Chapter 3 - Behind Closed Doors

I walked over to my mother and gently offered her my arm. She hesitated for a long second, her eyes darting between Chloe and me, before she reached out and rested her trembling, feather-light hand on my forearm. As we walked slowly down the hallway toward the ground-floor master suite, I could feel the tension radiating off her small body. She moved like a prisoner navigating a minefield, stepping cautiously, her head bowed.

We entered her bedroom, and I closed the door behind us. The room was cold, dark, and devoid of the personal touches that used to define my mother’s sanctuary. Her beautiful antique dresser was bare; the framed family photographs that once lined the walls had been removed, leaving dusty rectangular outlines on the wallpaper. The large bay window was covered by thick, light-blocking drapes that were nailed directly into the wooden frame, preventing them from being drawn back.

"Mom," I said gently, switching on the bedside lamp. "Let's get you cleaned up and comfortable. Why don't we take off this heavy coat so you can relax?"

The moment my fingers reached toward the top button of her coat, my mother reacted with a wave of absolute, unadulterated terror. She shrank back, pressing her body against the bedpost, her arms crossing tightly over her chest to protect the garment.

"No! Please... don't take off my coat!" she pleaded, her voice trembling violently, rising to a pathetic, terrified whimpering. "Please, Elena... leave it on! I'm cold... I'm so cold!"

"Mom, it's warm in here," I said softly, my heart breaking as I saw the sheer horror in her eyes. "You don't need a winter coat to sleep."

"No, no, no!" she panicked, her hands shaking so violently that she knocked over a small glass of water sitting on the nightstand. The glass shattered on the hardwood floor, sending shards of glass and water splashing across the rug.

From the hallway outside, heavy, hurried footsteps immediately approached the door.

"Is everything alright in there?" Julian’s voice boomed through the wooden door, followed by a sharp, authoritative knock.

Mom froze, her breath catching in her throat, her eyes widening in absolute horror at the sound of her son's voice. She looked at the door, then back at me, her entire body shaking like a leaf in a storm.

"Everything is fine!" I called back instantly, keeping my voice smooth, cheerful, and entirely relaxed. "Mom just accidentally bumped a water glass off the table. I'm cleaning it up now. We don't need any help!"

There was a long, excruciating pause on the other side of the door. I could hear low whispering between Julian and Chloe.

"Make sure she takes her pills, Elena," Chloe’s voice called out sternly. "She needs them to sleep."

"I will!" I responded.

I waited until the sound of their footsteps retreated down the hallway before turning back to my mother. I reached into my pocket, pulled out a small cloth napkin I had grabbed from the kitchen, and carefully picked up the larger pieces of broken glass, setting them safely aside.

Then, I walked over to the bedroom door, slid the brass deadbolt into place, and locked it securely. I walked into the adjoining master bathroom, turned on the hot water tap in the shower, and let it run, allowing the sound of cascading water to fill the room and mask our conversation.

I returned to my mother’s side, kneeling in front of her so that our eyes were at the exact same level. I took her freezing, trembling hands in mine and looked deep into her tear-filled eyes.

"Mom," I said, my voice dropping to a low, intense whisper that carried the absolute weight of my professional authority and maternal love. "Look at me. Look at Elena. I am here now. I am not going to leave you, and I am not going to let anyone hurt you. But you need to let me see. You need to tell me what is happening in this house."

Tears trickled down her hollow, wrinkled cheeks, dropping onto the dark fabric of her coat. "They... they'll be angry, Elena," she sobbed softly, her voice barely audible over the sound of the running shower. "If they know I told you, they'll lock me away. Chloe said... she said they would put me in a state asylum where nobody would ever come see me."

"Nobody is putting you anywhere, Mom," I promised, my voice hard as steel. "I am an attorney for the State. I have the power to stop them. But I need to see what's under the coat."

Slowly, agonizingly, my mother lowered her hands. Her chin trembled as she nodded, consenting to the unmasking of her nightmare.

I reached up with steady hands and began to unbutton the thick winter coat, one button at a time. I parted the heavy fabric and slipped it carefully off her fragile, narrow shoulders, letting it fall away.

The moment the coat slid off, my world stopped.

Underneath the heavy coat, Mom was wearing a thin, sleeveless nightshirt. Her fragile, pale skin was covered in a horrifying tapestry of violence. Dark, purplish-black bruises mottled her ribs, her collarbones, and her upper arms. Massive yellowish-green contusions spanned across her frail torso, evidence of older injuries that were slowly healing beneath the fresh, dark blood blisters.

Most horrifying of all were her wrists. Circumferential, deep red rope marks and severe ligature abrasions encircled both of her thin wrists, cutting deep into the skin, raw and inflamed.

I stared at her body, my mind momentarily blanking as a wave of cold, agonizing shock washed through me. The sheer scale of the brutality inflicted upon this seventy-eighth-year-old woman—my mother—was beyond comprehension.

My breath hitched, and I felt a tear slip down my face, but I instantly forced my emotions down into a dark, locked vault inside my mind. Panic and rage were useless. Right now, my mother needed a prosecutor, an investigator, and a protector.

"Who did this to you, Mom?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm, dead, and focused.

Mom looked down at her wrists, a fresh torrent of tears falling from her eyes.

"Julian..." she whispered, her voice choking on her own son's name. "Julian ties me to the bedposts with nylon rope whenever I ask about my bank accounts... or when I ask to call you. He leaves me tied there in the dark for hours..."

"And Chloe?" I asked, my hands gripping her arms gently, avoiding the bruised tissue.

"Chloe hurts me when I refuse to sign the legal papers," Mom sobbed, pulling her knees up to her chest. "She pinches my ribs, squeezes my arms, and slaps me across the chest where the marks won't show... She tells me nobody will ever believe an old, crazy woman over her devoted son. She took my phone, Elena. Julian smashed it with a hammer in front of me when I tried to dial your number last month."

She looked up at me, her eyes filled with an unimaginable, desperate agony. "They sold my lake cabin, Elena. They transferred all my savings into their private account. They told me I had nothing left, and that if I didn't cooperate, they would stop feeding me..."

Every single piece of the puzzle clicked into place with horrifying clarity. The isolation, the blacked-out windows, the heavy coat, the fake dementia diagnosis by a compliant family doctor, the coerced legal documents—it was a systematic, calculated, and brutal scheme of elder abuse, torture, and grand larceny. And it was being perpetrated by my own brother.
