Chapter 3 - The Hospital Confrontation

The VIP maternity floor of St. Jude’s Women’s Hospital was quiet, illuminated by soft overhead lights and decorated with floral arrangements.
Inside Room 402, Brooke Sterling sat up in her mechanized hospital bed, wearing a silk robe, sipping fresh organic juice while scrolling through a luxury real estate portal on her iPad. In the corner of the room, two acrylic bassinets held the sleeping twins, wrapped in pink and blue cashmere blankets.
Brooke was glowing. Everything had gone precisely according to her master plan.
For two years, she had played the long game. She had orchestrated Arthur’s financial reliance on her cousin's shell company, she had convinced him to siphon money from Clara’s firm, and she had expertly manipulated his deep-seated insecurity about leaving behind an heir. She knew that once the twins were born, Arthur would abandon Clara, secure his massive divorce settlement, and bring her into the inner circle of the ultra-wealthy Pendelton dynasty.
The heavy wooden door of the suite burst open, slamming violently against the wall.
Brooke gasped, dropping her iPad onto the blanket as Arthur stormed into the room.
He looked unhinged. His hair was disheveled, his suit jacket was gone, his tie hung loosely around his open collar, and his eyes were bloodshot and wild with an animalistic panic.
“Arthur!” Brooke exclaimed, setting her glass down. “Darling, what is wrong with you?! You almost woke the babies! Did your parents—"
Arthur flew across the room, slamming his hands down onto the tray table over her bed, leaning over her until his face was inches from hers.
“Who do they belong to, Brooke?!” Arthur roared, his voice cracking with terrifying rage.
Brooke recoiled, her eyes widening in genuine shock. “What... what are you talking about?! Arthur, you're scaring me!”
“WHO IS THE FATHER OF THESE CHILDREN?!” he screamed, his face turning dark purple as the veins along his neck bulged against his skin.
In the corner, both infants woke up simultaneously, letting out high-pitched, wailing cries.
“Arthur, stop it!” Brooke shrieked, trying to push his heavy frame away from her bed. “They are YOUR children! What is wrong with you?! Did Clara say something to you?! Is she trying to poison your mind?!”
Arthur reached into his pocket, pulled out the creased, rumpled sterility report, and slapped it down onto her lap over the white hospital blanket.
“I had a complete vasectomy when I was nineteen years old!” Arthur spat, tears of pure humiliation spilling down his face. “I am sterile, Brooke! I have been sterile my entire adult life! I couldn't produce a child if my life depended on it!”
Brooke looked down at the official military medical document resting on her lap.
For three terrifying seconds, the room was completely silent, save for the crying of the newborns. The color drained from Brooke’s face with horrifying speed, her polished, confident expression collapsing into a mask of pure, trapped panic.
She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out.
“You thought I was stupid,” Arthur whimpered, dropping his head as a sob escaped his throat. “You knew I wanted an heir more than anything... so you used me. You made me steal nearly a million dollars from my own wife’s company to pay for your life... for ANOTHER MAN’S CHILDREN?!”
Before Brooke could formulate a response, the heavy door of the VIP suite opened once more.
Two uniformed officers from the Richmond Police Department stepped into the room, accompanied by a woman in a sharp charcoal business suit holding a leather briefcase.
It was Eleanor Vance—my lead attorney.
“Brooke Sterling? Arthur Pendelton?” Eleanor asked calmly, pulling two formal blue folders from her briefcase.
Arthur turned around slowly, his eyes hollow. “What... what is this?”
“Mr. Pendelton,” Eleanor stated with crisp, lethal professionalism. “I am serving you with a formal arrest warrant for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and criminal fraud, issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia based on evidence provided by Vance Strategic Partners.”
Arthur blinked, looking at the uniformed officers stepping forward with handcuffs hanging from their utility belts. “No... wait... my wife... Clara wouldn't arrest me...”
“Clara is no longer your wife, Arthur,” Eleanor corrected smoothly. “The emergency dissolution judge signed the decree forty-five minutes ago, citing egregious fraud. Furthermore, Ms. Sterling...”
Eleanor turned her gaze toward Brooke, whose face was now as white as the hospital sheets.
“You are being named as a co-conspirator in the grand larceny indictment,” Eleanor continued. “A court order has been executed seizing your downtown penthouse, all bank accounts registered under Sovereign Media LLC, and the physical contents of this hospital suite, which were funded entirely using stolen corporate capital. You have four hours following your medical discharge to surrender your passport.”
“No!” Brooke screamed, throwing the blankets off her legs and swinging her feet to the floor. “You can't do this! I just gave birth! These are innocent children!”
May you like
“Innocent children,” Eleanor agreed softly, looking over at the crying twins in their bassinets. “Whose biological father, Mr. Marcus Kane—your cousin's business partner—was arrested three hours ago at Richmond International Airport trying to board a flight to Grand Cayman with eighty thousand dollars of stolen firm cash.”
Arthur let out a guttural, pathetic groan, dropping to his knees on the cold hospital floor as the handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. He looked up at Brooke with a look of terrifying, absolute betrayal, realizing that every single choice he had made, every lie he had told, and every bridge he had burned had led him directly into a trap constructed by his own greed.
