Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The rain in Chicago had turned into a torrential downpour by six o'clock that evening.

Inside the top-floor executive suite of Vance Dynamics, Silas Vance stood before a floor-to-ceiling glass window, swirling a glass of twenty-year-old scotch. He was a handsome man of thirty-five, with slicked-back hair, a tailored Italian suit, and the smooth, practiced charm of a man who had never faced a real consequence in his life.

The door to his office swung open, and Odalys Crane stepped inside, tossing her leather coat onto a leather sofa. She looked slightly flushed, but a triumphant smile played on her red lips.

"Is it done?" Silas asked, turning around, his tone cool and transactional.

"It’s as good as done," Odalys replied, walking over to the bar and pouring herself a drink. "She refused to sign, of course. She tried to get brave. She brought up Kade Capital."

Silas froze, his glass stopping halfway to his mouth. "She knows about Kade?"

"She claims she left a backdoor in the Neural-Sync algorithm," Odalys shrugged dismissively. "It doesn't matter. I handled it. I dragged her, made a scene, and made sure the hospital staff saw her completely unhinged. By tomorrow morning, the medical board will declare her temporarily incompetent due to severe prenatal psychiatric distress. The power of attorney will automatically revert to you."

Silas relaxed, taking a slow sip of his scotch. "And the baby?"

"The doctors will perform an emergency C-section if her vitals keep spiking," Odalys said coldly. "Once the child is out, she’ll be transferred to a private psychiatric facility in upstate New York. You get full custody of the child, complete control of her remaining patent rights, and total freedom to finalize the public offering."

Silas smiled, walking over and wrapping an arm around Odalys's waist. "You're ruthless, Odalys. That's why I love you."

"Someone had to be," she purred, leaning into his touch. "Your little garage-bred wife was getting in the way of a twelve-billion-dollar valuation. Did you know she actually tried to threaten me with her father?"

Silas burst into a loud, genuine laugh. "Marcus? The mechanic from Detroit?"

"The very same," Odalys chuckled. "She literally looked me in the eye and said her father knew enough to make us nervous. I almost felt sorry for her. The old fool probably doesn't even know how to use a laptop."

Before Silas could respond, his sleek desktop terminal let out a sharp, piercing chime.

He frowned, walking over to his desk. "What is that?"

"Probably the draft press release from PR," Odalys said, sipping her drink.

Silas looked down at the monitor. The screen wasn't showing his normal corporate desktop. It was flashing bright red, displaying a single, terrifying notification from his primary wealth management firm:

[CRITICAL ALERT: ALL KADE CAPITAL ACCOUNTS FROZEN BY FEDERAL/INTERNATIONAL ORDER. REASON: SANCTIONS OVERRIDE - CODE 99]

Silas’s face lost all color. "What... what the hell is this?"

"What's wrong?" Odalys asked, walking over to him.

"Kade Capital," Silas stammered, his fingers frantically flying over his keyboard. "The offshore accounts... they're gone. Locked out. All forty-eight million dollars!"

"That's impossible!" Odalys snapped, her tone suddenly sharp. "Those accounts are routed through six layers of nominee corporations in Switzerland and Panama! No court in the United States can freeze them without a six-month discovery process!"

Silas clicked another link, but his screen suddenly went entirely black. Then, a bold, white text appeared line by line:

[VANCE DYNAMICS CREDIT LINES: REVOKED] [PERSONAL ACCOUNTS (SILAS VANCE): LIQUIDATED] [CORPORATE IPO STATUS: SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY]

"No, no, no!" Silas shrieked, slamming his fist onto the mahogany desk. "Call the bank! Call our chief legal officer! Call them right now!"

Odalys pulled out her encrypted personal phone, her hands trembling slightly for the first time. She dialed her primary contact at the clearing house in New York.

The call didn't even ring. A automated, cold metallic voice immediately answered: “The number you have dialed has been decommissioned under National Security Directive 14. This line is being monitored.”

Odalys dropped the phone onto the rug. She stared at Silas, her chest heaving. "Silas... what is happening?"

Before Silas could answer, the floor beneath their feet seemed to vibrate with a low, thunderous rumble.

Outside the glass windows of the executive suite, through the heavy rain, three massive, black, unmarked Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters broke through the low clouds. They hovered directly over the Vance Dynamics tower, their massive searchlights cutting through the dark sky, pinning Silas and Odalys in a blinding, white glare.

"What is that?!" Silas screamed, backing away from the windows in sheer terror. "Is that the FBI?!"

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the executive suite were blasted inward with a deafening CRACK.

Smoke filled the room instantly. Through the haze, six men dressed in full tactical gear, wearing black combat uniforms with no flag patches or identification numbers, moved into the office with terrifying, silent precision. They didn't yell commands. They didn't scream "Police!"

Within four seconds, the tactical team had swept the room. One operator slammed Silas face-down onto his polished glass desk, twisting his arm behind his back until his shoulder popped violently.

"Aaagh! Stop! Do you know who I am?!" Silas shrieked, tears of pain bursting from his eyes. "I am Silas Vance! I own this building!"

The operator didn't answer. He simply shoved a heavy knee into the small of Silas’s back, pinning him like an insect to the glass.

Odalys backed into the corner, raising her hands, her voice high and panicked. "This is an illegal raid! Who authorized this?! Who do you work for?!"

The lead tactical operator stepped forward. He reached into his tactical vest, pulled out a satellite radio unit, and placed it on the desk right in front of Silas’s bloodied face.

He pressed a single button.

A harsh static hum filled the silent, ruined office.

Then, a voice came through the speaker. It was low, quiet, and carried a thick, gravelly resonance.

"Hello, Silas."

Silas gasped for air, his cheek pressed flat against his own desk. "Who... who is this?!"

"You told my daughter I was just a mechanic," the voice said softly over the radio. "You told her I was old. You told her I was nothing."

Silas’s eyes dilated in sheer, unadulterated horror. The voice was familiar. He had heard it once, three years ago, at a small backyard barbecue in Detroit. It was the old man who had worn a stained blue shirt and offered to change the oil on Silas’s sports car.

"Marcus...?" Silas whispered, his voice cracking in disbelief. "Marcus Osei...?"

"You took my daughter’s hard work," Marcus’s voice continued, chillingly calm. "You tried to steal her child. And your pathetic friend put her hands on my blood."

"Marcus! Listen to me!" Silas wept, panic completely consuming him. "It was Odalys! It was all Odalys! She went to the hospital on her own! I didn't tell her to hurt Clara! I swear to God, I didn't know!"

In the corner, Odalys gasped, her face turning deathly pale. "Silas, you bastard!"

"Save your breath, Silas," Marcus said over the radio. "I am currently twenty minutes away from Chicago. When I land, I am coming to the hospital. If my daughter or my granddaughter suffers a single permanent injury..."

Marcus paused. The static on the line seemed to sharpen.

"...I will make sure Vance Dynamics, your name, and your bloodline cease to exist on this Earth. Do you understand me?"

"Marcus, please!" Silas sobbed into the desk. "Please, don't do this!"

The radio went dead.

The lead tactical operator turned off the device, picked it up, and looked down at the two terrified executives.

"Drag them to the transport," the operator ordered flatly. "The Director wants them brought to the hospital grounds. He wants them to watch."
