosen the old life that had made him powerful.
Instead, he chose Hannah.
He chose Emma.
He chose his sister.
He chose a family.
And for the first time in twenty years, Gabriel Marlowe discovered that the greatest thing a dangerous man could do was not destroy his enemies.
It was finally give the people he loved somewhere safe to come home to.
Emma opened her eyes.
She looked at him.
Then smiled.
Gabriel smiled back.
"Hello, little troublemaker."
She reached for his tie.
He sighed.
"Of course."
Hannah laughed.
Outside, Manhattan glittered beneath the night sky.
Inside, the once-feared mafia boss held his niece close.
And this time, he wasn't afraid of what she might take from him.
May you like
He was grateful for everything she had given him.
The End.
