Chapter 2 - The Thaw of the Frozen King

The heavy, soundproofed mahogany double doors at the rear of the ballroom opened with a slow, mechanical precision that instantly altered the barometric pressure of the entire event.
A tall, broad-shouldered man in a flawlessly tailored, midnight-black tuxedo stepped through the threshold. The ambient chatter of the ballroom died instantly, the silence cascading across the crowd like a physical wave. It was Elian Vale. At thirty-six, he was the undisputed titan of American technology and sovereign infrastructure, a billionaire whose proprietary algorithms and satellite networks controlled half the communications data on the continent. The financial media called him The Frozen King—a man famous for his absolute lack of micro-expressions, his lethal corporate acquisitions, and a total, icy refusal to ever forgive a breach of contract or loyalty.
Elian did not look at the prominent politicians or the real estate moguls who instantly parted to clear his path. His gaze was fixed entirely on the center of the room.
His stride was long, deliberate, and unhurried, the leather of his custom Italian shoes clicking with a steady, rhythmic authority against the marble floor. When he reached the perimeter of the circle, his eyes dropped to the shivering, water-logged child standing in the puddle of gray fluid.
The Frozen King stopped dead in his tracks.
To the guests watching, it appeared as though a massive, invisible seismic shock had struck his core. The legendary, unreadable mask of his face fractured completely. His gray eyes dilated to the point of blackness, and his lower lip developed a visible, uncontrollable tremble. The ruthless billionaire who had dismantled three Fortune 500 companies without shifting his posture suddenly looked as though he had forgotten how to process oxygen.
Slowly, with an agonizing caution that seemed to tear at his joints, Elian Vale dropped to one knee directly into the pool of filthy, contaminated water that surrounded Ava’s feet. He did not care about the pristine fabric of his bespoke trousers or the social optics of his vulnerability.

His massive, scarred hands shook with a violent, terrifying intensity as he reached toward the child’s face, stopping just millimeters short of her skin, as if he were terrified that she was a hallucination that would dissolve into mist if touched. The ballroom became so hyper-silent that the distinct, rhythmic drip-drop of the water falling from Ava’s wet curls onto the stone echoed with the clarity of a ticking bomb.
For a long, agonizing moment, his vocal cords refused to function. His chest heaved in shallow, ragged gasps. The man who had never smiled, the man who had buried his emotions behind a billion-dollar wall of titanium and code, was weeping openly in front of his peers, the tears cutting bright, clean tracks through the dust on his face.
