Chapter 4 - The Siege of Lake Forest

The heavy double-pane glass windows of the grand salon shattered in a blinding cascade of crystal as automatic gunfire erupted across the front lawn.

"Get down!" Adrian shouted, shoving Rachel and Emma behind the solid oak framing of the grand staircase just as a hail of high-caliber bullets tore through the plaster walls above them.

The mansion, once a quiet sanctuary of wealth and art, instantly transformed into a war zone.

Outside, engine roars and the harsh crunch of tires over gravel signaled the arrival of the Moretti strike team. Leo Moretti, the ruthless boss of the rival Chicago crime syndicate, had realized that with Vanessa exposed, his window to eliminate Adrian Vale and claim the city’s smuggling routes was closing by the minute.

"Marcus!" Adrian roared over the thunderous echo of gunfire, unholstering a sleek, custom black pistol from beneath his jacket. "Secure Lily! Take her to the panic room beneath the wine cellar!"

"I've got two men on her already, Boss!" Marcus yelled back, firing three precise shots out the narrow arched window, dropping an attacker on the front terrace. "Options are limited! They cut the main power grid—the electronic locks on the south wing are useless!"

Rachel was huddled on the floor, covering Emma’s body with her own, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She was a simple woman who had taken this housekeeping job to pay for her daughter’s preschool, never imagining she would be caught in a bloody mob war.

"Mr. Vale!" Rachel screamed, dust and plaster raining down on her hair. "What about my daughter?!"

Adrian glanced down at her. Amidst the chaos, the smoke, and the deafening noise of automatic weapons, his face remained terrifyingly calm.

He reached down, grabbing Rachel by the shoulder, hauling her up into a low crouch.

"Listen to me," Adrian commanded, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "The panic room is reinforced with four inches of ballistic steel. It has its own air filtration and independent communications. You and Emma go with Marcus now."

"What about you?" Rachel asked, her voice cracking.

"I am going to finish what my wife started eleven months ago," Adrian replied coldly.

He turned to Marcus. "Take them down. Lock the door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me."

"Adrian, you can't fight fifteen armed men by yourself!" Marcus barked.

"I'm not by myself," Adrian said, pulling a heavy tactical radio from his belt. He pressed the side button. "Team Alpha, Team Bravo. The secondary protocol is active. Clean the lawn."

Suddenly, from the dark tree lines surrounding the estate, bright tactical spotlights flared to life, blinding the incoming Moretti shooters. The deafening sound of heavy engine roars echoed from the hidden underground garages as Adrian’s primary security forces—men trained in military tactics—erupted onto the grounds to flank the intruders.

Adrian didn't wait to watch the outcome on the lawn. He grabbed his weapon, racked the slide with a crisp clack, and headed toward the east wing basement.

It was time to talk to Vanessa Hale one last time before he visited the bank.

Down in the concrete cellar beneath the east wing, the sound of the gunfire above was muffled, sounding like distant thunder.

Vanessa sat tied to a heavy wooden chair beneath a single swinging light bulb. When the heavy steel door creaked open, she flinched, looking up with wild, terrified eyes.

Adrian stepped into the room. He didn't look angry. He looked like an executioner who had already read the verdict.

He walked over to a small metal table, setting the black flash drive and the brass bank key down where the single light bulb illuminated them.

Vanessa’s breath hitched. Her eyes darted to the flash drive, and the last remnant of her arrogant defiance crumbled into dust.

"You found it," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

"My wife was smarter than you, Vanessa," Adrian said, resting his hands on the back of a chair opposite her. "She knew you were feeding information to Leo Moretti. She knew you were setting up the hit on her car."

"It wasn't supposed to be a hit!" Vanessa screamed, tears streaming down her face, smearing her makeup into black tracks. "I just wanted her gone! I told Leo to scare her! I told him to force her out of Chicago so you would turn to me! I didn't know he was going to cut her brake lines!"

"You gave him the route," Adrian said softly. "You gave him her schedule. You let my daughter's mother die on a dark road in the rain."

"Adrian, please!" she begged, thrashing against her ropes. "I loved you! I loved Lily! I did everything for this family!"

"You didn't do it for this family," Adrian said, picking up the flash drive. "You did it for yourself."

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small encrypted satellite phone. He dialed a ten-digit number and placed it on speaker mode.

The phone rang twice before a deep, gravelly voice answered.

"Vale," the voice said. It was Federal Prosecutor Raymond Vance, the head of the Organized Crime Task Force in Illinois.

"Vance," Adrian said flatly. "I have the complete digital ledger of the Moretti family's international laundering network, along with the physical evidence connecting Leo Moretti and Vanessa Hale to the murder of my wife."

On the other end of the line, the prosecutor went dead silent for three long seconds.

"Where did you get this?" Vance demanded.

"My wife gave it to me," Adrian replied. "I am sending you the location of Leo Moretti’s primary command center right now. If your men aren't there in twenty minutes, my men will be."

"Don't do it, Adrian," Vance warned. "Give us the evidence. Let the law take care of them."

"The law has twenty minutes, Raymond," Adrian said, hanging up the phone.

He looked down at Vanessa, whose face was completely devoid of color.

"The federal marshals will be here in ten minutes to collect you," Adrian said, turning toward the door. "You will spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary thinking about the child you tried to rob of a mother."

"Adrian! Don't leave me here! Adrian!" she shrieked as the heavy steel door slammed shut, locking her in the dark.
