Chapter 3 - The King’s Fortress

A fleet of five black armored SUVs waited outside the Grand Regent Hotel, their engines idling in the crisp night air. Forty private security officers formed a human wall between the hotel entrance and the street, blocking dozens of flashing news cameras and reporters who had gathered after hearing rumors of a lockdown.

Elian stepped out into the night, keeping Ava’s head completely covered beneath his jacket to shield her from the flashing lights.

He slid into the plush leather back seat of the primary armored vehicle. The thick bulletproof glass doors clicked shut, instantly cutting off all sound from the outside world.

The interior of the SUV was warm and silent. Elian lowered Ava gently onto his lap, pulling back the jacket so he could see her face properly.

In the soft amber lighting of the vehicle, she looked so small, so bruised, so impossibly fragile. Dark circles sat under her wide brown eyes, and her skin was pale from years of poor nutrition. Yet, her features were an exact, unmistakable mirror of her late mother, Sophia—the same delicate nose, the same soft curve of her chin, the same gentle spirit.

Sophia had died protecting infant Ava during the chaotic ambush in Paris three years ago. For thirty-six agonizing months, Elian had scoured the globe, spending hundreds of millions of dollars, tearing apart criminal syndicates, and turning his heart into an fortress of ice because he believed he had failed them both.

Now, his miracle was sitting on his knees.

Ava looked around the luxurious interior of the vehicle, her tiny hands touching the soft leather seats with wide-eyed wonder.

"Is... is this your car, Daddy?" she asked softly.

"It's our car, little bird," Elian corrected gently, reaching for a soft wool blanket resting on the side console. He wrapped it carefully around her shoulders, rubbing her small arms to bring back the heat. "Everything I have belongs to you."

Ava looked down at her hands, her tiny fingers tracing the silver bracelet on her wrist. "Claudia said... she said my real papa died in a fire. She said nobody wanted me."

A sharp, violent pain stabbed through Elian's chest. He pulled her close, resting his chin against the top of her head, tears burning behind his eyes once more.

"She lied to you, Ava," Elian whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I searched for you every single second of every single day. I looked across oceans. I never stopped looking for my little girl. You are the most loved child in the whole world."

Ava looked up into his grey eyes, searching his face with childish innocence. She reached out one tiny, scarred hand and gently touched his cheek, wiping away a stray tear with her thumb.

"Don't cry, Papa," she murmured softly. "I'm not in the attic anymore."

Those six simple words broke whatever remaining walls Elian had built around his heart. He kissed her tiny knuckles, holding her small hand against his cheek.

The convoy drove smoothly through the city streets, arriving ten minutes later at the gates of the Vale Estate—a vast, ninety-acre private compound sitting on the cliffs of the Hudson River. Surrounded by fifteen-foot security walls, motion sensors, and elite guards, it was an impenetrable fortress built to protect the royal family of technology.

The heavy iron gates swung open, and the SUV pulled up the winding stone driveway, stopping before a massive, sprawling French chateau lit by warm golden lanterns.

The vehicle door was opened by Dr. Evelyn Reed—the chief medical officer of Vale Global and a long-time family friend—who was standing on the front steps with a team of pediatric nurses.

"Elian," Dr. Reed said, her voice filled with deep relief and concern as she looked at the child in his arms. "We have the medical suite fully prepared."

"She needs a gentle checkup, Evelyn," Elian said, stepping out of the vehicle and walking straight into the warm grand foyer. "And a warm bath. Immediately."

"Right away, sir."

They walked up the grand curved staircase to the master wing of the estate. Elian carried Ava into a massive, beautiful bedroom that had been kept locked and preserved in perfect condition for three years—a nursery decorated in soft cream and lavender tones, filled with plush toys, hand-painted murals of starlit skies, and a soft, oversized bed.

Ava gasped as Elian set her gently down on the edge of the soft mattress. She stared at the giant stuffed bears, the glowing nightlights shaped like little stars, and the soft Persian rug beneath her bare feet.

"Is this... a dream?" she whispered, clutching the wool blanket around her chest.

Elian knelt before her, taking her small hands into his. "No, my darling. This is your home. This is your room. And tomorrow, we will fill it with every toy, every book, and every dress you could ever want."

Two gentle pediatric nurses prepared a deep marble bathtub in the adjoining bathroom, filling it with warm water and soft lavender bubbles. Elian stayed right beside her, sitting on the floor by the tub, holding her hand while the nurses carefully washed away the dirty water, the grime, and the pain of her past.

When they dried her off and dressed her in a pair of ultra-soft silk pajamas, Ava looked like a small princess once more.

Dr. Reed performed a quiet, thorough medical examination, checking her heart, her lungs, and her small bruises, writing down notes with a stern, focused face.

"She is malnourished, Elian," Dr. Reed reported softly outside the bedroom door a few minutes later, keeping her voice low. "Her growth has been slowed by poor nutrition, and she has minor bruising on her arms consistent with rough handling. But she is resilient. Her heart is strong. With proper care, love, and time, she will recover completely."

Elian looked through the cracked doorway at his daughter, who was sitting in the middle of the large bed, happily hugging a giant plush velvet bunny.

"She won't just recover, Evelyn," Elian said, his voice cold and resolute. "I will give her the entire world."
