Chapter 1 - The Coldest Night in New York

My name is Emma Harrington, and just three days ago, I was the happiest woman in New York, holding my newborn daughter, Lily, in the comfort of a private maternity suite. Tonight, I’m fighting for our lives in the middle of a subzero blizzard, betrayed by the man I once vowed to love forever.

It all began when my phone buzzed on the bedside table in my hospital room. An Instagram notification shattered my world. A photo showed my husband, Carter Sterling, passionately kissing his Ivy League-educated ex-girlfriend, Chloe Vance. The caption read: “Soon, everything will be ours.”

Before I could even wipe away my tears, the heavy wooden door to my room burst open. It wasn't a nurse. It was Carter, accompanied by his tyrannical mother, Victoria, and two large men dressed in dark suits. There was no love left in Carter's eyes—only a cold, calculated cruelty that sent a chill through my body.

Victoria wasted no time. She threw a thick stack of legal documents onto my lap, her perfectly manicured fingers digging painfully into my skin.

“Sign them, Emma,” she hissed venomously. “You’re giving up your parental rights, your marriage, and any claim to the Sterling family fortune. To us, you’re nothing more than a penniless surrogate.”

I clutched Lily tighter against my chest, my voice trembling but defiant. “No! I’ll never sign anything! Get out!”

Carter didn’t hesitate. He stepped forward, rage twisting his face, and violently snatched the papers from my hands while one of the bodyguards grabbed my arms, pinning me helplessly to the hospital bed. They didn’t just want a divorce. They wanted to erase me from existence. Victoria produced forged medical records declaring me mentally unstable and legally incompetent. When I screamed for help, someone pressed a cloth soaked with a bitter chemical over my mouth, smothering every desperate cry until the world faded into darkness.

Hours later, the nightmare became even worse. Terrified of a public scandal if hospital staff found out, they secretly wheeled Lily and me through a service elevator before forcing us into the back of an unmarked black van. For thirty agonizing minutes, we drove through the darkness as one of New York’s worst winter storms raged outside.

Then the doors flew open. Carter grabbed me by the hair and brutally dragged me out, throwing both me and my trembling newborn into a deep snowbank along a deserted road in upstate New York.

“Die here, Emma,” he growled before slamming the doors shut.

The van disappeared into the blizzard, leaving us alone in complete darkness as icy winds howled around us. Hypothermia set in quickly. I could no longer feel my fingers. I pulled Lily beneath my thin hospital gown, pressing my body over hers to shield her from the biting frost. Lily’s cries grew weaker with every passing second, fading into faint whimpers against my chest.

Just as my vision began to fade into eternal night, two blinding headlights pierced through the swirling snow, racing toward what I believed would be our frozen grave. A massive armored SUV screeched to a halt beside the snowbank. Heavy footsteps crunched against the ice.

“Ma’am! Stay with us!” a deep, commanding voice called out through the roaring wind.

A towering man wrapped in a dark cashmere coat rushed to my side. Beside him was an elderly gentleman with silver hair and eyes that blazed with an terrifying, ancient authority. The moment the old man looked down at my shivering face, his stoic expression crumbled into utter shock and anguish.

“My God...” the older man rasped, his voice trembling as tears welled in his eyes. “Emma... my grand-daughter... I finally found you.”

He was Alexander Vance—the legendary shipping tycoon, multi-billionaire recluse, and the sole owner of the Vance Global Conglomerate. He was a man whose wealth could buy nations and whose influence made politicians tremble. Years ago, my late mother had severed ties with her ultra-wealthy family due to a bitter rift, leaving me to grow up in modest obscurity, entirely unaware that the most powerful man in North America was my biological grandfather.

Alexander took off his sable coat, wrapping it around Lily and me, lifting us into the heated interior of the vehicle.

“Get the medical team on board immediately!” Alexander roared to his driver. “If anything happens to my grand-daughter or my great-granddaughter, I will level this entire state!”

As the heated seats warmed my frozen skin and oxygen hit my lungs, my consciousness began to return. Alexander held my hand tightly, his eyes burning with a dark, ruthless fire.

“Who did this to you, my darling?” he whispered.

I swallowed through the searing pain in my throat, my tear-stained eyes fixing on his. “Carter Sterling... and his family.”

Alexander’s grip tightened. “The Sterlings are seeking a billion-dollar line of credit from my bank tomorrow morning. They think they are ascending to the top of society.” He leaned in, brushing a soft lock of wet hair from my forehead. “Tomorrow, my child, you will not die in the snow. Tomorrow, you will take everything they own.”
