PART 1 — THE WEDDING THAT BECAME A ROYAL EXECUTION

The cathedral bells rang across Boston just as the massive oak doors began to open.

Three hundred guests rose to their feet.

Nathaniel Brooks stood proudly at the altar in a custom Italian tuxedo worth more than most people earned in a month.

Beside him sat his mother, Margaret Brooks.

Behind her lounged Vivien Carmichael, dressed in a glittering white gown that looked suspiciously bridal.

Neither woman bothered hiding her smiles.

They believed they had already won.

After all, Isabella Montgomery was nothing more than a poor accounting student.

A nobody.

A placeholder bride.

A temporary obstacle.

The organ music began.

The doors opened.

And every smile in the cathedral vanished.

Because Isabella wasn't wearing the hideous yellow wedding dress they had forced upon her.

She entered wearing a breathtaking royal gown woven with silver embroidery and diamonds that shimmered beneath the cathedral lights.

Gasps echoed through the crowd.

Nathaniel blinked.

Margaret stood halfway from her seat.

Vivien's face twisted.

"What is she wearing?" she hissed.

Then something even stranger happened.

Twenty men and women in black ceremonial military uniforms entered behind Isabella.

Royal guards.

Every guest turned.

Whispers spread through the cathedral.

"Royal guards?"

"Who are these people?"

"What is happening?"

Nathaniel laughed nervously.

"Isabella, enough with the theatrics."

She kept walking.

Calm.

Silent.

Terrifying.

When she finally reached the altar, she looked directly into his eyes.

Then she smiled.

"Good morning, Nathaniel."

The smile made his stomach tighten.

Because it was the first time he had ever seen her look powerful.

And for the first time since meeting her...

He was afraid.
