Chapter 9 - The Legacy Restored

That evening, the sun set in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and deep purple over the Brooklyn waterfront.
My brownstone in Park Slope was warm, bright, and filled with the mouth-watering aroma of fresh roasted chicken, herbs, and warm apple pie.
In the spacious, sunlit living room, eighteen-month-old Clara was toddling happily across the plush rug, chasing baby Julian, who was now nearly two years old and running around in circles, his cheerful laughter ringing through the high-ceilinged house.
Rowan sat at the kitchen island, drinking a glass of red wine, laughing as she watched the two children play together. Desmond was near the dining table, reviewing court briefs for our upcoming morning trial, a relaxed smile on his face.
I walked out onto the rear garden deck, holding a warm cup of tea, feeling the cool autumn breeze rustling the leaves of the oak tree in the yard.
My phone chimed in my pocket. A short news alert popped up on my screen:
BLOOMBERG FINANCIAL: FORMER REAL ESTATE TYCOON ALERIC STERLING DENIED LIQUIDITY DISBURSEMENT FOLLOWING SECONDARY CIVIL JUDGMENT.
I looked at the notification for two seconds, felt neither anger nor pleasure, and quietly cleared the alert from my screen.
The Sterling name had once been a symbol of arrogant, untouchable power—a family that used human beings as disposable tools and built their fortune on secrecy, deceit, and emotional destruction.
Now, that name belonged to my daughter.

It belonged to a little girl who was being raised in a house filled with truth, laughter, intelligence, and unconditional love. It belonged to a law firm that protected vulnerable women and restored justice to those who had been silenced.
I placed my phone back in my pocket and stepped back inside the warm, bright house, closing the glass door behind me to keep the cold wind out.
