Chapter 8: The Daughter Who Was Framed

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The tablet remained in Edward Whitmore’s hand.

The screen displayed the same thing again and again.

AUTHORIZED ACCESS: SAMANTHA WHITMORE HALE

A name.

A code.

A betrayal.

At least, that was what it looked like.

Samantha stared at the screen as if it belonged to someone else.

“No.”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“No, that’s impossible.”

Richard Hale watched her carefully.

Not with anger.

Not with surprise.

With satisfaction.

Because this was the moment he had been waiting for.

The moment everyone turned against each other.

The moment trust collapsed.

Edward looked at his daughter.

“Samantha…”

The uncertainty in his voice hurt more than anger would have.

She looked at him.

“Dad.”

A pause.

“You believe I did this?”

Edward immediately shook his head.

“No.”

But his hesitation had already said enough.

And Samantha saw it.

She saw the tiny doubt.

The tiny crack.

The same crack that had appeared in Donovan.

The same crack that allowed other people to control him.

“No,” she repeated.

But this time, she was talking to herself.

“I didn’t do this.”

Richard smiled.

“Of course you didn’t.”

Everyone looked at him.

His calmness was terrifying.

“Then why are you smiling?” Edward demanded.

Richard turned toward him.

“Because you still don’t understand the game.”

A pause.

“The best lies are not the ones people believe.”

He looked at Samantha.

“The best lies are the ones that make good people question themselves.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Sir, the access log is clear.”

Edward looked at him.

“Explain.”

“The system shows Samantha’s biometric signature opened the gates.”

Samantha shook her head.

“I never touched the security system.”

Daniel continued.

“Her fingerprint authorization.”

Her face went pale.

“But my fingerprint is only registered for emergency medical access.”

Edward frowned.

“Medical access?”

Samantha nodded slowly.

“My father added it years ago.”

Daniel looked at the tablet.

“That’s what makes this strange.”

Edward looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel hesitated.

“The system didn’t just recognize her fingerprint.”

A pause.

“It used her old authorization.”

Edward’s expression changed.

“Old?”

“Yes.”

A silence.

“Samantha’s access profile was created ten years ago.”

Everyone looked at her.

Ten years.

Before she married Donovan.

Before she met most of these people.

Before anyone knew she would be part of this.

Richard smiled.

“Exactly.”

Edward turned toward him.

“What did you do?”

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, Victor spoke.

“Someone copied her identity.”

The room went still.

Everyone looked at Victor.

He continued:

“Richard has done this before.”

Edward’s eyes narrowed.

“Explain.”

Victor looked at Samantha.

“He doesn’t break systems.”

A pause.

“He replaces them.”

Samantha sat down.

Her legs suddenly felt weak.

Everything was moving too fast.

Her husband.

Her family.

Her father’s enemy.

Her entire life.

All connected.

“Why me?”

The question came out broken.

Edward immediately moved toward her.

“Samantha.”

She looked up.

“Why does everyone keep choosing me?”

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

Then Victor said:

“Because you were invisible.”

Everyone looked at him.

He continued.

“You weren’t the CEO.”

“You weren’t the billionaire.”

“You weren’t the security expert.”

“You were just Samantha.”

A pause.

“And Richard knew something.”

Richard’s expression darkened.

Victor continued:

“The person everyone underestimates is the easiest person to hide behind.”

Samantha understood.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

She had spent her entire life avoiding her father’s shadow.

Trying to be normal.

Trying to be loved.

And Richard had used exactly that.

Donovan stepped forward.

“I believe her.”

Everyone turned.

Samantha looked at him.

He looked at her.

For once…

There was no pride.

No arrogance.

Just honesty.

“You think I’m lying?”

Samantha didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t know what to feel.

Donovan looked at Edward.

“She didn’t do it.”

Edward studied him.

“And why should I believe you?”

Because the question was fair.

Donovan lowered his head.

“Because I know what manipulation looks like.”

A pause.

“I lived with it.”

Richard laughed.

“You are still blaming others.”

Donovan turned.

“No.”

His voice was stronger.

“For years, I blamed everyone except myself.”

A pause.

“But that doesn’t mean you didn’t destroy me.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

Suddenly, one of the security monitors flickered.

A new file appeared.

A video.

Daniel looked confused.

“Sir, we didn’t activate this.”

Edward nodded.

“Play it.”

The screen turned on.

A woman appeared.

Older.

Tired.

Terrified.

Samantha didn’t recognize her.

But Edward did.

His face changed.

“No…”

The woman looked directly at the camera.

“If you’re watching this…”

She took a shaky breath.

“Then Richard found a way back.”

Samantha looked at her father.

“Who is she?”

Edward couldn’t answer.

Because the answer was painful.

“My sister.”

Silence.

Edward’s sister.

A person Samantha had never heard about.

The woman continued:

“Edward, I’m sorry.”

Her eyes filled.

“I should have told you the truth.”

The video paused briefly.

Then continued.

“Richard Hale didn’t disappear.”

“He didn’t die.”

“He built something.”

The woman looked afraid.

“Something bigger than both of you.”

Richard stepped toward the screen.

“Turn it off.”

For the first time…

He sounded nervous.

Edward noticed.

And so did everyone else.

“No.”

Edward stared at him.

“Let her speak.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

The video continued.

“Richard created a network of people.”

“People inside companies.”

“Governments.”

“Security organizations.”

Samantha whispered:

“A network.”

Victor nodded.

“Yes.”

The woman continued:

“They don’t serve money.”

“They serve control.”

A pause.

“And Richard was never the leader.”

Everyone froze.

Richard’s expression changed.

“What?”

The video continued.

“He was working for someone else.”

Silence.

Even Richard looked shocked.

The woman whispered:

“Someone who has been watching Edward for decades.”

The screen glitched.

Then one final sentence appeared.

HE IS ALREADY INSIDE THE HOUSE.

The lights went out.

Darkness.

Complete darkness.

Samantha gasped.

Edward immediately moved toward her.

“Stay behind me.”

A sound echoed.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Controlled.

Someone was walking through the room.

Daniel raised his weapon.

“Identify yourself!”

No answer.

Another step.

Then another.

Donovan grabbed a nearby object.

Victor looked toward the hallway.

His face changed.

“No…”

Edward noticed.

“What?”

Victor whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

The figure entered the emergency lighting.

Everyone froze.

Because the person standing there was someone they all knew.

Someone who had been helping them.

Someone they trusted.

Daniel Brooks.

Edward’s security chief.

Standing with a weapon.

Pointed at Edward.

The room went silent.

Edward stared.

“Daniel?”

Daniel looked at him.

And his expression was full of regret.

“I’m sorry, sir.”

Samantha felt cold.

“Why?”

Daniel looked at Richard.

Then back at Edward.

“Because I never worked for you.”

A pause.

“I worked for him.”

Richard smiled.

The entire room understood.

The real enemy had never been outside.

May you like

He had been standing beside them.

The whole time.
