Chapter 7 - The Arrest

The front door exploded inward with a deafening crash as a heavy battering ram splintered the solid oak frame.
"POLICE! STATE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT! SEARCH WARRANT! DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!"
A squad of fully armed tactical officers burst into the foyer, their assault rifles drawn, weapon-mounted flashlights cutting through the dim house in sharp, blinding beams of white light. Behind them stepped District Attorney Marcus Sterling, wearing a dark overcoat, accompanied by two senior homicide and elder abuse detectives.
"GET ON THE GROUND! DO IT NOW!" an officer roared, pointing his rifle directly at Julian.
Julian instantly released my lapels and threw his hands into the air, trembling violently. "Wait! Please! There's been a mistake! I'm her son! I live here!"
"KNEEL DOWN! HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK!"
Two tactical officers closed the distance in a fraction of a second. One officer grabbed Julian's arm, executed a swift arm-bar sweep, and forced him face-down onto the hard floor. Julian's cheek slammed against the hardwood, letting out a sharp cry of pain as the officer pinned his neck with a heavy boot and yanked his wrists behind his back.
CLICK-CLACK.
The heavy steel handcuffs locked around Julian's wrists with a definitive, brutal metallic snap.
"Chloe Vance!" another officer barked, turning toward Chloe, who was hyperventilating against the sofa, screaming hysterically. "Put your hands on top of your head! Turn around!"
"Don't touch me! You have no right!" Chloe shrieked, flailing her arms wildly. "My brother is an attorney! I'll sue every single one of you! Elena, tell them to stop! Tell them!"
An officer grabbed Chloe's wrists, spun her around, and forced her hands behind her back, snapping a second pair of handcuffs into place. She dissolved into loud, ugly sobbing, her manicured nails digging into her palms as she was hauled to her feet.
Marcus Sterling stepped over the splintered remnants of the front door, walking calmly into the center of the living room. He glanced at Julian groveling on the floor, then looked at me.
"Elena," Marcus said, stepping forward and placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine, Marcus," I said, my voice steady, though my adrenaline was pounding through my veins. "The victim is secured in the master bedroom at the end of the hall. The door is locked from the inside. I need a female officer and a paramedic team to go down there gently. She is terrified."
"I'll handle it personally," Marcus said, nodding to a female detective and two uniformed paramedics waiting at the entrance. "Lead the way."
As the paramedics and detective headed down the hallway, Marcus turned his attention back to Julian, who was being hauled up onto his knees by the tactical team. Julian's hair was disheveled, his face red and swollen, tears mixing with the sweat on his cheeks.
"Julian Vance," Marcus declared, reaching into his suit pocket and pulling out a folded document. "I am District Attorney Marcus Sterling. I am serving you with an emergency ex-parte protective order signed by Superior Court Judge Samuel Thorne, revoking any and all Power of Attorney, guardianship, or legal authority you claim over Eleanor Vance. Effective immediately, full emergency guardianship has been transferred to Assistant Attorney General Elena Vance."
"She manipulated you!" Julian screamed, spittle flying from his lips as he glared at Marcus. "She's trying to steal my mother's estate! Mom has severe dementia! Ask her doctor! Ask Dr. Arthur Vance!"
"Oh, we will ask Dr. Vance," Marcus replied with a cold, terrifying smile. "In fact, another team of state investigators is serving a search warrant at Dr. Vance's medical office right now. We're seizing his medical records, financial logs, and prescription registries. If he signed off on a fake dementia diagnosis to facilitate elder abuse and fraud, he'll be sharing a prison block with you by sunrise."
Julian's eyes widened in absolute, catastrophic horror. His last legal defense, the corrupt doctor who had provided cover for their crimes, was being dismantled simultaneously.
"You are also under arrest for Felony Aggravated Elder Abuse, Torture, Unlawful Imprisonment, Grand Larceny, and Extortion," Marcus continued, reading from the warrant. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."
"Elena! Please!" Julian sobbed, turning his desperate, tear-filled face toward me as the officers began dragging him toward the front door. "I'm your brother! We grew up in this house! You can't let them take me to jail! Please, talk to them!"
I stood near the fireplace, watching my brother being dragged away. I looked into his eyes, seeing for the first time the pathetic, hollow coward that hid behind his arrogant facade.
"You should have remembered that we grew up in this house, Julian," I said, my voice cold as ice. "Because in this house, Dad taught us to protect our mother. You chose to destroy her. Now, you pay the price."
"You bitch!" Chloe screamed as she was escorted past me, her hair hanging in her face, mascara running down her cheeks in black streaks. "You ruined everything! You ruined our lives!"
"You ruined your own lives the moment you put ropes around a seventy-eighth-year-old woman's wrists," I shot back, my voice echoing through the hallway. "Enjoy state prison, Chloe."

I watched as the officers loaded Julian and Chloe into the back of two separate police cruisers. The heavy doors slammed shut, and the flashing red and blue lights illuminated their terrified faces behind the reinforced glass before the cruisers pulled away into the dark night, sirens echoing into the distance.
I took a deep, heavy breath, feeling the crushing weight of the last three hours settle into my bones. The immediate threat was gone. The monsters had been removed from the house. But the battle was far from over. Now, the real work of healing—and legal prosecution—began.
