Chapter 5 - The Promise Kept

Six months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the Moretti estate, bathing the green lawns and blooming flowerbeds in golden light.

The front gates of the estate stood wide open—not because security was lax, but because the house was no longer a prison. It was a home.

In the center of the vast garden, a massive wooden playground had been constructed, complete with swings, slides, and a climbing wall. The sound of children’s laughter rang through the air, carrying across the manicured grounds.

Leo, Lucas, and Liam—now nearly three years old—were running through the sprinklers in their swim trunks, shrieking with delight as water sprayed into the air.

Near the garden bench sat Gabriel, wearing a simple white linen shirt and comfortable trousers. On his lap rested his laptop, but he hadn't typed a single word in twenty minutes. His eyes were entirely fixed on his family.

Beside him sat Emma, glowing in a light yellow sundress that accentuated her beautiful, curvy silhouette. Around her neck hung Isabella’s diamond pendant, catching the sunlight in dazzling silver flashes. Her hand rested comfortably in Gabriel’s, their fingers intertwined tightly.

Frank Vance walked up the terrace steps, carrying a tray of ice-cold lemonade. He no longer looked like a tense bodyguard waiting for an attack; he looked like a proud uncle enjoying a quiet afternoon.

“Here you go, Miss Emma,” Frank said, setting the glasses down on the small table. “The boys requested extra ice.”

“Thank you, Frank,” Emma smiled warmly.

“How are the Boston accounts, Gabriel?” Frank asked, turning to his boss.

“Marco’s entire faction was liquidated last week,” Gabriel replied calmly, taking a sip of his lemonade. “The syndicate is quiet. The business is clean. There are no threats left to deal with.”

Frank nodded, a look of profound respect in his eyes. “Then I believe my work here is done for the day.”

“Go home, Frank,” Gabriel smiled faintly. “Enjoy your weekend.”

After Frank walked away, Gabriel turned his full attention to Emma. He brought her hand to his lips, pressing a gentle kiss against her knuckles.

“You’re quiet today,” Gabriel noted softly.

Emma rested her head against his broad shoulder, watching the triplets chase a butterfly across the lawn.

“I was just thinking about Isabella,” Emma admitted softly. “About her promise.”

Gabriel wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her closer against his side. “Isabella was a wise woman. She knew me better than I knew myself. She knew that only a woman with a heart as big as yours could fix what was broken in this house.”

“We fixed it together, Gabriel,” Emma looked up at him, her hazel eyes bright with love.

Gabriel leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers.

“Daddy! Emma! Come play!” Leo’s voice shouted from the lawn.

Lucas was holding the thick hemp rope—the same rope that had started it all—and waving it wildly in the air. Liam was already running toward them with open arms.

Gabriel looked down at his sons, then looked at the beautiful woman beside him. The shadows of grief, fear, and hostility that had ruled his life for years had vanished completely, replaced by the brilliant, undeniable light of a real family.

Gabriel stood up, taking Emma’s hand and pulling her up with him.

“Come on, Miss Brooks,” Gabriel smiled—a full, brilliant, genuine smile that reached his dark eyes. “Let's go show our sons who really owns this rope.”

Emma laughed—a bright, breathless sound that carried through the warm summer air—and together, they walked down the terrace steps into the sun, fulfilling a dead wife’s final promise, and beginning a lifetime of love.
