Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Hale Family

The next morning, Pine Hollow woke beneath a blanket of snow.
The world outside looked peaceful.
Perfect.
Almost beautiful.
But inside the Whitmore guest residence, nobody felt peace.
Samantha sat near the fireplace with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders.
Her hand rested on her belly.
The baby was moving.
A tiny reminder that life continued even when everything else fell apart.
Across the room, Edward Whitmore stood with his security team.
Not as a billionaire.
Not as a businessman.
As a father.
And fathers did not sleep when their daughters were hurt.
“Tell me everything,” Edward said.
Daniel placed the folder on the table.
“We traced the payments.”
Edward opened it.
“Leah Vance.”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Over two million dollars.”
Samantha looked up.
Two million.
Her stomach tightened.
“For what?”
Daniel looked at her.
“That’s what we’re trying to find out.”
Edward continued reading.
“Fake consulting contracts. Offshore accounts.”
He turned a page.
Then stopped.
His expression changed.
Samantha noticed.
“Dad?”
Edward closed the folder.
Too quickly.
She knew him.
She had grown up watching him.
Edward Whitmore was a man who never hid emotions.
Except when something scared him.
“What is it?”
“Nothing.”
Samantha stared.
“Dad.”
Silence.
Edward looked at her.
And she saw it.
The hesitation.
That scared her more.
“Tell me.”
He sat down.
Slowly.
“There is another name.”
“Whose?”
Edward didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“Victor Blackwood.”
Samantha frowned.
The name meant nothing to her.
But Edward reacted.
Because he knew.
“Who is he?”
Edward looked toward the window.
Snow fell outside.
“Someone I thought was gone.”
Thirty years earlier.
Before Whitmore Global Security became a world-famous company.
Before Edward had money.
Before the private jets and skyscrapers.
There were two young men.
Edward Whitmore.
And Victor Blackwood.
They were friends.
Partners.
Brothers in everything except blood.
Edward was the strategist.
Victor was the operator.
Edward built plans.
Victor executed them.
Together, they created the foundation of what would become one of the most powerful security organizations in the world.
Until Edward discovered something.
Victor wasn’t protecting people.
He was using them.
“We don’t control lives,” Edward had told him.
They stood in an empty warehouse.
“You’re wrong.”
Victor smiled.
“That’s exactly how you lose.”
Edward remembered those words.
Every day.
“You think morality wins?”
Victor stepped closer.
“No.”
A pause.
“Power wins.”
That was the last day they worked together.
Edward exposed him.
Destroyed his network.
Sent evidence to authorities.
Victor disappeared.
Everyone believed he was dead.
Including Edward.
Until now.
Present day.
Samantha looked at her father.
“You think he’s behind this?”
Edward didn’t answer.
Because the answer was obvious.
Daniel continued.
“The payments to Leah began six months ago.”
Six months.
The same time Donovan’s behavior changed.
The same time Samantha became isolated.
The same time she started doubting herself.
Her chest tightened.
“So this wasn’t random.”
“No,” Edward said.
“It wasn’t.”
Samantha looked down.
“Why me?”
The room became quiet.
Edward immediately regretted everything.
Because she was asking the question every victim asked.
Why did this happen to me?
He moved closer.
“Samantha.”
She looked at him.
“You did nothing wrong.”
Her eyes filled.
“I know.”
A pause.
“But someone wanted me to believe I did.”
That sentence hurt Edward more than anger.
Because he knew.
Emotional damage left deeper wounds than physical ones.
Meanwhile, across town…
Donovan Hale sat alone in his office.
The same office where he had made decisions worth millions.
Today, he couldn’t focus.
Every screen showed the same thing.
News articles.
Rumors.
Whitmore security arriving.
Investigation.
Scandal.
His company’s stock had already started falling.
His investors were calling.
His lawyers were calling.
Everyone wanted answers.
But Donovan had none.
A knock came.
He looked up.
“Come in.”
Leah entered.
Different from yesterday.
No confidence.
No smile.
Fear.
“You need to leave.”
Donovan stared.
“What?”
“This is over.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“Over?”
She laughed quietly.
“You think you can just throw me away?”
Donovan stood.
“You lied to me.”
She stepped closer.
“I protected you.”
“You manipulated me.”
“Did I?”
Her voice became sharp.
“Did I make you hate your wife?”
Silence.
That hurt.
Because she knew.
“You already wanted to.”
Donovan looked away.
“No.”
“Yes.”
She stepped closer.
“You told me she embarrassed you.”
“You told me she wasn’t ambitious enough.”
“You told me she made you feel trapped.”
Every word hit.
Because they were his words.
His thoughts.
His weakness.
Leah lowered her voice.
“I just helped you become honest.”
Donovan’s face hardened.
“Who hired you?”
She smiled.
Finally.
The truth.
“You’re asking the wrong question.”
“Who?”
She picked up her bag.
“Ask who wanted Samantha away from you.”
She walked to the door.
Then stopped.
“Oh, Donovan?”
He looked at her.
“You should worry less about Edward Whitmore…”
A pause.
“And more about your own father.”
Donovan froze.
“My father?”
Leah left.
Ten minutes later, Donovan received an email.
No sender.
One attachment.
A photograph.
His father.
Richard Hale.
A man who had died eight years ago.
Standing beside Victor Blackwood.
Alive.
Donovan stared.
Impossible.
Then another image loaded.
A recent one.
Taken last month.
Richard Hale.
Alive.
Older.
Watching.
The same man everyone thought was buried.
Donovan’s hands began shaking.
Because suddenly…
The entire story changed.
That evening, Samantha received a call.
Private number.
She almost ignored it.
But something made her answer.
“Hello?”
A man’s voice.
Old.
Calm.
Familiar.
She had never heard it before.
But something about it felt wrong.
“Samantha Whitmore.”
She froze.
“Yes?”
“You don’t know me.”
Her grip tightened.
“Who are you?”
A pause.
Then:
“Your husband’s grandfather.”
Her heart stopped.
“Richard Hale died.”
A quiet laugh.
“People with power rarely disappear when they’re supposed to.”
Samantha stood.
“Where is Donovan?”
“He’s about to learn the truth.”
Her voice shook.
“What truth?”
The man answered:
“That his entire life was built on a lie.”
The call ended.
Immediately.
Samantha stood there.
Frozen.
Then she realized something.
The baby kicked.
Hard.
As if warning her.
Something bigger was coming.
Something that had nothing to do with a cruel husband.
And everything to do with two powerful families at war.
At the same moment, Edward’s security system detected movement outside.
Daniel entered quickly.
“Sir.”
Edward turned.
“What happened?”
“We found something.”
“What?”
Daniel handed him a photograph.
Edward looked.
And his face went completely cold.
Because the person standing outside the Whitmore residence was someone he knew.
Someone who should have been dead.
Someone connected to every secret.
Victor Blackwood.
And he had come alone.
Not to attack.
To surrender.

The only question was…
Why?
