Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Thread

That evening, the Lake Forest mansion was quiet, wrapped in the serene, comforting darkness of the autumn night.

In the second-floor bedroom, Lily lay tucked beneath her thick down duvet, her thumb resting peacefully against her silver locket. Resting beside her pillow was the cream-colored teddy bear, its repaired ear hidden neatly against the velvet blanket.

Adrian sat on the edge of her bed, softly reading the final pages of a storybook.

"...and so, the king put down his sword, locked the gates of the dark castle, and lived in peace with his daughter forever and ever," Adrian finished, closing the leather-bound book with a soft sigh.

He looked down at Lily. Her eyes were heavy, her breathing slow and rhythmic as she drifted toward sleep.

"Daddy?" she murmured, her voice barely a whisper.

"Yes, my darling?"

"Is Mommy watching us right now?"

Adrian smiled softly, leaning down to press a gentle kiss onto her forehead.

"Every single second, Lily," he whispered. "She’s right here, in every room of this house, in every flower in the garden, and inside your heart."

"Goodnight, Daddy," she murmured, closing her eyes completely.

"Goodnight, my princess."

Adrian stood up, stepping quietly across the hardwood floor, leaving the bedroom door slightly ajar so a warm ribbon of light from the hallway illuminated the room.

He walked down the long, carpeted corridor, stopping at the high arched window at the end of the hall that overlooked the vast, quiet estate.

Outside, the moon hung high and bright in the clear night sky, illuminating the rolling hills, the quiet oak trees, and the open gates at the edge of the property.

There were no guards waiting in the shadows. There were no encrypted radios crackling with news of violence. There were no secret ledgers hidden behind mirrors.

There was only the quiet, beautiful peace of a family that had walked through the valley of shadow and emerged whole on the other side.

Adrian reached down, touching the small, stitched seam on his coat where he kept Claire’s letter.

He smiled—a real, true, unbroken smile—and walked down the grand stairs into the warmth of his home.
