Chapter 2 - The Rebirth of Emma Vance

The private medical suite at the Vance Estate in East Hampton looked like a five-star hotel merged with a state-of-the-art trauma center. Within twelve hours, top pediatric specialists had stabilized baby Lily, declaring her completely healthy despite her exposure to the cold. My frostbite was treated with advanced therapy, leaving no scars on my hands or face.

When I sat up in the velvet-upholstered bed the following evening, Alexander was waiting for me, accompanied by a team of three elite corporate attorneys and a former intelligence operative named Frank.

“You’ve been through hell, Emma,” Alexander said gently, setting a steaming cup of tea beside me. “The Sterlings treated you like dirt because they assumed you were an orphan with no family, no backing, and no power. They married you thinking you were a meek, disposable girl they could frame and discard once they secured the Sterling Corp’s restructuring.”

“They forced my hand onto a forged surrender contract,” I said, my voice hardening as the warmth returned to my veins. “They drafted forged psychiatric records to claim I was unfit to mother Lily.”

Frank, the operative, stepped forward and tapped a tablet screen. “We intercepted the hospital records, Ms. Vance. Victoria Sterling paid Dr. Robert Miller three hundred thousand dollars to sign off on those fake mental health forms. The surveillance footage from the hospital service elevator has already been wiped by Sterling security—or so they thought. My team recovered every single frame.”

I looked at the screen. The footage clearly showed Carter dragging me through the service corridor while Victoria carried the forged papers.

“What do you want to do, Emma?” Alexander asked, his amber eyes fixed on me with absolute faith. “I can destroy Sterling Enterprises by sunset today. One phone call to their creditors, one directive to the Securities and Exchange Commission, and Carter Sterling will be bankrupt by nightfall.”

“No,” I replied, stepping out of bed. My legs were steady now, fueled by a searing fire that had burned away every trace of the naive girl who had loved Carter Sterling. “A quick bankruptcy is too merciful, Grandfather. They wanted to humiliate me. They wanted to drag me through the dirt and leave me for dead in the dark. I want to take their empire away from them piece by piece—right in front of the people whose respect they crave.”

Alexander’s lips curled into a ruthless, proud smile. “That’s my blood speaking.”

Over the next forty-eight hours, the transformation was total.

I discarded the faded clothes of my past life. Alexander’s personal stylists spent hours fitting me in bespoke silk gowns, diamonds worth millions, and custom tailoring designed for corporate warfare. But more than the clothes, my entire presence changed. The quiet, self-effacing girl who had cooked Carter’s meals and tolerated Victoria’s passive-aggressive insults was dead. In her place stood Emma Vance, sole heiress to the Vance Global fortune.

Meanwhile, Carter and Victoria were celebrating.

Frank’s intercepted audio feeds revealed that Carter had informed his board that I had “abandoned” the family after a post-partum mental breakdown, signing over full custody of Lily to him. To solidify their status, the Sterlings were hosting the annual New York Winter Gala at the St. Regis Hotel—a gathering of the city’s elite where they intended to announce a major merger with the Vance Conglomerate’s financial branch.

They had no idea that the representative sent by Vance Global to finalize the deal was not Alexander Vance.

It was me.

On the night of the gala, the snow was still falling gently over Manhattan. Inside the grand ballroom of the St. Regis, crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over hundreds of wealthy investors, politicians, and socialites. Carter stood near the center stage, wearing a tailored tuxedo, sipping champagne alongside Chloe Vance—his mistress, who ironically shared my grandfather's last name through a distant, fallen branch of the family.

Victoria Sterling was hold court near the press wall, boasting to reporters about her son’s business acumen and their family’s close relationship with Vance Global.

“The Sterlings have always stood for integrity, family values, and immense growth,” Victoria proclaimed to a wall of flashing cameras. “Tonight marks the beginning of our partnership with the Vance empire—a partnership that will elevate Sterling Enterprises into a multi-billion-dollar powerhouse.”

“And what about your daughter-in-law, Mrs. Sterling?” a reporter asked. “There are rumors she checked out of the hospital unexpectedly.”

Victoria’s face assumed a mask of tragic sorrow. “Tragically, poor Emma suffered a severe psychological collapse after birth. She relinquished her rights and vanished. We are praying for her recovery, but Carter and little Lily must move forward.”

Right on cue, Carter raised his glass to the crowd. “To new beginnings, and to the Vance fortune that backs us!”

At that exact moment, the grand wooden doors of the ballroom slammed open.
