Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Down in the subterranean parking garage of St. Jude’s Hospital, the air was cold, damp, and smelled of wet concrete and exhaust fumes.
The garage had been completely cleared of civilian vehicles. The exits were blocked by heavy armored transport trucks.
At the center of the concrete room, kneeled two figures on the cold, wet pavement.
Silas Vance was weeping uncontrollably, his pristine Italian suit torn, his face smeared with sweat and dirt. Beside him, Odalys Crane sat trembling, her hands bound tightly behind her back with heavy tactical zip-ties. Her immaculate trench coat was ruined, her hair disheveled, her mask of cool corporate elegance completely shattered.
Surrounding them were twenty heavily armed tactical operators, standing like dark statues in the dim yellow light of the overhead fluorescent bulbs.
The heavy steel door leading to the elevator bank clicked open.
Footsteps echoed slow, deliberate, and heavy against the concrete.
Marcus Osei walked into the garage.
Silas looked up, his eyes bloodshot, his breath coming in ragged, pathetic hitches. "Marcus! Marcus, please! Look at me! I'm Silas! Your son-in-law!"
Marcus stopped ten feet away from them. He didn't speak immediately. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a small silver pocket watch—a simple, cheap watch Clara had bought him with her first paycheck from her high school summer job—and checked the time.
"It took me four hours to reach Chicago from Europe," Marcus said quietly. "Four hours of thinking about what you did to my daughter in that room."
"Marcus, it was a mistake!" Silas shrieked, crawling forward on his knees until a guard stepped forward and planted a heavy combat boot onto his chest, shoving him back to the ground. "Odalys went crazy! She acted without my permission! I love Clara! I love our baby!"
Marcus turned his gaze to Odalys.
Odalys looked up at him, her lips trembling, all her arrogance completely evaporated. "Who... who are you?" she whimpered. "You're just a mechanic..."
"I was a mechanic," Marcus corrected her softly, taking a slow step toward her. "Because my daughter wanted a normal life. She wanted to believe her father was just an ordinary man who worked hard with his hands. I built that lie for her. I lived that lie for her. And I would have stayed that mechanic for the rest of my life..."
Marcus leaned down, his dark eyes hovering inches from Odalys's pale face.
"...if you hadn't put your hands on my child."
Odalys broke, bursting into frantic, terrified tears. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'll sign whatever you want! I'll leave the country! I'll never come near Clara again! Please don't kill me!"
Marcus stood back up, looking down at them as if they were nothing more than insects beneath his boots.
"Kill you?" Marcus mused softly. "No. My daughter gave me explicit instructions. She wants you to live. She wants you to watch."
He turned to Commander Vane, who was standing beside him holding an electronic tablet.
"Report," Marcus ordered.
Vane stepped forward, reading in a sharp, mechanical tone. "As of three minutes ago, Vance Dynamics has officially declared bankruptcy following the total withdrawal of all institutional investors. The board of directors has unanimously voted to strip Silas Vance of his Chief Executive title. All personal assets, real estate, and private holdings registered to Silas Vance and Odalys Crane have been seized under federal asset forfeiture warrants."
Silas let out a hollow, strangled wail, burying his face in the cold concrete floor. "My company... my money..."
"Furthermore," Vane continued, "the Securities and Exchange Commission, along with the Department of Justice, have unsealed twenty-four indictments against Silas Vance and Odalys Crane for corporate fraud, money laundering through Kade Capital, and attempted extortion. Federal marshals are currently waiting outside the perimeter to take them into custody."
Marcus looked down at Silas. "You thought you were taking everything from her. But as of this moment, Clara owns ninety-eight percent of Vance Dynamics' intellectual property. Tomorrow, the company will be renamed Osei Technologies. My daughter will run it from her bedside."
"Marcus... please... leave me something..." Silas sobbed, his voice broken. "Don't ruin my life..."
"Ruin your life?" Marcus chuckled, a cold, terrifying sound that echoed through the vast concrete garage. "Silas, you are going to federal prison for the next thirty years. And while you are there, you will learn that every warden, every guard, and every inmate on the block answers to my payroll. You will be very, very well taken care of."
Silas’s sobbing stopped instantly. He stared at Marcus in total, paralyzing horror as the full extent of his nightmare finally hit him.
Marcus turned his back on them, walking slowly toward his waiting black SUV.
"Hand them to the federal marshals," Marcus commanded the guards without looking back. "Make sure they walk out the front doors where the press is waiting."
"Yes, Director."
Marcus opened the door of his SUV and stepped inside. The leather interior was warm, quiet, and isolated from the rain outside.
He sat down, pulled out his phone, and dialed a internal number.
"Clara?" Marcus’s voice shifted instantly, returning to the gentle, warm tone of a devoted father.
"Dad?" Clara’s raspy voice came through the speaker. "Is it done?"
"It’s done, my sweet girl," Marcus said, looking out the window as the tactical teams began dragging Silas and Odalys toward the police transport vans. "The trash has been cleared away. The company is yours. The money is yours. And you and my granddaughter are safe."
On the other end of the line, Clara let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief. "Where are you going now?"
"I'm coming back up to your room," Marcus smiled softly, watching the rain wash over the dark glass of the SUV. "I hear my granddaughter is getting ready to meet the world soon. And her grandfather needs to start building a crib."
Marcus hung up the phone. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the faded yellow MARCUS name patch he had worn for twenty years, and placed it neatly on his lap.
The world thought Marcus Osei was a feared shadow boss.

To the world, he was a monster.
But as he stepped out of the vehicle and walked back into the hospital to protect his daughter, he was simply a father who would tear the universe apart for his child.
