Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Shadow

Three days later, in the high-security VIP room of a prestigious private banking institution in Zurich, Switzerland, Helen Vance sat across from a senior bank manager.
She was dressed impeccably in an expensive designer trench coat, dark sunglasses pushed up on her head, her posture dripping with arrogant composure. She felt victorious. She had successfully escaped Chicago, executed the handoff at O'Hare and Dallas, and erased her traces across international borders.
"Mrs. Vance," the bank manager said in smooth, accented English. "Before we can release the physical certificate bearer bonds and transfer the remaining balance of the late Julian Vance's foreign holdings, we require final verification of probate clearance."
Helen smiled dismissively, sliding a stack of fraudulent documents across the glass table. "As I told your legal department yesterday, my husband's estate has passed entirely to me as his sole surviving executor. The biological children were... unfortunately placed under state administrative care due to their abandonment by distant relatives following Julian's death."
"Is that so?" a cold, deep voice spoke from the doorway behind her.
Helen froze.
The heavy mahogany door opened, and Garrett Holloway walked into the private vault room, flanked by two plainclothes officers from the Swiss Federal Police and a senior investigator from Interpol.
Helen turned, her face turning pale. "Who are you? This is a private transaction! Guard, remove this man!"
Garrett walked calmly to the table, ignoring her outrage, and placed a thick leather binder in front of the Swiss bank manager.
"My name is Garrett Holloway," he said smoothly. "I am the legal temporary guardian of Maisie and Theo Vance—the living, rightful heirs to Julian Vance's estate."
Helen’s breath hitched. She looked at Garrett in shock, her eyes darting toward the Swiss police officers standing quietly by the door.
"You're lying!" Helen spat, her composure cracking into desperate venom. "Those children—"
"Those children were left at Gate 26 in Dallas Fort Worth Airport," Garrett interrupted, his tone chillingly precise. "You bought them tickets from O'Hare, deliberately separated them from their identity, abandoned them without food or protection, and boarded a flight to London expecting them to be lost forever."
"You have no proof!" Helen snarled, standing up so fast her chair scraped against the floor. "I left them with a nanny! If they vanished, it was negligence on the airport's part!"
Garrett retrieved an iPad from Dean, who had stepped into the doorway behind him, and tapped the screen. High-definition security footage from Dallas Fort Worth Airport played clearly on the display.
It showed Helen crouching down, whispering to Maisie and Theo, pointing toward the seating area, and then walking briskly toward the jet bridge alone without looking back even once.
"High-definition surveillance, boarding pass cross-referencing, and facial recognition technology are incredible tools, Mrs. Vance," Garrett said softly. "Interpol, the FBI, and the Swiss Federal Police have already issued warrants for felony child abandonment, grand larceny, and fraud."
The senior Swiss police officer stepped forward, pulling out a set of metal handcuffs. "Helen Vance, you are under arrest for international fraud and child endangerment. You will be held without bail pending extradition to the United States."

As the officers snapped the cuffs onto her wrists and led her screaming out of the bank vault, Garrett didn't feel a surge of triumph. He only felt an immense sense of relief.
The woman who had tried to erase two innocent lives was finally powerless.
