PART 3 The Husband’s Hidden File

For a long time, I couldn’t speak.
The lawyer’s words kept repeating in my head.
Daniel accessed the trust records.
Two days before leaving.
Two days before Vanessa attacked me.
Two days before my children almost lost their future.
I looked at my husband.
The man who had held my hand through every ultrasound.
The man who cried when we heard two heartbeats for the first time.
The man who painted the nursery himself because he said our babies deserved a room made with love.
And suddenly…
I didn’t know who I was looking at.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Emily, listen to me.”
I didn’t move.
“Explain.”
His mouth opened.
Closed.
That silence hurt more than any excuse.
“Explain.”
My voice was stronger this time.
“Why did you access the account?”
He looked at the floor.
“I was checking something.”
“What?”
No answer.
I laughed softly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because I was exhausted.
“Everyone keeps telling me they were protecting me.”
I looked at him.
“Your mother.”
“Your sister.”
“Now you.”
My eyes burned.
“When does the truth start?”
The lawyer slowly closed the file.
“Emily, I think we should continue this when you’re ready.”
“No.”
I kept looking at Daniel.
“I want to know.”
Daniel looked broken.
“I didn’t know they would hurt you.”
That sentence.
That one sentence.
I heard it clearly.
Not:
“I didn’t know they planned it.”
Not:
“I didn’t know they wanted the money.”
He said:
“I didn’t know they would hurt you.”
Meaning he knew something.
My heart dropped.
“What did you know?”
Daniel sat down.
For the first time in our marriage, he looked afraid of me.
“I knew my mother was angry.”
“Why?”
“Because of the trust.”
I stared.
“She wanted control.”
He nodded.
“She believed the money should stay in the family.”
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“The money is for our children.”
“I know.”
“No.”
My voice cracked.
“You don’t understand.”
I pointed toward the NICU.
“Those babies almost died because people wanted money.”
His face fell.
“I know.”
He took a deep breath.
“Before Singapore, my mother came to me.”
I waited.
“She said you were changing.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“She said after becoming pregnant, you were becoming difficult.”
My hands tightened.
Of course.
That was always how people like Carol worked.
They didn’t attack directly.
They planted doubt.
“She said you were trying to separate me from my family.”
I stared.
“And did you believe her?”
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
A tear fell from his eye.
“I was confused.”
I shook my head.
“You were my husband.”
“I know.”
“You should have protected me.”
“I know.”
But knowing afterward was easy.
The hard part was choosing when it mattered.
The lawyer interrupted.
“Emily, there’s something else.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He hesitated.
“Daniel didn’t only access the trust.”
My stomach tightened.
“What else?”
“He changed the emergency contact settings.”
I looked at Daniel.
“Why?”
He looked away.
“I thought…”
“Stop saying that.”
My voice became cold.
“You thought.”
Silence.
“That’s the problem.”
The lawyer continued.
“The emergency system was originally designed so only Emily could approve financial activity.”
He looked at Daniel.
“But someone attempted to add another authorization.”
I felt sick.
“Who?”
He answered:
“Carol.”
My eyes narrowed.
“And Daniel approved the request.”
The room went silent.
I looked at my husband.
He looked like he wanted to disappear.
“Why?”
His voice was barely audible.
“My mother said it would make things easier.”
I stared at him.
“Easier for who?”
No answer.
Because the answer was obvious.
Not me.
Not our children.
That afternoon, I asked the detective to come back.
I wanted everything.
Every message.
Every call.
Every detail.
Detective Lewis arrived with a tablet.
“I found something interesting.”
He showed me a timeline.
“Vanessa didn’t randomly decide to come that day.”
I looked closer.
“She received a message.”
“From who?”
He zoomed in.
My blood turned cold.
Carol.
The message said:
Today. While Daniel is gone. She won’t be able to fight back.
I closed my eyes.
They planned around his absence.
They waited until I was alone.
Eight months pregnant.
No protection.
No help.
But the detective wasn’t finished.
“There’s another message.”
He opened it.
This one was from Daniel.
My breathing stopped.
Are you sure this is necessary?
I stared.
The date was the day before he left.
My hands shook.
“What does that mean?”
The detective looked at Daniel.
“That’s what we need to know.”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“I can explain.”
I turned toward him.
“Then explain.”
He swallowed.
“I thought they were just going to scare you.”
The room became silent.
A horrible realization filled the space.
He knew.
Not everything.
But enough.
Enough to stop it.
Enough to warn me.
Enough to protect us.
And he didn’t.
The next few days changed everything.
Vanessa was arrested.
The security footage was impossible to deny.
The audio.
The attack.
The conversation.
The plan.
She tried to claim it was an accident.
That she lost control.
Nobody believed her.
Because the recording proved otherwise.
She wasn’t shocked by what happened.
She was frustrated it didn’t work.
Carol’s arrest came next.
She sat in the interrogation room with the same calm expression she always had.
Like she was above everyone.
Like she was the victim.
Detective Lewis asked:
“Why did you do this?”
Carol smiled.
“I was protecting my family.”
The detective stared.
“By attacking a pregnant woman?”
“She was taking what belonged to us.”
The detective leaned forward.
“The children’s money?”
Carol’s expression hardened.
“It should have been controlled by Daniel.”
Not by me.
That was what she meant.
The truth finally appeared.
She never saw me as Daniel’s wife.
Only a temporary person holding something she wanted.
When Daniel finally spoke to the police, he gave them everything.
The messages.
The conversations.
The doubts he ignored.
The mistakes he made.
He didn’t ask for forgiveness.
Not from me.
Not from anyone.
Because he knew he didn’t deserve it.
A week later, my twins came home.
I held them both.
Two tiny lives.
Two miracles.
And I promised them something.
No one would ever decide their worth.
No one.
Not family.
Not society.
Not anyone.
But just when I thought everything was over…
The lawyer called.
His voice sounded worried.
“Emily, we found one more thing.”
I froze.
“What now?”
A pause.
Then:
“The money wasn’t the only reason they attacked you.”
My heart tightened.
“What do you mean?”
He lowered his voice.
“Your children’s trust contained something else.”
“What?”
“The original documents.”
I waited.
“Documents showing Daniel’s father left control of the company…”
A pause.
“Not to Daniel.”
My blood ran cold.
“Then who?”
The answer came quietly.
“To you.”
And suddenly…
I understood.
May you like
They didn’t just want the money.
They wanted me gone.
