Chapter 8 - The Medical Unraveling

The master bedroom door opened slowly, and my mother stepped out, wrapped in a warm, plush wool blanket provided by the paramedics. She looked tiny and fragile standing beside the tall female detective, but for the first time in months, the suffocating cloud of terror that had enveloped her face was gone.
"Elena?" she called out softly, searching the dim hallway.
I hurried down the corridor and wrapped my arms around her, pulling her close. She buried her face in my shoulder, weeping softly, her body trembling with a mixture of exhaustion and profound relief.
"They're gone, Mom," I whispered, holding her tight. "They're gone. They are in police custody. They will never come back here."
A senior paramedic stepped up beside us, holding a medical clipboard. "Ms. Vance, we need to take your mother to Oakridge Memorial Hospital right away. She needs a comprehensive medical evaluation, full body X-rays to check for hairline fractures, blood panels to screen for unauthorized sedatives, and proper treatment for those severe wrist lacerations."
"I'm coming with you," I said immediately.
"I'll have an escort unit lead the ambulance," Marcus Sterling said, joining us in the hallway. "My team will secure the house as a crime scene, Elena. We're going to search every inch of this place—Julian's computer, financial files, safe deposit boxes, everything. We'll have a complete forensic audit of every penny stolen from your mother within forty-eight hours."
"Thank you, Marcus," I said, shaking his hand firmly. "Make sure you secure the garage. Mom mentioned Julian destroyed her old phone in there. If we can find the smashed device, it establishes intent to isolate the victim."
"On it," Marcus promised.
Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in the back of the ambulance, holding my mother's hand as the vehicle sped toward the hospital. The steady beep of the heart monitor filled the interior. Mom lay on the gurney, staring up at the ceiling, her hand gripping mine with surprising strength.
"Elena," she murmured, her voice weak. "What will happen to the house? What will happen to everything?"
"Don't worry about any of that, Mom," I said gently, pressing her hand to my cheek. "Everything is being handled. I've taken full legal guardianship. I'm taking a leave of absence from my job in the city. I'm staying right here with you."
When we arrived at Oakridge Memorial Hospital, the emergency department was already briefed and waiting. Dr. Sarah Lin, a renowned specialist in geriatric medicine, took charge of Mom's care. I watched from the observation room as Dr. Lin and her team performed a thorough physical examination, systematically documenting every single injury for the official medical-legal record.
An hour later, Dr. Lin stepped out into the hallway to speak with me. Her face was grim, her eyes burning with professional outrage.
"Ms. Vance," Dr. Lin said, holding a stack of medical scans and lab reports. "I've reviewed the preliminary results. What happened to your mother is pure criminal barbarity."
"What did the scans show, Doctor?" I asked, my voice tightening.
"She has two healing hairline fractures on her lower left ribs—injuries consistent with heavy, direct blunt force trauma sustained approximately three weeks ago," Dr. Lin revealed, pointing to an X-ray scan. "Her wrist lacerations are infected, suggesting she was bound for extended periods without basic hygiene or medical care. But the most alarming finding is her toxicology report."
I leaned in closer. "What was in her system?"
"Extremely high levels of Haloperidol—a potent, heavy-duty antipsychotic medication—combined with massive doses of liquid Diazepam," Dr. Lin said angrily. "These drugs were being administered in dosages high enough to induce severe lethargy, extreme mental confusion, memory loss, and physical paralysis. They were intentionally chemically sedating her to simulate advanced dementia!"
A cold, lethal fury settled into my chest. Julian and Chloe hadn't just beaten and robbed my mother; they had deliberately poisoned her mind with heavy psychotropic drugs to create a artificial medical justification for their Power of Attorney.
"Can you testify to these findings in court, Dr. Lin?" I asked, my voice sharp as a razor.
"I will personally stand on the witness stand and present these medical findings to any jury in the land," Dr. Lin declared firmly. "This wasn't medical care, Ms. Vance. This was chemical warfare against a defenseless elderly woman."
"Thank you, Doctor," I said. "Please keep her under twenty-four-hour police guard in this room. Nobody gets near her without my explicit written permission."
I stepped away from the nursing station, pulled out my phone, and called Marcus Sterling immediately.
"Marcus," I said, my voice vibrating with dark intensity. "Add attempted murder by toxic overdose and chemical torture to the indictment. Dr. Lin just pulled heavy antipsychotics and massive doses of sedatives out of Mom's blood panels."
"Good Lord," Marcus breathed over the line. "I just got word from the team at Dr. Vance's office. They found a secret ledger in his desk. Julian was paying Dr. Vance five thousand dollars a month in cash under the table to write illegal prescriptions for Haloperidol and sign false dementia competency reports!"

"Issue an arrest warrant for Dr. Vance immediately," I ordered cold-bloodedly. "Charge him as a co-conspirator in a criminal syndicate. I want his medical license revoked before lunch, and I want him sitting in a jail cell right next to Julian."
"Consider it done, Elena," Marcus said. "We're building an iron coffin for these people. They are never coming out."
