Chapter 5 - The Master of Her Estate

Six months later.
The summer afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow across the rolling green lawns of my estate in Charlottesville. The garden was alive with the vibrant colors of blooming white hydrangeas and dark red roses, swaying gently in the warm Virginia breeze.
I stood on the back veranda, wearing a simple, breathtaking navy linen dress, holding a glass of chilled white wine.
Beside me stood Victoria Pendelton.
Over the last six months, Victoria and I had built a quiet, deeply respectful bond. She had officially severed all ties with her son, refusing to pay his legal fees or visit him at the state correctional facility where Arthur was currently serving a four-year sentence for grand larceny and corporate fraud.
“You’ve transformed this place, Clara,” Victoria said softly, her eyes sweeping over the renovated gardens and the bright, open glass additions to the house. “It feels alive now. It feels like a home.”
“It is a home,” I smiled, taking a sip of wine. “Because only people who respect it are allowed through the gates.”
Down the lawn, near the newly built garden pavilion, Sarah and three of my senior project directors from Vance Strategic Partners were setting up a buffet table for our firm's annual summer celebration. My company had expanded double in size over the last two quarters, securing major international consulting contracts and establishing a million-dollar charitable foundation dedicated to supporting female entrepreneurs recovering from financial abuse.
My phone chimed softly on the teak table beside my lounger.
I picked it up and opened a notification from Eleanor Vance.
Final update regarding Brooke Sterling: Eleanor wrote. Plea deal finalized today. Six years in state custody without parole eligibility for three years. Marcus Kane received five years federal. The twins have been officially adopted by Marcus’s sister in Maryland, fully supported by an anonymous trust fund you established.
I set the phone back down on the table, looking out at the bright, clear blue sky above the Virginia hills.
Brooke and Arthur had built their entire world on a foundation of deception, arrogance, and cruelty. They had believed that by stealing my money and attacking my dignity, they could construct a grand future at my expense. But in the end, their own lies had consumed them, stripping them of their freedom, their reputations, and their pride.

I walked down the stone steps of the veranda, joining my team on the sunny lawn, hearing the sound of laughter and warm conversation filling the air.
I was no longer the quiet, cautious woman standing behind a man’s hollow success. I was the architect of my own destiny, the owner of my home, and for the first time in my life, I was completely, beautifully free.
