PART 2 The Secret The Camera Captured

The first thing I felt was pain.

Not the sharp kind from before.

A deeper pain.

A heavy, terrifying pain that seemed to spread through my entire body.

My eyes opened slowly.

White ceiling.

Bright lights.

The sound of machines.

For a moment, I didn’t remember where I was.

Then I felt my stomach.

And panic hit me.

“My babies.”

My voice was barely a whisper.

A nurse immediately turned.

“Mrs. Carter?”

She rushed toward me.

“You’re awake.”

I grabbed her hand.

“My babies…”

The nurse’s expression softened.

“They’re here.”

Those three words saved me.

“They’re alive?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“Both?”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

And finally allowed myself to breathe.

But relief lasted only seconds.

Because the memories came back.

Vanessa.

The punch.

The floor.

Carol’s voice.

“Make sure she doesn’t ruin everything.”

I opened my eyes again.

“Where is my husband?”

The nurse hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“Mrs. Carter…”

“Where is Daniel?”

She looked toward the door.

“He’s on his way.”

I stared.

“On his way?”

She nodded.

“He was contacted after the emergency alert.”

The alert.

Of course.

My security system.

The one thing they didn’t know about.

The one thing that might have saved me.

A doctor entered.

Dr. Miller.

He checked the monitors.

“Emily, you went into early labor.”

My heart tightened.

“How early?”

“Eight months.”

I nodded.

“Are they okay?”

He smiled slightly.

“They’re premature, but stable.”

I cried quietly.

“My babies…”

“You did everything right.”

I almost laughed.

Because I hadn’t done anything.

I had only survived.

Then the doctor’s expression changed.

“Emily.”

“Yes?”

“There’s something else.”

I looked at him.

“Your husband requested we preserve all evidence.”

My heart skipped.

“What evidence?”

He glanced at the door.

“The security footage.”

I froze.

“The camera worked?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

My eyes closed.

A small breath escaped me.

Good.

Because I knew what that meant.

They didn’t just hurt me.

They recorded themselves.

Hours later, Daniel arrived.

I knew before seeing him.

Because the hallway became quiet.

Then the door opened.

And there he was.

His face was pale.

His eyes red.

The man who had left me smiling and pregnant came back looking like he had aged ten years.

“Emily.”

His voice broke.

I stared at him.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he crossed the room.

Stopped beside my bed.

“I’m sorry.”

The words were not enough.

Not even close.

I looked away.

“Where were you?”

He lowered his head.

“Singapore.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Where were you when she attacked me?”

His eyes filled.

“I wasn’t here.”

Exactly.

He wasn’t.

Daniel reached for my hand.

I moved away.

Not because I hated him.

Because I was still trying to understand.

My husband’s family tried to kill our children.

And he wasn’t there.

“I should have known.”

His voice shook.

“My mother and Vanessa…”

He stopped.

“You knew they hated me.”

Silence.

That was enough.

He knew.

Maybe not the plan.

Maybe not the violence.

But he knew there was something wrong.

“I thought they would just argue.”

I stared at him.

“You thought?”

His face collapsed.

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

My voice was quiet.

“You were.”

A detective arrived before midnight.

Detective Lewis.

He placed a folder on the table.

“We reviewed the security footage.”

Daniel immediately looked up.

“What did you find?”

The detective looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter, the attack was recorded.”

I nodded.

“And?”

He opened the folder.

“The footage confirms Vanessa assaulted you.”

A pause.

“And confirms Carol was present.”

Daniel froze.

His own mother.

The woman who raised him.

The woman he trusted.

The woman who smiled at him.

She was standing there while his pregnant wife was dragged across the floor.

The detective continued.

“She entered the home after the attack began.”

My hands tightened.

“Did she call emergency services?”

The detective looked down.

“No.”

Silence.

My eyes filled.

Because that answer hurt.

Even though I already knew.

“She did nothing.”

The detective nodded.

“She discussed what to do next.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

“What did she say?”

The detective hesitated.

Then:

“She said the situation could still be controlled.”

Controlled.

That word again.

People who hurt others always needed control.

The detective played the audio.

Carol’s voice filled the room.

“Is she unconscious?”

Vanessa:

“Almost.”

Carol:

“The account?”

Vanessa:

“I couldn’t access it.”

A pause.

Then Carol sounded angry.

“Then make sure she cannot tell anyone.”

The room became silent.

Daniel looked destroyed.

I looked at the wall.

Because hearing it was different from knowing it.

This wasn’t a misunderstanding.

This wasn’t a family argument.

They planned everything.

The detective stopped the recording.

“There’s more.”

He placed another document down.

“The withdrawal form Vanessa brought was not only forged.”

I looked at him.

“What else?”

“She had assistance.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who?”

The detective looked at Daniel.

Then me.

“We traced the original template.”

A pause.

“It came from someone who had access to the family’s financial records.”

Daniel went still.

“No.”

The detective didn’t need to say the name.

Because we both knew.

Carol.

That night, while my twins slept in the NICU, I couldn’t sleep.

I watched their tiny bodies through the glass.

So small.

So fragile.

And I kept thinking:

They tried to take their future.

Before they even had one.

The door opened quietly.

Daniel entered.

He stood beside me.

“She should have loved you.”

I didn’t answer.

“My mother.”

A pause.

“I don’t understand how she became this person.”

I looked at him.

“Maybe she always was.”

He looked hurt.

But I didn’t apologize.

Because I was done protecting people who destroyed us.

The next morning, something unexpected happened.

A lawyer arrived.

Not Daniel’s lawyer.

Mine.

The one who helped create the children’s trust.

He placed a file on the table.

“Emily, there’s something you need to know.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He opened the file.

“Before the attack, the system detected multiple unauthorized attempts to access the account.”

My heart sank.

“How many?”

“Six.”

“From where?”

He looked serious.

“Carol’s home.”

The room went quiet.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“But that’s not the worst part.”

I stared.

“What is?”

He turned the page.

“There was another person accessing the records.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who?”

He looked at Daniel.

And answered:

“Your husband.”

I froze.

Daniel stepped back.

“No.”

But the lawyer had more.

“Daniel requested information about the trust two days before leaving for Singapore.”

I stared at my husband.

And for the first time since I woke up…

A terrifying thought entered my mind.

May you like

What if Vanessa and Carol weren’t the only ones hiding something?

What if the betrayal started much closer?
