Chapter 4 - The Lockdown

Elian Vale looked up, his gray eyes sweeping across the ballroom like a laser guidance system. The warmth that had flooded his face while looking at Ava evaporated, leaving behind a expression of such terrifying, quiet malice that several guests near the front row instinctively stepped backward, their hands rising in defensive postures.
His voice remained calm. Almost entirely devoid of inflection. A baseline frequency that indicated a total transition into operational hostility.
"Lock the doors."
The command was carried through the hidden earpieces of his personal tactical security detail stationed throughout the estate. Within three seconds, the heavy, reinforced mahogany double doors at every exit point of the grand ballroom slammed shut with a deep, pressurized thud that echoed through the structural beams of the building. The heavy steel electronic deadbolts engaged automatically, the sound of the motorized pins locking into place sounding like the firing sequence of a rifle.
A sudden, chaotic wave of panic rolled through the hundred wealthy guests. These were individuals who had spent their entire lives utilizing their capital to bypass boundaries, to exit uncomfortable situations, and to purchase immunity from consequence. To find themselves physically detained inside a room by a sovereign corporate power was a structural shock they were entirely unprepared to handle.
"Elian, please!" an older man—a prominent federal judge and a primary shareholder in Vale’s logistics division—stepped forward, his hands extended in a gesture of desperate diplomacy. "Let’s keep our heads clear here. This is an extraordinary emotional moment, a miracle, truly! But the guests... the women... this is a public charity event. Whatever domestic dispute has occurred here can be handled through the proper legal channels tomorrow morning. This is surely a massive misunderstanding."
Elian did not tilt his head toward the judge. He kept his arm pressed firmly against Ava’s back, feeling the small, rhythmic thud of her heart rate slowly stabilizing against his chest.
"No," Elian said quietly, his voice cutting through the judge’s explanation like an iron rod through glass. "There is no misunderstanding here, Julian."

He shifted his gaze slowly toward the pillar where Claudia Vance was attempting to slide toward the service elevator. "She is my daughter. She is Ava Vale. The sole heiress to the Vale global infrastructure network."
And in that precise chronological second, the horrifying, systemic truth of the situation crystallized within the minds of every person standing in that ballroom.
