Chapter 5 - A Forever Home

Six months later.
The summer sun brightened the sprawling, lush green lawn of the Holloway estate. The air was warm and filled with the cheerful sound of laughter.
In the backyard, a newly constructed wooden playground stood beneath the shade of two large oak trees. Theo was swinging high into the air, clutching the chains with joy, while Maisie ran across the grass chasing a golden retriever puppy that Garrett had brought home the previous month.
Garrett sat on the shaded patio, watching them with a quiet warmth in his heart. Dean walked out from the main house carrying a tray with two glasses of iced tea and a set of finalized legal documents bearing official seals from the State of Texas.
"The final adoption decree arrived from the district court this morning," Dean said, placing the papers gently on the table before his longtime friend. "It’s official, Garrett. You are legally their father."
Garrett picked up the document, his thumb running over the stamped ink at the bottom of the page: Maisie Holloway and Theo Holloway.
He looked up toward the lawn. Over the past six months, the trauma that had haunted the twins' eyes had slowly faded away. Maisie no longer searched the faces of passing strangers in crowds. Theo no longer kept constant watch over his worn stuffed dog—though Barnaby still sat proudly on his bed every night.
They had learned what it felt like to be safe. They had learned what it meant to belong.
"Thank you, Dean," Garrett said quietly. "For everything."
"You did this, Garrett," Dean replied with a subtle, warm smile. "Most people would have walked past Gate 26 that afternoon. Thousands of people did."
"I was just looking for a quiet place to read my emails," Garrett murmured, a touch of dry humor softening his voice. "Turns out, I was just where I needed to be."
From the grass, Maisie spotted Garrett sitting on the patio. She waved her small hand wildly, her yellow cardigan tied casually around her waist.
"Daddy! Look how high Theo can swing!" she called out, her voice clear, vibrant, and entirely free of fear.

Garrett stood up from his chair, leaving the legal papers behind on the table, and walked out into the warm sunlight toward his children.
A single decision made by a stranger in a crowded terminal had changed their destiny forever—and in saving them, Garrett had finally found his true home.
