Chapter 4 - The Shadows of the Past

The nursery was quiet, save for the soft sound of a lullaby playing on the old record player Emma had brought into the house.

The triplets were fast asleep in their white wooden cribs, their small breathing synchronized and peaceful. Emma stood near the window, looking out into the rain-swept gardens below. Her arm still throbbed slightly where Marco had grabbed her, but her mind was entirely consumed by the look in Gabriel’s eyes when he had defended her.

It wasn't just protective rage. It was ownership.

The heavy oak door opened softly, and Gabriel stepped inside.

He had removed his tie, and the top two buttons of his shirt were open. His knuckles were slightly red, but his dark hair was back in place, his face an unreadable mask.

“Are they asleep?” he whispered, stepping up behind her near the window.

“Yes,” Emma whispered back. “They fell asleep right after their story.”

Gabriel stopped a few inches behind her. She could feel the intense heat radiating from his body, smelling the dark scent of tobacco and bourbon clinging to him.

“Marco will not return to this house,” Gabriel said quietly. “You don't need to fear him.”

“I wasn't afraid for myself,” Emma turned around to face him, her back pressed gently against the window sill. “I was afraid for the boys. And... for you.”

Gabriel looked down at her, his eyes searching her face in the soft golden light of the nursery nightlight. “For me?”

“You carry so much hate inside you, Gabriel,” she said softly, reaching out without thinking, her soft fingers gently touching his jawline. “It’s eating you alive.”

Gabriel closed his eyes for a fraction of a second at her touch. It had been so long since anyone had touched him without an agenda, without fear, without expectation. Her skin was warm, soft, and smelled of vanilla and rain.

“In my world, Emma, hate is a survival tool,” Gabriel murmured, opening his eyes to look down at her lips. “Love makes you soft. Love gets you killed. It got Isabella killed.”

Emma’s breath hitched. “What do you mean?”

Gabriel took her hand from his jaw, holding her soft fingers in his large, calloused palm. He led her out of the nursery and down the quiet corridor to his private bedroom suite—a place no staff member was ever permitted to enter.

He opened the double doors and led her inside.

The room was vast, minimalist, and dominated by a king-sized bed covered in charcoal linens. On the far wall hung a large, magnificent oil painting of a beautiful woman with dark hair and bright blue eyes—Isabella.

Gabriel walked over to a safe hidden behind a wood panel. He entered a combination, pulled out a velvet-lined box, and brought it over to the small sitting area near the fireplace.

He sat on the leather sofa and motioned for Emma to join him.

She sat beside him, her heart beating rapidly.

Gabriel opened the box. Inside lay a delicate silver necklace with a tear-shaped diamond pendant, alongside a sealed envelope with Emma’s name written across the front in elegant, feminine handwriting.

Emma stared at the envelope in disbelief. “My name?”

“Isabella died in a car explosion eleven months ago,” Gabriel said, his voice flat and void of emotion. “It wasn't an accident. It was a bomb meant for me. She was taking the boys to the park when the device detonated. She survived long enough to get the boys out of the car, but she... she didn't make it.”

Tears welled up in Emma’s eyes. She covered her mouth with her hand, horrified.

“Before she passed away at the hospital,” Gabriel continued, staring at the diamond necklace, “she gave this box to Frank. She told him to place it in my safe and give it to the woman who would eventually bring the rope out of the cellar.”

Emma’s breath caught in her throat. “She... she planned this?”

“Isabella knew her family,” Gabriel explained softly. “She knew Marco was plotting against us. She knew that if anything happened to her, I would shut down, isolate the boys, and turn this house into a war zone. She knew I needed someone who wasn't part of this darkness to save us.”

Gabriel handed the sealed envelope to Emma.

With trembling hands, Emma broke the wax seal and pulled out the handwritten letter inside.

Dear Emma,

If you are reading this, it means my Gabriel has finally allowed you into his heart, and my boys have found their laughter again. I do not know you, but I know the kind of woman you must be. You are brave enough to stand against my husband’s shadows, and soft enough to heal my children’s grief.

Do not be afraid of Gabriel’s world, Emma. He acts like a monster because he believes it is the only way to protect what he loves. Show him that he is allowed to be human again.

The necklace in this box belonged to my grandmother. It is yours now. Wear it, love my sons, and give Gabriel the life he deserves.

With endless gratitude,

Isabella Moretti

Tears spilled over Emma’s lashes, falling onto the crisp paper. She held the letter against her chest, overwhelmed by the profound love and tragic foresight of a mother who had loved her family enough to plan their healing from beyond the grave.

Gabriel reached out, his long fingers gently wiping the tears from Emma’s cheeks.

“Isabella gave me permission to move on eleven months ago,” Gabriel whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “But I didn't think I ever would... until I walked onto the lawn today and saw you.”

Emma looked up into his eyes, seeing the raw vulnerability buried beneath his iron exterior.

May you like

“Gabriel...” she breathed.

Gabriel didn't wait any longer. He cupped her cheek with his hand, leaned down, and pressed his lips to hers in a deep, desperate, and beautiful kiss that shattered the remaining shadows of the past.
