Chapter 9 - The Memorial

Later that afternoon, as the golden hour sun began to dip toward the horizon, casting long, peaceful shadows across the estate, Adrian took Lily by the hand.

They walked along a narrow, winding stone path that led away from the main mansion, deep into a secluded grove of ancient oak trees near the edge of the property.

In the center of the grove sat a quiet, beautiful memorial garden.

A marble bench overlooked a tranquil lily pond, and beside it stood a pristine white granite monument surrounded by blooming white roses.

Engraved on the stone were the words:

CLAIRE VALE Loving Wife, Devoted Mother, Guiding Light. "Love is stronger than the dark."

Lily walked up to the monument, setting down a small bouquet of white roses she had picked from the garden herself. She pressed her thumb against the heart-shaped silver locket hanging around her neck.

"Hi, Mommy," Lily whispered into the soft evening breeze. "Teddy is doing fine. Daddy repaired his ear. And we opened the foundation today, just like you wanted."

Adrian stood behind his daughter, placing his broad hands gently on her shoulders.

He looked up at the quiet canopy of oak leaves rustling in the autumn wind. For eleven months, he had felt an unbearable, suffocating weight whenever he thought of his wife—a crushing guilt that he hadn't protected her, that he hadn't answered her final call.

Now, standing in the quiet garden surrounded by the peace she had fought so hard to secure for them, he felt only a profound, overwhelming gratitude.

Claire hadn't just saved her daughter. She had saved him. She had pulled him out of a world of blood and violence, forcing him to choose the light.

"Thank you, my love," Adrian whispered into the wind.

A gentle breeze rustled through the oak trees, sending a shower of golden leaves dancing through the air around them, settling softly upon the white roses.
